We must, before doing or saying anything else in this blog, firstly thank W.G. for spotting and sharing these stories. The reason why is rather simple: because thus far the revolt of the states in passing state legislation recognizing gold and silver as money and legal tender, and of states opening their own bullion depositories, has thus far been confined to "flyover country" where we who are all part of Darth Hillary's "basket of deplorables " all live. One would expect such "nonsense" as bullion as money and state bullion depositories from us rubes in Wyoming or Tennessee or Texas.

But when the revolt spreads to places like North Carolina, a bastion of transplanted northeastern reason and "progressivity", it might be time to start worrying:

Now you'll note that the precise language of the article here is less than comforting, for again, the idea of the issuance of physical bearer certificates of deposit is utterly missing, and hence the idea of convertibility and convenience of exchange is missing. Rather, the bill is hinting at bullion backed "crypto currency", and I believe my objections to the idea that crypto is  anywhere close to a real currency are well enough known that there is no reason to rehearse them again here. What the North Carolina bill as it reads appears to be doing is simply creating the ground for state purchase of and speculation in private crypto currency as it is of purchase of and speculation in bullion.

There is, however, something noteworthy about this article, because a clear reason for doing so is articulated explicitly, and that is the loss of state confidence in the federal reserve "dollar":

Don't talk to me about a crypto wallet or password or any electronic nonsense. I want the piece of paper with all its anti-counterfeiting measures. Period. End of discussion.

I am encouraged by all the states taking these measures, don't get me wrong, but I am also insistent that the key missing piece is the piece of paper saying that "x" amount of silver or gold is on deposit in the State X bullion depository, and that this certificate can be redeemed for that amount. Show me the facsimile or the first printings of such certificates, and I'll believe you're fully serious.

Now with that in mind, let's go to the other partially encouraging story shared by W.G.  We all "just know" that Real Progressive Civilization only exists in the narrow strip of land east of the Hudson River, and running roughly from New York City and Albany to Boston, with a few places like Hartford and Providence in between; or it exists only in that narrow strip running from roughly from Philadelphia, through Baltimore, to Swampington, D.C. (Sorry, Richmond, you're not really a part of Civilization because of your Confederate past). Sometimes, however, a little of that Real Civilization oozes, slurps, or dribbles over onto New Jersey. Even if the transvestic pedophile received his desired accoutrement, the prison might be able to restrict his diabolic practice somewhat to ensure the "maintenance of a safe, secure, and orderly operation of a correctional facility," according to the 2019 NJDOC resource guide.

Volz's lawsuit suggests the prison has already applied some limits in a discriminatory fashion.
The child rapist suggested that prior to Dec. 21, 2022, he was "denied the ability to hold corporate worship during appropriate times of day, despite other religious groups being able to worship at those same appropriate times of day that have been requested."

The suit insinuates that the alleged discrepancy "could be viewed by the community as a form of proselytizing because it encourages participation in some religious groups by incentivizing conversion to those religions," singling out the prison's Jewish population as recipients of alleged unfair favor.

The child rapist seeks $9,950 in compensatory damages, stressing the alleged discrimination has left him with "anxiety due to a lack of information, emotional stress, time loss, uncertainty and resultant planning difficulty for religious holy days and sacraments."

VAST AND LIGHTLY-POPULATED

First, let’s discuss basic geography. The American Redoubt consists of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and the eastern halves of both Oregon and Washington. This is a vast and lightly-populated region. The region is dominated by the northern Rocky Mountains. The terrain varies from wide open prairies to steep mountainous canyons.

The driving distances in the Redoubt can be daunting. For example, it takes nearly 14 hours to drive across the width of Montana. Some Redoubters have work commute distances of more than 60 miles, twice a day, five days a week. A lot of places are[i] truly[/i] remote. If you lived in Winnett, Montana, the nearest Walmart would be 85 miles away, in Billings. Thankfully, the speed limits on the Interstate freeways are as high as 80 miles per hour.  For folks in Dubois, Wyoming, it is 193 miles (2 hours and 50 minutes, in good weather) to the nearest good-sized city, for shopping. That is Casper  — the second largest city in the state, and Casper has a population of just under 60,000. If you lived in Augusta, Montana, driving to Kalispell, Montana for shopping would take you 3 hours and 5 minutes, in good weather. This is because Augusta sits on the east side of the roadless 1.5 million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness area. The straight-line distance from Augusta to Kalispell is only 100 miles, but the[i] road[/i] distance between them is 198 miles.


Idaho has the most designated wilderness land of any of the “Lower 48” continental United States (CONUS.)  The largest of these is the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness Area: 2,366,827 acres. (That Wilderness is bigger than Delaware.) Transiting the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness Area from the little off-grid hamlet of Shoup, Idaho, west to Riggins, Idaho, is normally done only in [i]one[/i] direction, downstream, by whitewater raft. (Hence the name “River of No Return.”) But driving from Shoup to Riggins takes 6 hours and 35 minutes via the shortest route, even though the straight-line distance is only 98 miles. Driving around that big roadless wilderness does take a while!

[b]Population and Population Densities:[/b]

Idaho: 1,634,000 (22 people per square mile)
Montana: 1,024,000 (7.5 people per square mile)
Wyoming: 584,000 (6 people per square mile)
Eastern Oregon:  About 300,000 (6.5 people per square mile).
[b]Note:[/b] Nearly half of the population of Eastern Oregon lives within a 50-mile radius of the city of Bend.
Eastern Washington: About 475,000 (11 people per square mile).
[b]Note: [/b] More than half of the population of Eastern Washington resides in Spokane or in the Tri-Cities.  This leaves the rest of eastern Washington very lightly populated. For example, Ferry County has just 7,178 people. (3.5 people per square mile)
[b]To put those figures in perspective:[/b]

• The[i] average[/i] population density for the 48 contiguous states (CONUS) is 111 people per square mile.
  
• The population density of Pennsylvania and Ohio are both around 285 people per square mile.
  
• The population density of Tennessee is 159 people per square mile.

• The entire population of Wyoming is less than the population of metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia.

The drug regime is used in conjunction with a breast pump to mimic the changes a women's body undergoes during the late stages of pregnancy and shortly after the birth of a child.

The Biden administration plans to send cluster munitions, which strew small bomblets over a wide area, to Ukraine to strengthen its hand in a high-stakes offensive against Russian forces, senior U.S. officials said.

The White House has agreed to grant a waiver under the U.S. arms export laws to send the weapons, formally known as dual-purpose improved conventional munitions, or DPICM.

The administration is expected to announce the decision Friday as part of a broader package of military assistance, U.S. officials said.

Ukraine has long appealed for the weapons, and the Pentagon has said they could be effective when employed against Russian troop and armored formations and Russian trench lines.

The munitions “would be useful, especially against dug-in Russian positions on the battlefield,” Laura Cooper, a senior Defense Department official, told Congress last month.

Human-rights groups say unexploded submunitions could maim or kill civilians long after a conflict ends, which initially made the White House’s National Security Council reluctant to approve the transfer.

But the possibility the cluster munitions could help Ukraine’s efforts at a critical stage in the conflict has swayed opinion within the administration and among some lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Proponents of the decision also say that the provision of cluster munitions would reduce Ukraine’s dependence on 155mm artillery shells, of which the U.S. has a limited supply.

More than 110 countries have signed an international Convention on Cluster Munitions that prohibits all use, transfer, production and stockpiling of cluster bombs. But the list of signatories contains notable absences.

The U.S., Ukraine, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and South Korea haven’t signed the convention. Neither has Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Turkey nor most countries in the Middle East.

Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, who didn’t confirm the decision, said that the Pentagon has several variants of the munitions. To mitigate the risk to civilians, the munitions that the U.S. has considered providing have a low dud rate, he said.

Older cluster munitions with dud rates higher than 2.35% wouldn’t be provided, added Ryder.

Rep. Adam Smith of Washington, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee said in May that the provision of cluster munitions should be considered, particularly since the Russians were already using them.

“Our cluster munitions have a much lower dud rate than the Russian cluster munitions,” Smith told a meeting of the Council on Foreign Relations in May. “I’m not in favor of spreading cluster munitions around the world, but in this particular case the Russians are already doing that in Ukraine.”

According to the Human Rights Watch’s global Cluster Munition Monitor 2022 report, cluster munitions fired by Russian forces have caused at least 689 civilian casualties in Ukraine. Russian forces have attacked 10 Ukrainian regions with hundreds of cluster munitions, while Ukrainian forces have used cluster munitions rockets on at least two occasions, the group said.

While the provision of cluster munitions could give a boost to Kyiv, they are not a panacea since Ukrainian forces have also been slowed by dense Russian minefields.

The U.S. military currently reserves the right to use cluster munitions against U.S. adversaries, including in a conflict with North Korea.

In 2008, the Pentagon said that U.S. forces would only use cluster munitions after 2018 if their dud rate was less than 1%. But the Trump administration amended that policy in 2017, saying that cluster munitions could be effective against enemy forces operating across a broad area.
