I have been on 'party lines' as late as the early 1970's (at least) in far (at the time) east Houston.
Now, they have Zoom meetings.
But, the subject of this is about another kind of 'party lines'.

I hear the wails and clamoring (as I am one to moan, as well) over the despicable results of recent elections (USA)...and have heard that the reason/s for such outcomes were due to everything from God's wrath to a need for adopting the socio-economic principles of 'National Socialists' (presumably, of 1930's & '40's Germany).
It seems that many of the explanations have valid points...but, I have wondered for decades, why 'the Right' continue to call for & support such weak and slimy candidates.
Mitt Romney, McCain, Cheney, Dole, Bush(es)...et al.
Who'd they have in NYC
(when the most conservative alternative was Cuomo)?
"Do you tout the party lines?"
"Are you a good Republican?"
"Have you paid your dues, and given homage to whom/where it belongs?"
"What is your lineage?"
"How will you pay for your campaign?"
"How long have you been serving...the party?"
What a sickening lot.
What a sickening way of determining 'who' runs your government.
"You gotta pick a side."
Really?
Gotta pick a side of the bad potato?
They Did Not want Trump...all 3 times. He's not a member of the pack.
The only reason they 'backed' him, the third time, was - after the second time, that they couldn't raise money without him.
If the candidates are professional politicians (in craft), they should be weaned away.
If they are not 'Of The People', they are 'Of' another influence...and for a uniting of The States, we need 'Of The People'.
...
Just, adding thoughts to the mix.

The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.
