I watched Dear Child (Netflix 2023) a German psychological mystery crime drama Mini Series with intriguing characters, a confounding puzzle and fragmented perspectives. Based on Romy Hausman’s international best-selling novel of the same name, Dear Child (or "Liebes Kind" in its original German) explores the connection between the pair's harrowing escape from captivity and a 13-year-old missing persons case.

Lena lives in complete isolation together with the two children Hannah and Jonathan in a highly secured home. They eat their meals, go to the toilet and to bed at precisely prescribed times. As soon as he enters the room, they line up to show their hands. They obey to everything he says. Until the young woman manages to escape. After a near fatal car accident, she is hospitalized, accompanied by Hannah. But the true extent of this nightmare is revealed with the arrival of Lena's parents at the hospital the same night. They have been desperately searching for their missing daughter for almost 13 years. But, there is a shocking twist.

The series is in German with English subtitles. I was skeptical but after the first episode I was hooked, though afterward it could of been another 1-2 episodes as the ending felt rushed. Some reviewers say it closely follows the novel.

"I found the motif of the inner and outer prison particularly interesting: Even if you manage to escape, you take your inner prison with you," he told Netflix. "You have to free yourself from it."

TIME magazine

Insane new article in the NYT about combat-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among Marines which resulted in symptoms closely mirroring Havana Syndrome. They suffered the TBIs in roughly the same period Havana Syndrome first emerged (2016-2017).



What I find odd are the similar descriptions:

The CIA last year or year before officially changed "Havana Syndrome" to "Anomalous health incidents" (AHI), formerly known as Unconventionally acquired brain injuries, UBIs. I wouldn't doubt if Elon's Neuro chip R&D is coupled directly to the Warfighter Brain Health Initiative, which got kicked off (funded) through Obama's Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative in early 2016.




Also, common sense should tell you that operating around explosions regularly will add up to TBI given enough time is the least surprising to me. Any other explanation would seem irrelevant. It used to be called shell-shocked, but over the years the health minded psychoanalysts had to conjure a new spell to add to the DSM-5 handbook, fit the times and of course $$$ to fund new therapy, new drugs.

My point is that "Havana Syndrome" emerged at the same time, possibly as a distraction from medical testing these Marines were undergoing at the same time. Very similar to drug trials on active duty & vets coupled with when certain experimental drugs go horribly wrong. Then out comes a cover story narrative.

Any time there is some weird illness and military/gov intersecting, its usually because of said military/gov. Vietnam vets had all of these symptoms too, although, I don't know if the proportion of effected people was the same. It could be worse now. Then again reporting was different back then. And of course WWI/WWII shell-shock was brutal too, I'm guessing far worse. Makes me wonder if there’s anything to dig up from the '20s and '30s related to the massive artillery use in WWI. The cannons themselves haven't fundamentally changed in well over a century, so if gun crews are getting rattled into illness it should’ve happened back then as well. Tinnitus can certainly drive one mad and even to suicide.

I've never experienced anything like some of these Marines have, but I did spend time around naval 5" & 16" gunfire (with double hearing protection) and afterward felt like I got hit by a mack truck. Though, this was not prolonged crashing booms & shockwaves and I recovered quickly with no ill effects.

After the Nov 9th midnight to 8am local time Gaza war of continuous bombing, artillery & extremely fierce gun battles lasting 9 hours, plus subterranean explosions, and massive shockwaves you could practically feel through the LIVE Gaza city camera, I would say some of those IDF soldiers on the ground (who make it out alive) will suffer TBIs. Can't imagine what the Palestinians are going through in north Gaza after 34 days of continuous bombardment. The shockwave echos throughout Gaza City is enough to toss you out of bed. Last night was also intense with air strikes & 155mm howitzers.

I had never heard of this critter until reading a story in the local news about a man in a community south of Tucson who was bitten by one and as a precaution underwent treatment for rabies. It turned out he had been feeding them which was pretty stupid considering they’re wild animals that will attack if feeling threatened or cornered.

What is a Coatimundi?

Four distinct species of coatimundi have been identified by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, all of them native to the Americas, although they are more common in Central and South America. IUCN lists Arizona’s white-nosed coatis as a “species of least concern” on their list of threatened species. Coatimundis are members of the raccoon family and the white-nosed coatis we have in Arizona are about the size of a small dog; males weigh up to 18 pounds and females are slightly smaller. They can be identified by their long snouts, semi-prehensile tails, and light on dark mask that often connects their white or tan nose to the rings of lighter fur around their eyes. The white-nosed coati looks like a stretched out and more slender version of a raccoon. They travel in troops and while walking, their long semi-prehensile tail is often comically visible towering above them like a furry brown (sometimes striped) periscope.

Where Do Coatimundi Live?

The white-nosed coati is distributed across a wide range, from as far north as Flagstaff, Arizona, eastward into New Mexico and Texas, and south to Mexico, Central America, and the far northwestern region of Colombia near the border with Panama. Overall, Arizona’s white-nosed coatis tend to prefer woodland and riparian habitats and rocky canyons generally at elevations from 4,500-7,500 feet.



Social Life

The Arizona white-nosed coati is a fascinating mammal that lives in "bands" of up to 30 individuals. These social creatures have a unique family structure where males live separately from females and young during the fall and winter months, reuniting in the spring to breed. After the female gives birth to up to six young and returns to the band, the adult males are pushed out and the young coatis are raised and protected within the safety of their individual matriarchal-structured group. The coati's social structure allows them to work together to find food, protect their young, and defend their territory. It's amazing how these animals can form such tight-knit communities, and their family dynamics are truly a wonder to behold.

Overall, coatimundis are fascinating creatures that play an important role in their ecosystems. By learning more about them and respecting their space, we can all appreciate these unique animals while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

A worrying new study suggests combined oral contraceptives shrink a region of the brain associated with regulating emotions and processing fear signals. 150+ million women worldwide use oral contraceptives.


This affects voting as well.

The research is published in the journal Frontiers of Endocrinology. Existing studies had already suggested that oral contraception might tamper with fear processing in women, but more rigorous research was needed. The new study aims to provide this.

The study was small-scale, with around 200 participants, male and female. MRI imaging was used examine the brain and map volume and cortical thickness of particular regions associated with fear processing and emotional control. The results clearly showed that use of oral contraceptives is associated with reduced cortical thickness of the centromedial prefrontal cortex. Oral contraceptives present risk factor, then, for "emotional regulation deficits" in their users.

One upside, potentially, is that these effects, at least, may be reversible. Cortical shrinkage was not observed in women who had discontinued use in the past. OCs act as a powerful disruptor of the menstrual cycle. Combined OCs (COCs) are the most common type. Despite these findings, with obvious society-wide implications, the researchers are quick to caution that no such implications can be inferred. Men and women with experience of the personality-bending effects of oral contraceptives are likely to disagree...

The lab-born male monkey was the product of an unprecedented experiment, which used the pluripotent
stem cells of two genetically distinct fertilized eggs from the same monkey species to create one living
and breathing long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

This is not the world's first living monkey artificially formed from the fusion of multiple fertilized eggs,
but it was the most mixed – or chimeric – of them all, according to researchers in China and the UK.
In science, an animal 'chimera' is a single organism made up of cells that derive from more than just
two parents.

In this particular animal's body, the cells and tissues created from two separate stem cell lines, one
from a donor embryo and another from a host embryo, were apparent in the brain, heart, kidney, liver,
gastrointestinal tract, testes, and the cells that turn into its sperm.

Of the 26 different tissue types that scientists measured in the live monkey, the contribution of extra donated
stem cells ranged from a low of 21 percent all the way up to 92 percent. This highest percentage was seen in
brain tissues. Previous studies have resulted in liveborn and terminated monkey chimeric fetuses before, with
offspring containing low donor cell contributions to various tissues of between 0.1 and 4.5 percent.

The newest chimeric monkey blew those stats out of the water. It survived for just ten days, which means the
ongoing health of chimeric monkeys is still a problem to be solved. "This is a long-sought goal in the field," says
reproductive engineer and senior author Zhen Liu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

"Specifically, this work could help us to generate more precise monkey models for studying neurological diseases
as well as for other biomedicine studies."

In a media conference, the lead author of the paper, geneticist Jing Cao from CAS, said that this was a basic
scientific advance because it proves for the first time that rich non-human primate chimeras are possible. The
field of chimeric animal research isn't without a spectrum of ethical concerns, though proponents maintain the
benefits of accurate models in testing diseases and therapies make their efforts worthwhile.

Since donor stem cells can be genetically edited, biomedical researchers could potentially test certain disease
outcomes in monkey models in the future. While it depends on the research purpose, the higher the contribution
of the donor stem cells in any target tissue, the more accurate the disease model can be.

In egg and sperm cells, a percentage of chimerism as low as 10 percent can be a useful model, according to
immunologist Miguel Esteban from CAS and the Beijing Genomics Institute, as these germ lines can theoretically
transfer to offspring.

In 2012, the first live chimeric monkeys were reported, but the donor cells in these creatures contributed to their
tissues at very low percentages (only around 4 percent). What's more, these chimeric tissues were "limited to
organs rich in blood", like the liver, spleen, and placenta, which suggests "blood mixture could be involved
rather than true chimerism in solid tissues."

The glowing solid tissues of this new chimeric monkey are filling scientists with delight.
When the team in China injected a donor set of pluripotent stem cells (which can differentiate into all cell types)
into week-old monkey blastocyst embryos, they made sure to label the donations with green fluorescent protein.
This way, any tissue or cell glowing green in the offspring could be clearly tied to the donated stem cell line.

When these carefully engineered embryos were implanted into female macaques, only six live births ensued, and
only one of these live monkeys, a male, showed stem-cell-derived tissue in multiple regions of its body. One of the
aborted fetuses also showed some level of chimerism, albeit at a lower percentage than the live chimeric monkey,
however, this fetus did not make it to birth.

Cao and colleagues admit that the overall efficiency of this process "remains low" (about half as successful as
creating an embryo without chimerism from in vitro fertilization), but it's a promising step in the right direction.

The low efficiency could be due to how the stem cells or the embryos are cultured in the lab. For instance, when
donor stem cells are injected into a host embryo, many cells undergo programmed cell death, so improving the
survival rate in both the embryo and fetus is an ongoing challenge the team hopes to refine in the future.

The research, Liu says, could help scientists better understand the early stages of stem cell differentiation in
primates, which is not nearly as well studied as in mice. "[W]e have provided strong evidence that naive monkey
pluripotent stem cells possess the capability of differentiating in vivo into all the various tissues composing a
monkey body," says Esteban.

"This study deepens our understanding of the developmental potential of pluripotent stem cells in primate species."

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Following the 2016 presidential election, a sensationalized narrative emerged that foreign “disinformation” affected the integrity of the election. These claims, fueled by left-wing election denialism about the legitimacy of President Trump’s victory, sparked a new focus on the role ofsocial media platforms in spreading such information.1 “Disinformation” think tanks and “experts,” government task forces, and university centers were formed, all to study and combat the alleged rise in alleged mis- and disinformation. As the House Committee on the Judiciary and the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government have shownpreviously, these efforts to combat so-called foreign influence and misinformation quickly mutated to include domestic—that is, American—speech.2

The First Amendment to the Constitution rightly limits the government’s role in monitoring and censoring Americans’ speech, but these disinformation researchers (often funded, at least in part, by taxpayer dollars) were not strictly bound by these constitutional guardrails. What the federal government could not do directly, it effectively outsourced to the newly emerging censorship-industrial complex.

Enter the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP), a consortium of “disinformation” academics led by Stanford University’s Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO) that worked directly with the Department of Homeland Security and the Global Engagement Center, a multi-agency entity housed within the State Department, to monitor and censor Americans’ online speech in advance of the 2020 presidential election. Created in the summer of 2020 “at the request” of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA),3 the EIP provided a way for the federal government to launder its censorship activities in hopes of bypassing both the First Amendment and public scrutiny.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the American public and lawmakers debated the merits of unprecedented, mid-election-cycle changes to election procedures.4 These issues, like all contemporary discourse about questions of political import, were extensively discussed on the world’s largest social media platforms—the modern town square. But as American citizens, including candidates in these elections, attempted to exercise their First Amendment rights on these platforms, their constitutionally protected speech was intentionally suppressed as a consequence of the federal government’s direct coordination with third-party organizations, particularly universities, and social media platforms.5

Speech concerning elections—the process by which Americans select their representatives—is of course entitled to robust First Amendment protections.6 This bedrock principle is even more critical as it relates to speech by political candidates.7 But as disinformation “experts” acknowledge, the labeling of any kind of speech is “inherently political”8 and itself a form of “censorship.”9

This interim staff report details the federal government’s heavy-handed involvement in the creation and operation of the EIP, which facilitated the censorship of Americans’ political speech in the weeks and months leading up to the 2020 election. This report also publicly reveals for the first time secret “misinformation” reports from the EIP’s centralized reporting system, previously accessible only to select parties, including federal agencies, universities, and Big Tech. The Committee and Select Subcommittee obtained these nonpublic reports from Stanford University only under the threat of contempt of Congress. These reports of alleged mis- and disinformation were used to censor Americans engaged in core political speech in the lead up to the 2020 election.

As this new information reveals, and this report outlines, the federal government and universities pressured social media companies to censor true information, jokes, [memes] and political opinions. This pressure was largely directed in a way that benefitted one side of the political aisle: true information posted by Republicans and conservatives was labeled as “misinformation” while false information posted by Democrats and liberals was largely unreported and untouched by the censors. The pseudoscience of disinformation is now—and has always been—nothing more than a political ruse most frequently targeted at communities and individuals holding views contrary to the prevailing narratives.

D. The State Department’s Direct Participation in the EIP’s Censorship Operation (pg 61)

The Global Engagement Center (GEC) is a multi-agency organization housed within the State Department, which Elon Musk has described as “[t]he worst offender in US government censorship & media manipulation.”149 The GEC and GEC-funded entities have, on multiple occasions flagged content to social media platforms that included Americans engaged in constitutionally protected speech.

Unlike CISA’s pretext of peripheral non-involvement, the EIP openly admitted that the GEC “reported tickets” to the EIP in its final report looking back on the 2020 election cycle.151 In fact, according to that report, the GEC was one of the most frequently tagged organizations in the EIP’s Jira system.152

On October 15, 2020, Adela Levis, an “Academic and Think-Tank Liaison” with the GEC, sent an email invitation to a meeting with the title “GEC/Election Integrity Partnership.”153 In the body of the email, Levis wrote that the meeting was “to discuss a concrete idea we have for possible support of the EIP effort.”

EPILOGUE (pg 93)

It is no surprise that Stanford University attempted to refuse to turn over documents responsive to the Committee’s subpoena: they reveal that the EIP was not a non-partisan “school project” comprised of students and researchers interested in combatting misinformation online. Instead, from start to finish, the EIP operation worked directly with the federal government and disproportionally targeted conservative-oriented speech.

After the 2020 election, what others have deemed the “censorship industrial complex,” played out as expected. After President Trump fired CISA Director Chris Krebs in November 2020, Mr. Krebs created the Krebs Stamos Group with Alex Stamos, the head of the EIP and the SIO, in January 2021. Matt Masterson left CISA at the end of 2020 and took a position as a non-research fellow with Stanford, working with the SIO and its Virality Project.

With the election over and the American people questioning the wisdom of lockdowns and the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines, the EIP reconstituted itself as the Virality Project. Again working with the federal government, the SIO launched the Virality Project as a “a global study aimed at understanding the disinformation dynamics specific to the COVID-19 crisis.” The Virality Project again used Jira tickets. Though Stanford was less explicit and specific in its recommendations for censorship as it was under the EIP model, social media platforms still dutifully removed content flagged by Stanford:

Israeli television show Eretz Nehederet, meaning ‘wonderful country’, has poked fun at Western liberal support for the Hamas terrorist organization in a new clip. 



The 19-minute skit, entitled "Welcome to Columbia Untisemity," opens with a doctored image of the Columbia University’s logo. The new logo features the Palestinian flag with “from the river to the sea” inscribed below it and two crossed-out Magen Davids.

Columbia University has been at the center of multiple scandals since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, with one professor actively praising the October 7 attack on civilians.

Throughout the show, the comedians make fun of the ignorance and apparent hypocrisy of students supporting Hamas, a registered terrorist organization that does not share the values associated with Western liberalism.



Queers for Palestine

One of the comedians waved an LGBT+ flag that has the Palestinian flag contained inside; this flag is often used by the ‘Queers for Palestine’ movement.

Being LGBT+ in Gaza is a crime punishable by death, and so the support for Hamas and for Palestinian nationalism from some members of the LGBT community can be seen as shocking for some.

I've seen references in multiple news articles that Zelensky is being encouraged to negotiate with Putin to end the war.

 They began amid concerns among U.S. and European officials that the war has reached a stalemate and about the ability to continue providing aid to Ukraine, officials said. Biden administration officials also are worried that Ukraine is running out of forces, while Russia has a seemingly endless supply,  

the war does indeed look stalemated.  much was made of the Ukraine offensive this year, but it didn't go far.
the West is tired of $upporting the war.
and no doubt Russia has a huge manpower advantage.
Putin has shown willingness to push the issue, despite casualties, and whatever internal pressure he faces doesn't appear likely to change his mind any time soon.
so...hopefully they'll work something out before a whole generation of young Ukrainians dies.
