Dewayne and the Beldettas - 727Sky - 08-29-2025

This is the last band I played in before I went into the military. I played lead guitar and  even Baritone saxophone occasionally. Vietnam killed the band as we all went off to do our patriotic duty. Yes I think I might have posted this before without the story of who went where.

Dewayne became a cop in Norman, Oklahoma and died several years ago. Our Organ player Doctor Jim Falkner as of the last time I saw him was still teaching music theory at O.U. (Oklahoma, University) ... Mark our bass player who had played in other bands with me ended up owning a big lumber yard along with a few satellite yards in different cities.

This was recorded in the late 60s with a different guitar player/ or before my time with the Beldettas.. I think I would have done a few different licks for the song hahahahah

I played a year with James Mobly and the Shades of Soul... James went on to record at Motown as far as I know. We won the Battle of the Bands In Tulsa, Okla. and did a T.V. show for Danny Kaye and the Scene in Okla. City as a reward. James had one hell of a voice especially when he went into falsetto... This recording was done in an auditorium with a cheap recorder and maybe 300 people in attendance. First time we had played at the academy as far as a formal setting.  My parents and girl friend Mary were there... Once the academy realized we could actually play coupled with James being a black man and all of us white we got to travel and play at different events  showing how inclusive the academy was etc etc.

The first band we formed was called the Nightwalkers out of Purcell, Okla. but I can not find any recording or videos of our work.. We were together until our lead singer/Saxophone player "Lee" had to enter the service.

We played many of these songs. "Blue laws " in the so called " Bible Belt " were still in effect meaning almost all businesses had to remain closed on Sunday as a sign of religious obedience in most cities. Religious or just plain control freaks knew what was best for everyone; short burr hair cuts were the in thing until the Beatles came along .

I do believe in the 60s and 70s was a time the NSA and CIA were both in full blown control and propaganda ..

The Baptist preacher's daughter who was not allowed to date, dance, or go with anyone until she was 16, promptly got pregnant ... She was to stupid to know it could happen to her,,,,,I guess ??????/

I felt sorry for her and her family. The Baptist preacher and family left town and the Methodist Preacher opened a community center to go to after the foot ball games;  that is where we " The Night Walkers " got our chance to play every Friday night.
