In a 2022 article published in the journal Nature, a group of researchers determined that 12 types of face masks all “exceeded the acceptable exposure level to TiO2 by inhalation,” and called for regulatory standards for the use of TiO2, a potential human carcinogen.
The Latest Research
The latest study of this type, “Comprehensive Risk Assessment of the Inhalation of Plasticizers From the Use of Face Masks,” which recently appeared in the journal Environment International, tested four types of face masks for the presence of 31 types of plasticizers. It also investigated to what extent these compounds and others were released (and thus inhaled) during simulated mask use.
While “overall plasticizer concentration was similar in all four face mask types,” the researchers report, they found surgical masks and FFP2s (widely used in Europe) had high plasticizer release rates of around 4 percent (3.9 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively).

“Face masks are predominantly composed of synthetic materials,” most commonly polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyester, wrote the researchers, of the group Environmental and Water Chemistry for Human Health (ONHEALTH), part of the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research in Barcelona, Spain.
Manufacturers also incorporate additives such as phthalates and organophosphate esters (OPEs) into face masks as plasticizers “to increase softness and flexibility, or as a flame retardant,” the researchers explain. These are not the only chemical compounds found in face masks. Others include heavy metals, PFAS, and VOCs.
In the ONHEALTH study, the average plasticizer concentrations found in different mask types were:
7.27 µg (micrograms)—surgical masks
8.61 µg—reusable masks
11.0 µg—KN-95 masks
13.9 µg—FFP2 masks
Inhalation Simulation Tests
To investigate the amounts of plasticizers the masks released, the researchers conducted inhalation experiments on paper-mâché dummy heads to replicate typical use in humans. The findings showed that higher temperatures mimicking human breathing caused higher release of plastic additives. “The high-temperature condition [in the experiment] presents the worst-case scenario for the release of plastic additives,” the researchers wrote.
The amounts of compounds the masks released varied widely, ranging from 0.1 percent to 95 percent depending on the specific compound and mask type. “Notably, OPEs exhibited a mean release percentage of 1.0%, similar to phthalates, which showed a 1.2% release,” the researchers wrote.
The mask types with the highest overall release rates were surgical masks and FFP2s (3.9 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively). The reusable masks showed the lowest release rate, averaging 0.6 percent. The release rate of KN-95s was 1.2 percent. One surgical mask showed a release rate of one compound, acetyl tributyl citrate, a potential endocrine disruptor, of 95 percent.
Masks ‘An Additional Exposure Pathway’
Importantly, the values for the specific compounds the study tested for “remained below the established threshold limits,” the researchers wrote. However, plasticizers are present in more than just face masks; they are commonly incorporated into toys, food packaging, clothing, cosmetics, cleaning products, and other items most people come into contact with daily.
Face masks “represent an additional exposure pathway that, when considered alongside other more predominant routes such as indoor/outdoor inhalation, dermal absorption, and dietary intake, makes the total exposure worthy of consideration,” the researchers wrote.
“Due to the proven exposure to plasticizers, the genotoxic, immunotoxic, and teratogenic [birth defect] risk remains regardless of the calculated values, particularly for children, pregnant women, and other risk groups.”
Plasticizers have been found in pregnant women’s blood and have been implicated in the dramatic drop in global sperm counts over the past 50 years, raising concern that these chemicals damage fertility and the health of future generations.

When I read the following article shared with us by T.M. (with our gratitude), my first initial thought was that I was having yet another episode of deja poo. The mystery of Argentina’s gold: Milei admits that it was transferred abroad, without specifying the quantities or destination

According to the article, it would seem that either the government of Argentina, or its central bank, or perhaps both, were behind a covert very quiet smuggling transfer of Argentina's gold to hidden unknown places and persons abroad: From the first three paragraphs:

The emphasized portion of the previous quotation indicates the nature of the interpretive problem: is the Argentine government paying off creditors with its gold? - recall only the confrontations between that country's government and its President Kircher a few years ago - or is the country trying to safeguard its assets by hiding them and placing them beyond the legal reach of creditors?  There is, possibly, a clue just a little further on; continuing the citation from where we broke off:

In other words, it appears that Senor Milei's administration has decided to use Argentina's gold reserves as a means of earning "interest", and that means that the gold reserves have been hypothecated as a part of investments or collateral for a loan, as the article suggests:

The president said that Argentina already has sufficient U.S. dollars available to pay the maturity of interest on foreign debt — a payment of about $1.6 billion — which is due in January 2025. If this is the purpose of transferring the gold abroad, the government’s bet would consist of attempting to convey tranquility to the financial markets. On the other hand, by turning to gold, it suggests that Argentina doesn’t have sufficient liquid assets and is now forced to resort to its most precious treasure.

So what's going on?

At the beginning of this blog I briefly reviewed all those blogs I've written on this site over the years about gold and the attempts of various countries to repatriate their reserves from western vaults in Paris, London, and New York.  The countries attempting to do this were Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Venezuela, with Germany sparking the round of repatriation, while other stories involving gold-clad tungsten bars popped up in China and Canada, where such bars were used to acquire liquid capital. In the case of the German repatriation, the amount sought, and the amount delivered and repatriated, were two different things, and to add insult to injury, there were questions about the assay purity of the bars that were repatriated among many circles in Germany that had been following the story and raising inconvenient questions that the Bundesbank was in no hurry to answer.

In this case, the article has outlined the conventional interpretive and speculative possibilities adequately. But there are some high octane speculative possibilities that invite us to take the plunge off the end of the speculation twig and into the deep canyon below. Argenina's gold was not repatriated, but depatriated. But in all other respects it resembles the repatriation stories by having something in common with them: for whatever reason, countries are trying to get their gold reserves out of the central banking system of "the west", i.e., the central banks of France, Great Britain, and above all, the USA. And that effort appears to have been to try and bring the precious yellow bars to the European continent itself.  If that's the case, then my guess would be that Argentina's gold is either in the vaults of the Tower of Basel (The Bank of International Swindles Settlements), or in the vaults of some large Swiss investment bank, such as Union Bank of Zurich or Credit Suisse.

As for Argentina's potential motives, the article has adequately outlined these as well, but perhaps there are others as well. With the growing Chinese influence in South America and with the Argentine government, perhaps a depatriation of Argentina's gold reserves to Europe was and is a way for that country to hedge its bets, placing its gold where it will be outside the reach of China, but where it could conceivably be hypothecated in loans and investments designed to secure Argentina a place at the BRICS table. Time will tell.

Merchant, who has purported ties to Iran, travelled to New York City to meet the undercover agents and was arrested before he could flee the country.


"This dangerous murder-for-hire plot exposed in today's complaint allegedly was orchestrated by a Pakistani national with close ties to Iran and is straight out of the Iranian playbook," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a press release.



"A foreign-directed plot to kill a public official, or any U.S. citizen, is a threat to our national security and will be met with the full might and resources of the FBI."


Attorney General Merrick Garland, meanwhile, said the Department of Justice would spare no resources in disrupting Iran's plans, while others praised the work of federal agents.
"This case underscores the dedication and formidable efforts of our agents, analysts and prosecutors in New York, Houston, and Dallas," Acting Assistant Director Christie Curtis of the FBI New York Field Office said.


"Their success in neutralizing this threat not only prevented a tragic outcome but also reaffirms the FBI's commitment to protecting our nation and its citizens from both domestic and international threats."


Merchant remains in federal custody and the FBI is still investigating the case.
The plot unfolded just a few weeks before an attempt on Donald Trump's life at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The young man who fired at Trump in that incident is believed to have been acting alone.

After arriving, he allegedly contacted a person whom he believed could help with the assassination plot. That unnamed contact later reported Mr Merchant to the police.
Mr Merchant allegedly made a "finger gun" motion with his hand when talking about what he wanted to do.
The indictment said the job would not be a "one-time opportunity" and that contacts services would be needed on an ongoing basis.

Faber noted that Logitech was not “necessarily super far away” from making the forever mouse a reality, but added that the high price of its extreme durability may require the company to add a subscription model to help make it profitable.


The average price of a mouse or a keyboard is about $26, Faber said, and Logitech has the opportunity to create a higher priced, premium product that delivers more quality. While Faber acknowledged that consumers may be shocked by the concept of a subscription mouse, she said the quality is worth it.


“Imagine it’s like your Rolex. You’re going to really love that,” she told the Verge.
Logitech did not immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment.


The hardware company is no stranger to bold mouse ideas. In April it announced a mouse with a built-in AI button that could be used to launch an AI prompt builder to help summarize text or write emails.


Faber’s mouse-as-a-service concept is the latest example of the increasing prevalence of subscription-based business models in unusual categories. While customers may be used to paying a subscription for movie or music streaming, now hardware companies are trying to get in on the trend. 



Some customers have already decried Logitech’s idea of adding yet another subscription for an everyday object. One user on Twitter said there is no need for a “forever mouse,” because their mouse from 30 years ago has held up just fine.
