Helluva story...Months after Trump visited North Korea, a SEAL team botched a mission to intercept Kim's communications, in a panic killed several shellfish divers and sank their bodies, abandoned their spyware and called for a risky extraction in shallow water. America is back.

How a Top Secret SEAL Team 6 Mission Into North Korea Fell Apart

Apparently SpecWar sneaks into North Korea now & then for snoop 'n poops — but the SEALs crossed paths with a vessel and, worried they were blown, killed everybody on board and RTB'd without planting their surveillance equipment!

Congress never briefed about the botched NK raid, per the Times.
The Times implies the SEALs target was a comms switch or similar gear, not unlike Ivy Bells and other past ops, that required physical access to tap.

The raid, per NYT, had no tactical ISR for fear the Norks would spot it. And space ISR wasn't granular or operational enough.

With regard to the office politics, it's also possible that decision makers decided on the risky SEAL raid because they could launch it quicker than a more covert intelligence agency-style plan to recruit real Koreans and have them plant the tap.

The fact that somebody inside the family has given this whole thing, lock, stock and barrel, to the Times suggests that it's already well known in international spy circles and that the SEALs involved have forthcoming books about the various NK raids.

"You may know them as cold cases. We call them classified."

Back in the 90s I was somewhere off the coast of South Korea, near to North Korea with two platoons of SEALs and two platoons South Korean SEALs and a sub lurking nearby with possibly another platoon of SEALs. We drop them into zodiacs along with their diving equipment and packs of who knows what and they sped off towards NK. We would pick them up later under cover of darkness. Far as I know, nobody was left behind, but they all looked totally exhausted with cuts & scrapes. Never did learn what they were doing, told never ask but of course I had to ask one of the SEALs as he was same rank as me and his reply was, "training mission, we do this shit all the time in freezing fuckin cold ass water". Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't.

Goliathus: the adult African goliath beetle (named after the biblical giant Goliath) are among the largest insects on Earth, if measured in terms of size, bulk and weight. Goliath beetles measure from 60–110 millimetres (2.4–4.3 in) for males and 50–80 millimetres (2.0–3.1 in) for females. They can be found in many of Africa's tropical forests, where they feed primarily on tree sap and fruit. Unlike in Australia, these won't kill you.

We certainly have been saturated with Karen histrionics the past five years. The word "histrion" comes from the Latin histrio, which meant "actor" or "mime," and which in turn is a loanword from the Etruscan hister. Histriones were originally actors in Ancient Rome who entertained audiences with exaggerated gestures, costumes, and dance...Jesters, and from this comes the term "histrionic," which describes theatrical or exaggerated behavior. Awful lot of that on the world's stage.

With the war over and his job done, Admiral John S. McCain Sr. returned to his home in California and died Sept 6, 1945, just four days after witnessing the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. He had earlier joked that he was planning to celebrate the Allied victory in the Pacific by creating three new cocktails named "Zeke," "Jill," and "Judy" after types of Japanese planes. "Each time you drink one, you can say 'splash one Judy' or "splash one Zeke," McCain said.

Sept 6, 1982: the Danish frigate HDMS Peder Skram accidentally launched a Harpoon missile due to a technical malfunction. The so-called 'Whoopsie Missile' ("Hovsa Missil" in Danish) traveled 34 kilometers at low altitude, severing several power lines before eventually striking a group of trees and exploding. The fireball and subsequent shockwave annihilated four nearby unoccupied summer cottages and caused minor damage to a further 130 buildings in Lumsaas, Denmark. Amazingly, no one was killed nor injured.

Looking for black people in this video. Not finding them.

You see, in DC the worst crime is in predominantly black neighborhoods. As of 2020 census, 41% of the DC population is black. So where are all the black people in this Soros funded "protest"?

I'll tell you why there are so few: DC's black population is the primary beneficiary of Trump's crackdown on DC crime. These "protesters" are all white Democrat self-appointed "elites" who live in crime-free Northwest DC (or the DC suburbs) in their $2+ million homes.

White Democrats (not all obviously) feel a congenital need to virtue signal, even if it means killing black people. Then they go home in their lulu yoga pants, Allbirds loafers and Subaru Forester, where they open a $200 bottle of wine and celebrate themselves over all the "good" they did today. Pathetic!

Happy National Beer Lovers Day to all who celebrate.

The date is tied to the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law) of 1516, which specified that beer could only be made with water, barley, and hops.

“You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline, it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but in the very least you need a beer.”
― Frank Zappa

The earliest alcoholic beverage, a mead-like mix of rice, honey, and fruit, was brewed by the Chinese around 7000 BCE, and evidence of the first barley beer comes from the Sumerians of Mesopotamia, where pottery with beer residue has been found. The "Hymn to Ninkasi," a Sumerian poem from about 1800 BCE, describes a recipe for a beer made from barley bread. The oldest chemical evidence of fermented grain, a beer-like gruel consumed by Natufian people in Israel, dates back 13,000 years, suggesting intentional brewing even before the development of agriculture.

Early beer was likely an accidental discovery, formed when grain-based gruel, left exposed to wild yeasts, fermented into an alcoholic beverage, but the 13,000-year-old Natufian beer shows that deliberate brewing predates agriculture, a key part of the controlled process of brewing today. Brewing required soaking grains, a process known as malting, then drying, and grinding them into a coarse powder before being mixed with water.

Beer was a fundamental part of daily life in Mesopotamia and Egypt, seen as a gift from the gods, and even used as daily rations and as payment for labor. It spread from the Middle East and Mesopotamia to Ancient Egypt and across the Mediterranean and Europe. During the Middle Ages, European monasteries became centers of brewing. Hops, which reduce spoilage and improve beer, were introduced to Germany in the 11th century and then spread to other parts of Europe. The use of lager yeast, which causes yeast to sink, became popular and led to a style of beer called "lager" (from the German word for "to store").

Sept 9, 1988: DEFENSE PLAY, a Monte Markham joint release. It’s time for more high school kids with computer-tech skills!

Now, if the film’s "Ancient Future" backwash to teen-tech romps WarGames and The Manhattan Project, and the presence of Monte Markham (as the military dad who heads the top secret shenanigans), doesn’t stir the cockles of your mainframe, this is the movie that answers the question: "Whatever happened to Boof from Teen Wolf?"

The "David Lightman" for this go-around-the-mainframe is Scott Denton (David Oliver from Night of the Creeps; passed away at 30 in 1992), just another one of those 30-year-old high school students with a knack for computers. He’s the project’s team leader alongside Karen Vandemeer (Susan “Boof” Ursitti).

This time, instead of the U.S. Air Force firing up the WOPR, they’re firing up a (stock footage) Saturn V (in 1988, no less, although the shuttle program was in full swing) from Vandenberg AFB topped with a top secret (and aren’t they all) satellite.

What’s the Airwolf doing here? Blue Thunder? Nope, it’s just a drone.

If you’re into the nostalgia of Apple IIs, dot-matrix printers, and dial-up modems running those drone forefathers, then enjoy the show. While this received a limited theatrical release and ended up on VHS, it’s never been — and more than likely never will be — released on DVD. Amazingly, there’s a VHS rip to watch on YouTube.

Caveat Mainframe: Director Ulli Lommel (Blank Generation, The Boogeyman), never one to not cheap-jack the films of others, has his own WarGames brat with a high-tech mini-copter that came out in 1987 as I.F.O. – Identified Flying Object — that was reissued to video as Defense Play.

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe (ex-Russia): 233,030 sq mi (~600,000 km²) with an estmated population of 32.8 million.

Venezuela is 50% larger than Ukraine: 353,841 sq mi (~900,000 km²) with an estimated 29 million people.

Eureka! The US southwest changed significantly on Sept 9, 1850. With the Compromise of 1850, the State of California was admitted to the US as a free, non-slavery state, the 31st US State, with its capital initially set at San Jose.

The Greek word "Eureka" has appeared on the state seal since 1849, when California sought statehood, and means "I Have Found It."

The words were probably intended to refer to the discovery of gold in California.

Archimedes, the famed Greek mathematician, is said to have exclaimed "Eureka" when, after long study, he discovered a method of determining the purity of gold.

In 1957, attempts were made to establish "In God We Trust" as the state motto,  but "Eureka" was made the official state motto in 1963.

The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion. In 1849 California requested permission to enter the Union as a free state, potentially upsetting the balance between the free and slave states in the U.S. Senate. Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on January 29, 1850, in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. Furthermore, California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. In addition, an act was passed settling a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico that also established a territorial government in New Mexico.

His overall view is worth considering today, given what is happening in the United States. The telltale signs of entering a "time of troubles" are the attempts to escape it by returning to a perceived past time of "greatness" and a leap into the future (AI, technocracy, etc.)

From 1918 to 1950, Toynbee was considered a leading specialist on international affairs; from 1929 to 1956 he was the Director of Studies at Chatham House, in which he also produced 34 volumes of the Survey of International Affairs, a "bible" for international specialists in Britain.

While today's tragedy evokes all manner of thoughts and emotions,
I have to wonder what is so big, somewhere-else, that we are not supposed to see.

Charlie Kirk's gifts were endearing, to many, and 'insane' to others...but, a 'big' assassination...placed on him...when school shootings, Ukrainian immigrant's stabbing, IDF taking out opponents in Qatar...?, It's like a symphony that keeps your hairs standing on end...needing the next 'fix'.

Will Charlie Kirk be old news...by Saturday...or Sunday?

RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 09-12-2025

Minstrel - thanks for your comment! Been thinking the same today. It's been a cacophony of alarm bells world wide for 2025. Is it all a random series of tragic events or is it orchestrated and every violent one is connected with a random one thrown in every so often to keep everyone distracted, confused & guessing? I don't know but I think we are witnessing a paradigm shift of the Old World is dying as the New World struggles to be born. Will probably get worse before things start turning around for the better. The West it seems is dying from ideological fundamentalism. Huge challenge to overcome.

What we know about Charlie Kirk's suspected assassin

Imagine that, calling everyone you disagree with a fascist, seems to radicalize people. Yet ironically, HE was the fascist.

Matt Robinson, a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriffs Department, encouraged his son to turn himself in after he confessed to the killing, but he refused at first. His father then reached out for help from a youth pastor, who helped Robinson turn himself in to police.

Supposedly, this is the rifle the cops found in nearby woods. In the video showing the alleged shooter jumping down from the roof to the ground, it appears he does not have it with him or he first disassembled the rifle before leaving his perch.?

So, where's the gun he allegedly tossed into the woods? It was found in one piece, right? Why would he disassemble it on the roof and then reassemble it in the woods? Why not just leave it on the roof if he was going to just toss it in the woods? He Panicked?

I don't know anything about a Mauser model 98 .30-06 rifle or the M1996, but can that rifle be disassembled that quickly?

General consensus on the Gen Z culture meanings:
First one, which was on the fired casing, is a copypasta parodying  transgender/furry culture memes.
Second is probably a reference to the calldown code for the 500kg bomb in the multiplayer online game Helldivers 2.
Third seems to be referring to "Bella ciao," an Italian song dedicated to anti-Nazi partisans. Fourth just a troll joke.

Bella Ciao was definitely not on my bingo card for 2025.

Once again, 22 years old. Notice how many of these delusional shooters are post 9/11 babies programmed by death cult memes (Discord, 4chan, Reddit, X, Fakebook, etc.) and brain rot mass media - and our twisted educational system.

From crazy twisted meme culture wars I learned today or rather became aware of is the "Groyper War" (followers of influencer Nick Fuentes) where Nick declared Charlie Kirk for being insufficiently right wing; it appears that Tyler Robinson may have been a Groyper.

Oxford words of the year:

2017: Youthquake ("a significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people," originally coined in the 1960s by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to describe sudden shifts in fashion and music.)

2018: Toxic

2019: Climate emergency (drove people into lunacy)

2020: Oxford did not choose a single word because the English language lacked any single word to describe it.

2021: Vax

2022: Goblin mode - chosen by the public through a vote for the first time in Oxford history. The term describes a type of unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, or greedy behavior that rejects social norms and expectations.

2023: Rizz - slang term that is a shortened form of "charisma" and refers to a person's style, charm, or attractiveness.

2024: Brain rot - chosen for its reflection of the perceived negative impacts of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, specifically on social media. The phrase dates back to Henry David Thoreau, its usage had a massive surge in 2024.

A personal fav for 2024 was the Macquarie Dictionary in Australia for 2024 chose "Enshittification" which describes the process of online platforms degrading their quality and user experience to increase profits, a concept popularized by Cory Doctorow.

2025: Not yet chosen. One candidate is Domestic Gladio.

In her 2013 memoir, Shirley Jones describes in great detail Jack Cassidy's 1974 breakdown in Las Vegas before one of their musical shows. At the time, Cassidy was also filming his role as Miles Mellough in Clint Eastwood's THE EIGER SANCTION (1975). Shirley Mae Jones (born March 31, 1934) played the lead role of Shirley Partridge, the widowed mother of five children, in the musical situation-comedy tv series The Partridge Family (1970–1974), which co-starred her real-life stepson, teen idol David Cassidy, son of Jack Cassidy.

On December 11, 1976, Cassidy invited his ex-wife, Shirley Jones, to his home, an apartment in West Hollywood, California, for drinks, but she declined. Early the next morning, Cassidy lit a cigarette and fell asleep on his Naugahyde couch. Asleep, he dropped the cigarette, igniting the couch. His charred body was found near the front door of the apartment among the ashes, and was identified as Jack Cassidy by dental records and a gold signet ring that he always wore, bearing the Cassidy family crest. His remains were cremated and scattered in the Pacific Ocean.

VIDEO description:
Quote:Aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky’s decades-long dream of building a helicopter finally paid off in 1938, when he convinced the United Aircraft executives to let him develop a machine that would revolutionize the aviation industry.

Then, as Sikorsky’s newest creation lifted off the ground vertically and with him inside it, the VS-300 became America's first practical and amphibious helicopter. The experimental machine was also the first helicopter to use a single vertical-plane tail rotor configuration for anti-torque successfully.

But it was when the helicopter broke a long-held record by the Germans that the world really paid attention, setting the stage for the development of larger and better helicopters born out of the passion and perseverance of one man…

Sept 14, 1976: the engines on an F-14 Tomcat malfunctioned and caused the fighter to skid off the deck of USS John F. Kennedy near Scotland. The crew safely ejected but the jet plunged to a depth of 1850 feet. With the Soviets trawling the ocean floor with fishing nets in an attempt to scoop up the Tomcat and its AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, the Navy launched an intensive search using the NR-1 research submarine. The Navy was able to recover the plane and all its missiles two months later.

The loss of the F-14 on Sept 14 was not the end of the John F. Kennedy's bad day. The carrier was later that same day involved in a collision with USS Bordelon (DD-881) that snapped the destroyer's main mast. The damage to the superstructure resulted in the decision to decommission the Bordelon.

Earl Brothers opened the 550 seat Boulder Theatre in 1932 in Boulder City, NV to provide entertainment to Boulder Dam workers. UNLV Digital Collections has a photo of the theatre from Sept 15, 1932, apparently showing a movie called American Madness (1932) about a socially-conscious banker Thomas Dickson who faces a crisis when his protégé is wrongly accused of robbing the bank, gossip of the robbery starts a bank run, and evidence suggests Dickson's wife had an affair...all on the same day.

The film was originally entitled "Bank Story" and was intended to quell American discontent over the alleged misbehavior of banks during the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Both bankers and censors claimed the film did more to improve the image of banks than a thousand newspaper articles.

Duncan Knowles, a former Bank of America historian states, "Frank Capra definitely told us, and the entire National Italian American Association, that when he made the move American Madness, he based the banker character on A. P. Giannini, that is fact." Giannini was the founder of the Bank of America.

Nixon military aide Brig. Gen. James D. Hughes [1922-2024] "loses his hat," but hangs on to the nuclear football. Associated Press, Jan 23, 1971.

In 1957, Hughes was selected as Military Aide to Vice President Richard Nixon. He was with the Vice President during the Caracas crisis in 1958 and on scene at the American Exhibition in Moscow when he faced off with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in what became famously known as the “Kitchen Debate.”

From 1969 to 1972, General Hughes served as Military Assistant to President Nixon, overseeing 2,000 people directly, and in charge of Air Force One, special missions, helicopters, ceremonies, protocol, the White House Communications Agency and Camp David.

He flew 101 combat missions during the Korean War. He died January 12, 2024 at age 101.

Lt General Hughes was awarded pilot wings from the Republic of Korea Air Force, Taiwan Air Force, Republic of the Philippines Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force.

From Colonel to 3-star general, he went up the ranks rather quickly.

General Hughes was a loyal friend to the Nixon family throughout his long life and active with the Richard Nixon Foundation. In 2011, Hughes delivered the keynote address at the commemoration of Richard Nixon’s 98th birthday.

Quote:“When I finished my combat tour, I had flown 101 combat missions, but there’s one I’ll never forget,” Hughes said. “We had a large communist convoy that was bottled up, and the first and last vehicles were burning so we worked on the middle.”

Hughes engaged the convoy multiple times to gain mission success.

“I picked a tank, went in and missed with the first rockets I fired,” Hughes recounted. “I went around and came back down the same flightpath after the same target.”

Hughes explained how his basic mistake as a young pilot caused him to take a hit from enemies on the ground.

“I was nailed by a 37-millimeter and the forward part; it shot out the windscreen and gave me a face full of glass,” Hughes said. “Noisy ride home – got the airplane back and flew the next day.”

Hughes was awarded the Purple Heart for the wounds he received in combat that day.

“Youthful exuberance and inexperience led me to qualify for the Medal,” Hughes said. “Wearing the medal was a constant reminder of how lucky I was.”

After retirement, with a deep understanding of the importance and meaning of the Purple Heart to veterans and their families, Hughes and three colleagues formed the Genesis Group to champion the cause for the recognition of Purple Heart recipients. In 2006, their efforts were realized when the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor was established in New Windsor, New York.

According to Hughes, one of the most meaningful military awards he received was the Order of the Sword, which is the highest award given by NCOs.

“Thirty-nine years of military service is a long time, but it went by awfully fast,” Hughes said. “Where else can anyone serve the country, in so honorable a profession, and in the company of some of the most able and dedicated men and women our country has to offer? So yes! I’d do it all again — in a minute!”

Korean War Veteran, former PACAF commander, shares his experiences to empower Airmen

Order of the Sword comes from 1522 in Sweden and was supposedly passed to the United States during the Revolutionary War and supposedly it lay dormant (no evidence of any of that) until it was reinstituted in its current form in 1967 to the US Air Force. The honor is awarded by non-commission officers to high level command overachievers Officers and many are associated with aerospace.

One of these Swordsmen was Caspar Willard "Cap" Weinberger [GBE], who became the Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan.

Document found at the Nixon Library. An October 10, 1971 memo from Nixon's military aide Col. James D. Hughes to White House Assistant Dwight Chapin recommending that the COG briefing be conducted in the White House Bomb Shelter. The briefing was held on Nov 11, 1969 in the Cabinet Room.

There's no place like home. The bomb shelter was still there as of a 1996 retrospective article in which Marguerite Stufflebeam [1917-1997] revealed the space was eventually used for storage. No bugs, but "Lizards seemed to like it," she said.

This photo is reminiscent of me when I was 10-11 years old. I was obsessed with digging out my own bomb shelter.

Growing up just a few miles from an arsenal of nuclear bombs with daily flybys of B-52s probably had something to do with it plus my dad had everything from gas masks, geiger counters, and iodine. So, one summer in my backyard beyond some trees & bushes where mom couldn't see me I started digging. Spent several days and got down to 8-9 feet when mom started wondering how I get so dirty and had to wash my clothes separately. Well, one day she made an unexpected discovery and totally freaked out. When dad got home from work he heard an earful for a good 20 minutes. Afterward dad ordered me to fill in the hole.

Depressed and angry, gave mom the silent treatment for a week and then I got a light bulb moment. Grandpa can help me! My grandparents lived just down below us and they owned all the land around us, 30-40 acres worth. Grandpa was a heavy equipment operator and had everything from dump trucks, bull dozers and back hoes. I convinced him to help me and later that summer we built a small bomb shelter out of concrete, rebar, cinder blocks, and timber. The ceiling height was about 6 feet, space was about 8' x 10' and 1 foot thick ceiling of concrete & rebar and about 14 feet of earth above. It was awesome and even mom was impressed. Dad said nice work, but it is not going to save you if SHTF. I disagreed at the time.

Later remarking to mom, why is it that every other boy around here has tree forts and ABOVE ground hideaways except for my son who has a weird fetish for bomb shelters which I thought died out back in the 60s?? The following summer my dad decided he would help furnish the underground boy cave with bunk beds, some shelves & table. Actually, a lot of shelves. Afterall, at the time he was a carpenter so why not. Unbeknownst to me at the time he had other plans for the underground facility. It would become a food storage cellar for all the family canning of garden produce + homemade jams & wine. Least I won't go hungry. Those were the days!

Don't wait for someone else to shovel you out of the shit. Act today!

The remains of one of the last U.S. Navy pilots killed during WWII finally have been interred in his home state of Michigan. ENS Eugene Mandeberg was reported MIA on 15 August 1945 when his Hellcat did not return to USS Yorktown. An investigation determined that Mandeberg was shot down over Yokohama in the final dogfight of the war a few hours after Japan surrendered. Remains of a pilot buried at a Buddhist temple and then recovered in 1946 were believed to belong to Mandeberg but it was not until earlier this year that scientific analysis provided positive identification. Mandeberg was laid to rest Sept. 14, 2025 at Beth El Memorial Park in Livonia, Michigan. Welcome home sailor.

Like clockwork, a few weeks ago, Trump extended the 9/11 state of emergency that started under Bush II. This grants the president all kinds of powers that we don't even know about. While Congress is legally required to review these, they have never done so. You ever think about how from the late 70's onward the top planners of Continuity of Government were Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, and right after they get into office, 9/11 somehow happens, causing COG plans to be activated for the first time (because back in the late 80s they modified the COG plans to include any emergency, not just nuclear war), and how we're all still in that state of emergency today?

BREAKING: TikTok US Deal Finalized

Oracle, Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz will control TikTok’s US operations under a new 80/20 framework with ByteDance.

• 80% US-owned (Oracle + Silver Lake + A16z + legacy investors)
• 20% Chinese-owned (ByteDance keeps a slice)
• American board with US government oversight
• New US-only app with separate algorithm from global TikTok

The Bottom Line:
This isn’t just a sale, it’s a complete rebuild. US users will download a new app that looks identical to current TikTok but runs entirely on American infrastructure (Oracle) with US-controlled algorithms. This means U.S. user data and the For You feed are separate from the global app everyone else uses. ByteDance licenses their technology but loses operational control. The result: TikTok survives, creators keep audiences, Washington gets data control. Reportedly 170 million US users, but I'm not one of them. Have fun with that.

TikTok lives: US, China in deal for app to keep operating in US

A question that I'm sure many are thinking is, what happens to businesses outside of the US who are specifically targeting people in the US on TikTok? Is it now even more impossible to try and grow a US-based audience from outside of the US? I know many in Europe and Australia where the main market is in America. So does that mean those businesses are not allowed to access the US audience anymore on TikTok? Must seek approval from daddy? Post anything negative toward Israel or really anything negative on the establishment and they'll ban your account, 3 strikes and they freeze your bank account. But, they'll probably give a lot of latitude at least for awhile because the machine needs to be fed.

For now the whole thing is still pending, final regulatory approvals (from CFIUS and any necessary Beijing approvals for exporting the algorithm or IP) and an official timeline for the cutover. Until these are finalized, details may change.

USGOV is taking control/a stake in big corporations like Intel, US steel, Lockheed and now TikTok.

Sept 17, 1787: The oldest and shortest written constitution in the world was signed 238 years ago by 39 of the 55 delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. As president of the Convention, George Washington was first to sign the document.

With their signatures, the Founding Fathers laid the foundation for the most prosperous and free nation in history - the United States of America.

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." – John Adams

“The fabric of American empire ought to rest on the solid basis of THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE.”  – Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Paper No. 22

Quote:James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, also kept brief notes of what happened on September 17, 1787.

“Dr. Franklin put a paper into Mr. Wilson’s hand to read containing his reasons for assenting to the constitution. It was plain, insinuating, persuasive-and in any event of the system guarded the Doctors fame,” he wrote.

After the meeting concluded, McHenry noted, “A lady asked Dr. Franklin, ‘Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy?’ A republic, replied the Doctor, if you can keep it.”

Constitution Daily Blog

The purpose of the observance week is to promote study and education about the United States Constitution which was originally adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation on September 17, 1787. Specifically, the Daughter's of the American Revolution state the purpose as:

- Emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
- Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
- Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

Iowa schools first recognized Constitution Day in 1911. In 1917, the Sons of the American Revolution formed a committee to promote Constitution Day. The committee included members such as Calvin Coolidge, John D. Rockefeller, and General John Pershing.

Gray Gordon And His Tic-Toc Rhythm – I Am An American (Shout Wherever You May Be); released on Bluebird Records in June 1940. Arthur Pine had the song introduced on NBC, Mutual, & ABC radio, arranged for an "I Am an American Day" at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

In 1940, Congress designated the third Sunday in May as I Am an American Day. The holiday was promoted through the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. A 16-minute film, I Am an American, was featured in American theaters as a short feature. In 1947 Hearst Newsreels featured the event on News of the Day. By 1949, governors of all 48 states had issued Constitution Day proclamations. On February 29, 1952, Congress moved the "I am an American Day" observation to September 17 and renamed it "Citizenship Day".

Constitution Week runs annually from September 17 — proclaimed as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day in the United States — through September 23. Constitution Week was officially enacted on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower from a congressional resolution petitioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The tradition of issuing a Presidential Proclamation designating Constitution Week continues to this day.

Sept 17, 1862: American Civil War: George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac halts the first invasion of the North by Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia in the single-day Battle of Antietam.

Dawn approached slowly through the fog on September 17, 1862. As soldiers tried to wipe away the dampness, cannons began to roar and sheets of flame burst forth from hundreds of rifles, opening a twelve hour tempest that swept across the rolling farm fields in western Maryland. A clash between North and South that changed the course of the Civil War, helped free over four million Americans, devastated Sharpsburg, and still ranks as the bloodiest one-day battle in American history with a tally of 22,727 dead, wounded, or missing on both sides.

Tragedy struck on same day in Sept 17, 1862, the Allegheny Arsenal explosion in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania results in the single largest civilian disaster during the war.

By the time the fire was put out, the lab had been reduced to a pile of smoldering rubble. Seventy-eight workers, mostly young women, were killed. Fifty-four bodies were unidentified, and were buried in a mass grave in the nearby Allegheny Cemetery. Among those killed were 15-year-old munitions assembler Catherine Burkhart, and 17-year-old Margaret Turney.

Excerpt from The Tragedy at Allegheny Arsenal - "A Horrid Moment of a Most Wicked Rebellion":

Quote:Ten days after the burial of the unknown dead, Reverend Richard Lea of the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church, an eyewitness to the violence of September 17, delivered a moving sermon to his congregation. Just as many families in the local community had been left with empty chairs in the home, the church pews there were vacant of three parishioners. Reverend Lea recalled the horrors of that day as if he were still there, hearing the cries of anguished victims and “conversing with so many dying persons in so short a space of time,” which left “a deep impression” on the elderly Lea. Many of the sights Lea encountered, however, were human remains that were “a short time before… life and beauty.” He pondered, in a foreboding tone, about the late devastation and its place within the larger national tragedy, “Who could foretell what the firing of the first gun at Fort Sumter would bring about? It brought about remotely, the catastrophe of Wednesday. And who can tell what more it may bring?

Allegheny Arsenal 1862 Explosion

Quote:The western half of the arsenal remained in use through World War I but eventually became obsolete. It was sold to the H. J. Heinz Company in 1926 and subsequently used for various industrial and commercial purposes. The arsenal's former main gate was demolished in 1947 to make more room for delivery trucks, though it remained as a pile of rubble until the site was cleared for a new supermarket in 1961. Most of the western half of the arsenal site is now occupied by the Arsenal 201 condominium complex. Construction crews working on the condominiums uncovered caches of Civil-War-era cannonballs in 2017 and again in 2020.

Addon from yesterday's Twilight Zone post... "Creepy." Elizabeth Montgomery on making the TWILIGHT ZONE episode TWO. From a 1961 newspaper story.

Sept 17, 1978: "By your command!" Battlestar Galactica sci-fi ABC-tv series created by Glen A. Larson premiered.

Opening Credit Announcer: "There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe... with tribes of humans... who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians... or the Toltecs... or the Mayans. Some believe there may yet be brothers of man... who even now fight to survive - somewhere beyond the heavens!"

"After the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind, the last major fighter carrier leads a makeshift fugitive fleet on a desperate search for the legendary planet Earth."

The 3-hour premiere was interrupted partway through by the announcement of the Camp David peace accords, a pair of political agreements signed by Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin.

The story was a complete rewrite, by Glen A. Larson, of a pilot he initially called "Adam's Ark", in which Earth was destroyed and the survivors shipped out into space. The Twelve Colonies of Kobol are all named after the signs of the Zodiac, and "Kobol" is a re-working of "Kolob", a star or planet from Mormon holy writings. Naturally, Mormon religion is quite evident in the series. Larson had developed this under the tutelage of Gene L. Coon, one of Star Trek (1966) most highly successful writers, created the Klingons for Star Trek and was the first to introduce the Star Trek Prime Directive, in the Star Trek The Original Series episode "The Return of the Archons". At over $1 million per Battlestar episode, much of that went to special effects, which were reused quite frequently.

The helmets of Colonial warriors were inspired by the headdresses of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. For Galactica pilots, they also featured a bird motif, a quiet homage to Star Trek (1966) creator Gene Roddenberry, who was nicknamed by cast and crew "the Great Bird of the Galaxy".

Glen A. Larson claimed that the series was in the works long before Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), when a lawsuit was filed against him by 20th Century-Fox and George Lucas. However, Larson has a long history of copycatting successful films and making small screen "knock offs" of them. The writer Harlan Ellison even gave him the nickname "Glen A. Larceny" for the way in which he shamelessly stole ideas. The case was eventually settled out of court in 1983.

The synthesized robotic-sounding voices of the Cylon centurions were done by Michael Santiago using the EMS Vocoder 2000. This device has become extremely difficult to find and very expensive.

The British Electronic Music Studios (EMS) Vocoder 2000 designed by Tim Orr is a signal processing device, which takes two input signals and produces one output. These two signals are known as the 'speech' and the 'excitation'. The output from the Vocoder is a signal which contains a proportion of the harmonic structure of the excitation and the forrnant structure (the articulation) of the speech. Thus it is possible to make normally inarticulate sounds speak. For instance, if you were to take speech and an organ, it would be possible to make a 'talking organ'. Here's a Demo track of the EMS 2000 Vocoder if you want to hear the synthesized robotic sound.

Sept 17, 1987: CDR Philip Voss set a record for the longest flight of a carrier aircraft by flying an S-3 Viking 4,002 miles in 13 hours during Operation Goldenrod. Younis had been captured on a yacht in international waters by undercover FBI agents who were working under new antiterrorism laws.
