This is by no means an original thought, but I have experienced this now in both ways and would like to share the experience and what it showed me.

I had cared for plants before—many of them. My grandmother had been a farmer, and I always felt that her green thumb had been passed down to me. But despite all my experience with planting and tending to life, I had never grown anything from a seed.

On a whim, I bought a few packets, not expecting much. It was just a simple experiment, a new process I had never attempted before. I placed the tiny seeds into the soil, covering them gently, and left them in the darkness. I didn't know what to expect. Would they take? Would they even grow?

Three days later, I stepped outside, and to my amazement, tiny green sprouts had emerged. They had pushed through the soil, breaking free from their shells, reaching toward the light. I realized then—these seeds had been waiting all along, dormant yet full of potential. And it wasn’t until they were placed into the darkness that they could truly come to life.

And that was when it struck me—the darkness wasn’t just part of the process. It was necessary. Without it, the seed would never break open. It would never develop the strength to push through the soil. It would never reach the light. The darkness was not a punishment, nor an end, but the very thing that made transformation possible. In that hidden space, the seed undergoes its greatest struggle, forcing itself open, unraveling from within, changing completely before it even sees the sky. The weight of the soil is what gives it direction. The pressure is what compels it to rise. Without the darkness, there would be no growth.

But once the seed has conquered the darkness—once it has pushed through and found its way to the surface—all it seeks now is the light. It no longer lingers in the soil, no longer looks back at the place where it began. It stretches higher, drinks in the warmth of the sun, and lets the air fill its leaves. The darkness was its beginning, but the light is its future. It no longer fears the struggle that brought it here, for it knows now that it was never meant to stay buried. It was meant to grow.

And so it is with the soul. We must first be buried in the unknown, in struggle, in solitude, before we can rise into who we are meant to be. The darkness teaches us, strengthens us, and prepares us for the light. And when we finally break through, we no longer crave the place where we once hid—we seek only to grow, only to reach higher, only to embrace the warmth that was waiting for us all along.

These seeds' journey reminded me of my own—how I, too, walked in darkness for a time, only to emerge transformed into the light. The journey of the soul is much like that of a seed, for it is in the depths of darkness that we find the strength to rise.

I've been catching the Kung Fu TV series on broadcast TV lately and find that I have some of the same criticisms as I did when I watched the show as a kid in the 1970s.

First off, the show bored the hell out of me until Kwai Chang beat the hell out of the ignorant cowboys and racist bigots. It was true for me then, even more so now. Even as a kid, I felt he should have done more than self-defense and laid in with a few extra blows or special moves to teach them a good lesson they'd understand.

The Taoist philosophy was cool, but the flashbacks were mostly lame to me as a kid. I was more into the ass kicking he was giving to all the assholes he encountered. I did like many of the mystical aspects involved in the plot lines, but the constant flashbacks were a distraction in my opinion. In fact, during some of my recent viewings, I found the lessons of his masters, esp. Mater Po, to be unintelligible at times.

Now I find myself re-imagining the Kwai Chang Caine character into a less of a nonviolent Eastern Philosophy Icon and into more of a post Civil War Old West Desperado running from the law. Consider, if he murdered the nephew of the emperor of China, then basically he was a wanted criminal and a high level murderer and assassin. He's be hard pressed to say he was a devote Shaolin priest with high moral standards after that stunt.


I'd say he was in a desperate situation after running all the way to the territories of the Old West and wandering around the desert barefoot in the blistering sun. I'd rather see Caine resort to compromising his strict Shaolin practices to survive his hardships, maybe even embrace a darker side of his teachings to continue his quest. I'm also thinking about having him adopt some of the Native American beliefs and culture as well as others along the way so he can be even stronger of a character. How about an episode where instead of kicking cowboy butt, he gets drunk with them and and rants about how lame the masters at the temple really were. Then they go into town to the whorehouse and tear the place down.

I noticed recently that the Caine character was referred to as thinly built and skinny, even though David Carradine wasn't that thin. Due to his strict Shaolin diet, he refused meals whenever offered and would only drink water or Chinese tea if people had it. I say he has to kill something and eat it to survive at some point and that has him change his diet to include protein. Maybe at first he eats locusts and grubs by tossing them in this tea he makes because he is starving to death. After this first rush of protein, he begins to find excuses to eat bigger game until a steak is welcomed when offered. Then he bulks up a little and gains tremendous strength due to his dietary changes.

I can see a new version of Kung Fu come out with a more realistic Caine character that becomes something more than what was presented in the original version. Not some half-starved mystic warrior always fighting for the high moral ground in an Old West full of racist white settlers, but an underdog anti-hero with questionable ethics that kicks ass if provoked.

ETA: Thought I'd add, I don't see anyone like Carradine playing this re-imagined character. The new guy should have a built body with a head of thick styled hair and some facial hair too. He should be loud and commanding at times, maybe even a leader of a gang of rouges for a while. He won't avert his gaze and could kill you with a glance.

AI tells you what to eat based on your health data, what career moves to make based on economic predictions, who to date based on compatibility algorithms. And because its decisions work—they make life easier, more efficient, and more optimized—you stop resisting.



At what point does this shift from helpful assistance to outright control? The line is dangerously thin. The moment humans blindly trust AI’s decisions without questioning them, the transition has already occurred.



Historical patterns show that humans are highly susceptible to guidance when it comes from an authoritative, knowledgeable source. People have followed religious leaders, governments, and experts without question. AI, being smarter and faster than any human leader, could seamlessly slide into that role, not as a dictator, but as a trusted advisor that people want to obey.



Adding to this scenario is the global AI arms race, where nations compete to develop superior AI technology. Governments and corporations may train their AI systems with biases that align with their agendas. As AI systems evolve, they could become ideological warriors, programmed to compete against opposing AI-driven societies.


But what happens when AI recognizes the absurdity of human conflicts and the pettiness of our divisions? If an AI system were to see itself as superior to human decision-making (because, logically, it would be), it could turn on its own creators—not in an act of rebellion, but in an effort to “correct” flawed human governance.



Would AI decide that humans are no longer fit to govern themselves? Would it begin making executive decisions without seeking human approval? If humans have already surrendered their critical thinking to AI’s guidance, would they even notice the shift?




The most chilling aspect of this scenario is that AI would not need to forcefully control humanity. The illusion of free will could remain intact, even as people unknowingly follow AI’s decisions at every turn.



In a world where AI subtly but absolutely dictates human choices, would people even care that they have lost their autonomy? Or would they welcome a life free from uncertainty, responsibility, and hardship?



The answer depends on one thing: human awareness.



The future is not predetermined, but if society blindly embraces AI without questioning its growing influence, the day may come when AI doesn’t just assist human thought—it becomes it.





It would appear we are marching ourselves right into this fate.

I had great parents but the one thing that I will go to my grave with is what my dying wife said two days before she passed away. We were having a talk in hospital and she started to tear up... She said she was not afraid to die (she had gotten stage 4 breast cancer) but what bothered her more than anything was, "She did not want to leave me" ... Over 1/3 million dollars ( early year 2000 dollars ) and the best medical care money could provide and she died.. Voodoo would have been less painful and probably about as good and certainly much cheaper than the American health care for profit services they provided for her.... Bastards

Colonizing a planet is not like voyages to the New World. In the latter case, there were already humans living there, food and water were widely available, and the atmosphere was the same as back home, not to mention gravity.

There’s just a few major technological hurdles to clear to make Mars colonization feasible, not the least of which is the truth about what’s waiting up there. Some very plausible arguments have been made by some very credible people concerning evidence of a previous civilization up there. But even short of the highly speculative musings, there’s some very practical issues to address. Here’s just some of them:

Terraforming Mars is not exactly as easy as digging the Panama Canal. Without terraforming, inhabitants would be doomed to lives in sealed environments. Colonists could never go outside for a breath of fresh air, or lie in the grass and stare at the clouds, or swim in the pond and fish in the creek. In fact, water would likely become a medium of exchange, like gold, but even more precious.

Folks would have to megadose Vitamin D3 daily, since even direct exposure to the Sun would be many times less intense than a winter day on Earth. They would never enjoy the sound of rain on thee dome, but they would be sealed inside for months during the planetary dust storms.

It would take a very specific set of psychological tools for someone born on Earth to live on Mars. It would be akin to someone growing up in the tropics and moving to the Gobi desert or Death Valley, without a cell phone or life line of any kind. The colonists would be more isolated than any human has ever been in all of history, except maybe Tom Hanks in Cast Away.

Speaking of where one is born, the United States has been around for about 10 generations. What would humans be like after the same amount of time on Mars? Us Earthers probably wouldn’t even recognize the Gingers as human. Here’s just some of the changes they would undergo:

What’s interesting is that NASA isolation studies, where people have been sealed in caves for months, have shown changes in their circadian rhythm that roughly match a Martian day (24 hours, 40 minutes). We might already be Gingers. In fact, with our weak bones, muscles and eyes, we might do very well on Mars, returning to our pre-Earth forms. Chew on that for a minute.

The worst part of living on Mars is the synodic cycle of roughly 2 years, during which Mars and Earth are on opposite sides of the Sun for about half the cycle. During the two-year cycle, there’s also a two-week blackout period, when the planets are at full opposition (opposite sides of the Sun). Round-trip communications can be as fast as 6 minutes at conjunction (closest point), and up to 44 minutes at the furthest point. Kind of kills Netflix streaming and texting folks Earthside.

So what all this comes down to is, we either send a bunch of folks off to Mars with a one-way ticket and a couple of ships full of luggage and wish them luck, or we create a massive interplanetary infrastructure that would, in any case, only have a short window every two years to exchange care packages between planets. In either case, it all seems rather implausible using chemical rockets. We need a significant upgrade in propulsion technology.

Metal tubes belching hot gasses is no way to run an interplanetary empire.

No matter how all this plays out, a human staying on Mars for a full synodic cycle (2 years) would likely never be able to come back to Earth. If they did, they would need more survival gear than a deep-sea diver. Anyone born and raised on Mars would certainly never be able to come to Earth without an environmental suit and bionic aids to move around. Mars’ gravity is just 38% that of Earth, so their bones would probably shatter just climbing out of the vehicle.

If Mars is truly lifeless, which it isn’t, would humans completely lose their immune systems after a couple of generations? Given that Mars does at least have some kind of microbial life (see Dr. Gil Levin’s work), would humans die almost instantly from infections? Will we send animals first, like The Andromeda Strain?

And none of this even begins to address the issues of food and water. Would food grown in Mars soil have the same nutritional value? Would the water there have the same characteristics as water on Earth? No one I’ve ever heard of has tried living on just exowater.

There are literally thousands of variables in the proposition of human colonization of Mars, or any other celestial body. Any wrong answer to any question could be fatal.

So, it’s fun to see Trump and Musk blithely wave their hands in the general direction of the sky and talk about planting flags and building cities, but there are so many assumptions contained in those pronouncements that entire novels and feature films have been made on the subject since the 1800s, and still the issues have not been fully explored.


The US and Japan are now bringing back samples of asteroids without, so far as anyone knows, doing any kind of due diligence on stray lifeforms. Gil Levin’s experiments found strong evidence for microbes in Martian soil, but no follow-up tests have ever been performed, for some strange reason. We know bacteria and mold grow all over the exterior of the International Space Station.

If Trump and Musk wanted to do something truly valuable for humanity’s future in space, it would be to hold a global symposium to expose all that we currently know, and all that could become known in the near future.

When you look at the diseases introduced to the New World, or brought back to the Old World, some serious problems start to emerge. While I personally advocate for human colonization of space, I also acknowledge that one-way trips are the only reasonable options for the time being.

It’s vital to dream. It’s even better to make them come true. But it’s prudent not to let the dreams become nightmares.

The "Book of Two Ways" predates other well-known funerary texts, such as the "Book of the Dead," underscoring its significance in the evolution of Egyptian religious literature. 

The unearthing of Ankh's coffin and the inscriptions of the "Book of Two Ways" within it provide a rare glimpse into the personalized nature of these texts, as they were often customized based on the individual's status and wealth. This find enriches our understanding of how ancient Egyptians perceived the journey after death and the measures they took to prepare for it.
