The Soviet Night Witches of WWII

Quote:What was one the most horrifying sounds a German soldier on the Russian front could hear in the dead of night – a sound that would turn his heart to jelly? The soft “whooshing” of the wind off the struts of a “Night Witch” jerry-rigged biplane bomber; described as the eerie sound of a witch’s broom as it quietly glided in to drop its payload of bombs.

Who were these Night Witches? They were the all-women pilots of Russia’s 588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment. In World War II, American women such as the WASPs supported the war by ferrying and testing planes.  But the Night Witches were the first women military pilots in the 20th century to directly engage an enemy in combat. The pilots weren’t the only women in the 588th. All the members of the 588th were women, including the navigators, ground crews, and support staff.

The Night Witches were organized by Major Marina Raskova, who was essentially Russia’s equivalent to our Amelia Earhart. Women pilots, though, weren’t unusual in the Soviet Union. Flying was popular in the 1930s and thousands of women belonged to flying clubs. But when Germany invaded Russia in 1941, Russian women weren’t allowed in the Soviet Air Force even though they were allowed on the front lines in the army. Raskova received a slew of letters from women protesting the prohibition. After all, if women were allowed to fight alongside men on the ground, why not in the air too?

Joseph Stalin was one of Raskova’s admirers. She showed him the letters and convinced him to have the Soviet Air Force accept women as combat pilots. Women rushed to enlist. Some were integrated into regiments to fight alongside male pilots.

Stalin also authorized the creation of three all-women fighting groups:

    586th Fighter Aviation Regiment
    587th Bomber Aviation Regiment
    588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment

Thousands of women enlisted. Around 400 were accepted for each regiment. Most were university students in their late teens to mid-twenties. They spent an intensive year training, learning not just how to fly, but to navigate and maintain the aircraft too – training that normally took several years to complete.

Nov 6, 2025: Paul Ignatius passed away today at the age of 104. Ignatius served as Secretary of the Navy between 1967 and 1969 during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. During his time as Navy Secretary, Ignatius was the highest-ranking Armenian American in the United States government. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Paul Ignatius (DDG-117) is named in his honor.

In 1961, Ignatius began working at the Pentagon under U.S. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara. When he started his government career working with the John F. Kennedy administration, The New York Times noted in a 1967 article that both Ignatius and McNamara "demonstrate a certain coolness under fire, a grasp of small details in large, complicated problem areas, and an ability to organize and manage a staff effectively". Since he lived to a ripe old age of 104 I'll assume he ate stress for breakfast.

After government service, Ignatius served as president of The Washington Post newspaper and served as executive vice president of The Washington Post Company from 1969 until 1971. During his time with WaPo, Ignatius reluctantly oversaw the release of the Pentagon Papers.

It appears the FBI is going after Archive.Today:

Quote:The site, which is known by both archive.today, archive.is, or any number of other mirrors, started in the early 2010s but rose to prominence during the GamerGate movement.

Very little is known about the person or people who work on archive.today, though there have been numerous attempts to identify the webmasters. The most interesting is this article on a site called Gyrovague, whose crawling through various archive.today blogs and web presences suggests “it’s a one-person labor of love, operated by a Russian of considerable talent and access to Europe.”

A FAQ page, which has not been updated since 2013, states the site “is privately funded; there are no complex finances behind it.” A post on the site’s blog from 2021 says “it is doomed to die at any moment.” A post on the site’s blog from 2021 says “it is doomed to die at any moment.”

Nov 6, 2000: Lyon Sprague de Camp, American science fiction writer and non-fiction literature who coined the term "extraterrestrial" and "E.T." in May 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, dies in Plano, Texas. He was 92. Lyon moved to Plano in 1989. I moved to Plano in 1986 and left in 1988. A suburb of Dallas and back then it was a upper middle-class suburbia that was rapidly expanding.

During World War II, de Camp served as a researcher at the Philadelphia Naval Yard along with his fellow writers Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein. De Camp eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy as a reserve officer.

De Camp was a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America (SAGA), a loosely knit group of heroic fantasy writers that was founded during the 1960s and led by Linwood Vrooman Carter (pseudonyms: H. P. Lowcraft and Grail Undwin), with entry by credentials as a fantasy writer alone.

Sprague de Camp's first part of his two-part article  "Design for Life" (PDF)

Quote:During World War II, de Camp was recruited to work at the Naval Air Experimental Station in Philadelphia on the recommendation of author Robert Heinlein, who, working as a civilian engineer for the military, suggested that the Navy hire his fellow science fiction writers de Camp and Isaac Asimov for their technical expertise. De Camp accepted the offer and applied for a commission in the Navy Reserve. He attended training school at Dartmouth College [private Ivy League research university that dates back to 1769] in New Hampshire in July 1942 and was commissioned as a lieutenant. De Camp, Heinlein and Asimov all worked together in Philadelphia, designing and testing naval aircraft. De Camp left the Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander.

In his later years, de Camp wrote more fantasy than science fiction, completing and editing several “Conan the Barbarian” stories originally written by Robert E. Howard, who died in 1936. The Science Fiction Writers of America named him a “Grand Master” in 1979, and he received a World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement in 1984. He also received a Hugo Award, the highest prize in the field of science fiction, for his 1997 autobiography, “Time and Chance.”

Nov 7, 2000: Jean Hill, full name Norma Jean Lollis Hill was one of the closest eyewitnesses to the John F. Kennedy assassination known as “the lady in red” due to her distinctive coat, dies at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where President Kennedy was pronounced dead. She was 69. The same hospital where Kennedy's accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Oswald's killer Jack Ruby died.

Hill was less than 20 feet away from Kennedy when he was fatally shot. After the assassination, she became an outspoken advocate of the "grassy knoll second shooter" theory, and she claimed for the rest of her life that the government was covering up the truth. A teacher by profession, she was a consultant for Oliver Stone's 1991 film JFK and co-wrote JFK: The Last Dissenting Witness with Bill Sloan.

What a surprise: White House reporter with Washington Post says the man who fainted at White House yesterday was not a pharma exec but rather "an Eli Lilly patient, who had been invited to the White House based on his experience taking a GLP-1 drug." The report from yesterday via another White House reporter claiming the man who fainted was an exec named Gordon Findlay is still circulating. Meanwhile, as of this afternoon, AI, namely Grok still believes it was Gordon Findlay. You can tell mainstream media scrapes all their 'news' from X/twitter.

Leaked emails reportedly show that Jeffrey Epstein helped arrange talks between the Israeli government and Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast, that small country in West Africa that most Americans can't find on a map) that culminated in the signing of a formal defense agreement in 2014. Epstein made introductions and held meetings between Ivorian leaders and Israeli intelligence-linked firms and individuals that helped lay the groundwork for the deal that helped flood Cote d'Ivoire with Israeli surveillance tech.

This is the latest entry in a series of stories about Epstein's links to the intelligence world, including in Africa.

Jeffrey Epstein Helped Israel Sell a Surveillance State to Côte d’Ivoire (long article)

"Handala" is an Iran-linked hacker group.

Now, when I reminisce about NRO & NSA, Epstein is the first name that pops into my mind that just never seems to end and keeps getting darker & deeper into the global intelligence community abyss. I guess that Israeli passport the DOJ seized was real. Epstein is an enigma and will probably remain so for decades.

Nov 8, 1901: Gospel riots: Bloody clashes take place in Athens following the translation of the Gospels into demotic Greek.

In the aftermath of the violence, the Greek Orthodox Church reacted by banning any translation of the Bible into any form of modern demotic Greek, and by forbidding the employment of demoticist teachers, not just in Greece but anywhere in the Ottoman Empire.

The riots marked a turning-point in the history of the Greek language question, and the beginning of a long period of bitter antagonism between the Orthodox Church and the demoticist movement. The same will probably happen when someone decides to re-translate the Bible to any language Or rewrite the Bible using AI.

Drones & mystery lights in the sky back in the headlines...

UK deploying specialist RAF team to defend Belgium from 'rogue' drones

Who ever this group is (which the US mil/intel operators knows who) seems to have shifted from the US (New Jersey, Wright Patterson AFB and Langley) to Belgium. Otherwise, we have a mystery third actor on the world's stage. It's strange that these drones are untraceable, even while buzzing over nuclear bases according to our austere media & various military spokespersons just like Ursula von der Leyen's SMS messages over Pfizer. But, of course many EU leaders are blaming Russia, Russia, Russia.

We always hear reports of drones but never any identifiable proof or crash retrievals despite the billion$ spent on drone defense. Reports which historically have often been planes, planets, stars and even plasma orb anomalies. It's always about a spooky threat narrative that never materializes. Same as in Cold War 1.0 where we had heightened fears of Communism & UFOs. Same shit, different day.

Amazing how much faith they have in NATO, yet at same time they tell us NATO for whatever reasons cannot identify these "drones". I watched the first two episodes of Vince Gilligan's  Pluribus (AppleTV+) and wow, what a cooked up wild ride! Easy 5 stars, so far. First 2 episodes might be the most scathing piece about humanity and AI thus far. Gilligan's writing a post pandemic show where the virus is an allegory for AI that strips us of our autonomy, creativity, individuality, and replaces with a super hive mind modern day Borg.

Series tagline: "The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness."

Vince Gilligan if you don't know is the creator/writer/producer/director of Breaking Bad & writer/producer of 29 episodes (1995-2002) of The X-Files and co-writer of The Lone Gunmen.

So far it seems like a unique take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a reflection of Cold War–era fears of invasion and totalitarianism. Could Pluribus be a satire of America today...of social media and division?

A darkly comic dystopian nightmare that you're suddenly thrust into with no escape. My favorite character so far is Samba Shutte aka "Casanova Mac Boner"! So far this is the first TV series in a loooooong time I highly recommend.

Tucked away in the Pluribus credits, it reads, “This show was made by humans.”

“I hate AI,” creator Vince Gilligan told Variety with a chuckle. “AI is the world’s most expensive and energy-intensive plagiarism machine. I think there’s a very high possibility that this is all a bunch of horseshit. It’s basically a bunch of centibillionaires whose greatest life goal is to become the world’s first trillionaires. I think they’re selling a bag of vapor.”

Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn on What ‘Pluribus’ Is Really About (WARNING: contains spoilers for the first two episodes)

I think Vince Gilligan is a fan of or at least has a passing acquaintance with THE IMMORTAL TV series from 1969-71.

Screencaps right before the insane nightmare starts...

Happy 250th birthday, US Marines.

Nov 10, 1775: The United States Marine Corps is founded at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia by Samuel Nicholas. Who became the first officer commissioned in the nascent Continental Marines.

Quote:On the night of 11 September 1781, Continental Marine Major Samuel Nicholas departed Philadelphia for a secret mission to Boston with Tench Francis, a Philadelphia merchant who had been trying to dispel accusations of British loyalty since the start of the Revolutionary War. Less than a week earlier, French Admiral Comte de Grasse had defeated the British at the Battle of Virginia Capes, and General George Washington’s army had been marching toward Yorktown for the last two weeks. The war was nearing its climax.

As the first Marine officer, Nicholas set precedents and established milestones for the service, all of which led to his secret adventure. However, this mission would prove to be the most impactful of Nicholas’ Revolutionary War exploits.

On 10 November 1775, Congress resolved to establish the Continental Marines. More specifically, Congress decided “that two Battalions of marines be raised, consisting of one Colonel, two Lieutenant Colonels, two Majors, and other officers as usual in other regiments.” Before commissioning the enumerated field-grade ranks, Congress approached Nicholas, who had no prior military service, about a commission as Captain of Marines. He accepted—and became the first officer of the Continental Marines on 28 November 1775.

....

A Corps Legacy Is Born

Samuel Nicholas is commonly referred to as the first Commandant of the Marine Corps; however, the title did not exist until 1798. Regardless of labels, Nicholas was the senior officer of the Continental Marines throughout the war, led the ground combat element of the first amphibious raid conducted by the Navy and Marines, participated in the Navy’s first squadron attack, led the first Marine unit under an Army command, and held the equivalent of the first individual augment billet.

These are all important to the heritage and development of the U.S. Marine Corps, but perhaps more importantly, they prepared Nicholas for Robert Morris’ secret mission—which helped secure the financial backbone of the young nation.

America’s First Marine

November 10, 2025: a four-part docu series titled “MARINES” will be released on Netflix. The series provides an unprecedented, first-person narrative of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit during a deployment. The series offers an inside look at the demanding training and critical operations of America’s forward-deployed crisis response force in the Pacific. Probably a recruitment tactic for the coming new war in the Pacific.

November 10, 1865: Captain Henry Wirz, commander of the infamous Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia, was hanged in Washington, D.C., the only Confederate officer executed as a war criminal.

Quote:In November 1863, Confederate officials selected Andersonville as the site of a new prison which was needed to contain the growing number of prisoners. Prisoners began arriving at the hastily constructed Andersonville facility in late February 1864. On March 27, 1864, the Swiss-born Hartmann Heinrich Wirz was assigned to command the prison at Andersonville, which was given the name Camp Sumter. Planned for 10,000 prisoners, by August 1864, Andersonville, an open stockade, held more than 33,000 Union prisoners. Adequate shelter, edible food, potable water, and medical supplies were lacking, and the population was decimated by starvation and infectious disease. Nearly 13,000 of the more than 45,000 prisoners sent to Andersonville from its opening in 1864 until its capture in April 1865, died there.

Convinced by the evidence presented in an episode of the new Canadian made-for-TV documentary series Dive Detectives, airing on History Television Mar. 31, Gordon Lightfoot has changed the lyric of his 1976 hit, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, to remove the implication that human error played a part in the 1975 Lake Superior shipping tragedy in which 29 lives were lost.
...
The traditional verse goes: “When supper time came the old cook came on deck /Saying ‘Fellows it’s too rough to feed ya’ /At 7 p.m. a main hatchway caved in /He said, ‘Fellas it's been good to know ya.”

Lightfoot’s lyrics have now been changed to: “When supper time came the old cook came on deck /Saying ‘Fellows it’s too rough to feed ya’ /At 7 p.m. it grew dark, it was then/He said, ‘Fellas it's been good to know ya’,” Lightfoot’s spokesperson said.

Nov 11, 1750: The F.H.C. Society, also known as the Flat Hat Club, is formed at at the College of William & Mary and meeting place at Raleigh Tavern, Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the first college fraternity aka secret society aka social club and faded away after 1772. Thomas Jefferson was one of the 6 members for a few years (1760-62). The organization's initials likely stand for the Latin phrases "Fraternitas, Humanitas, et Cognitio" or "Fraternitas Humanitas Cognitioque" (two different renderings of "Brotherhood, Humanity, and Knowledge")

The F.H.C. brothers devised and employed a secret handshake, issued certificates of membership, and wore a silver membership medal. The front of the medal featured an F.H.C. monogram with the club's date of formation, November 11, 1750. The medal's back features the club's motto surrounding its coat of arms, consisting of a shield with a chevron and clasped hands; above the shield is a rose. Its motto is Stabilitas et Fiedes, Latin for "Stability and Faith".

The group had a revival in 1920, but died out after WWII started. Then another revival in 1972 adding more members and continues to this day under new name Phi Beta Kappa Society with very low profile due to apparent Greek organizations being shutdown across university campuses.

Bound into three exquisitely colored volumes, Fungi Collected in Shropshire and Other Neighbourhoods (1860–1902) features hundreds of species, collected across 42 years by a female British mycologist named M. F. Lewis. Collected from her home town of Ludlow, England, and other locations in England and Wales. She does not appear to have published any of her work, but she was known locally and is cited in the Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological and Natural History Society and the records of the British Mycological Society, among others.

Volumes One, Two, and Three of her work are hand bound in leather with gilded spines, and contain detailed watercolors of some three hundred species. Lewis’s field notes include scientific names, locations, and dates for each mushroom documented.

The Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University has the only copy of Lewis’s work, which was officially published in October 2023, a century and a half after Lewis completed it.

Nov 12, 1925: Italy agrees on a plan to repay its WWI debt to the U.S. under what are seen as highly generous terms. To satisfy an original indebtedness of $1.65 billion, Rome will give $2.1 billion over a period of 65 years, with a moratorium on interest the first five years and the first payment due in 1926 and the final one scheduled for 1987.

However, amid the Great Depression and failed international efforts like the 1932 Lausanne Conference to link war debt relief to German reparations, Italy made payments until 1933 but defaulted on its obligations to the US in June 1934. This default, prompted by economic hardship and no further relief, halted all repayments, and the debt remains unpaid today. The Johnson Debt Default Act of 1934 barred defaulting nations like Italy from US capital markets until 1940. I'm sure the USGOV got paid by other means plus the CIA rigged their election in 1948 so the Commies wouldn't take power.

An underrated part of the London tube is that each of the 272 stations has a plaque with a unique depiction of a penitential/meditative labyrinth, created by artist Mark Wallinger in 2013 thus explaining to tube riders that they are about to embark on a spiritual journey of self discovery by getting on the train!

Sound nutty?! Every time you get on a train you are confronted by a sign saying "You are here" and the 'here' in question is at the start of a winding and circuitous path toward enlightenment. Londoners can have little mystical experiences during their gloomy daily commutes. I'm sure those who ride the train often don't even give the labyrinth signs a second glimpse, but something new I learned today.

Quote:The Navy SEAL community lost a legend with the passing this September of Rear Admiral Thomas “The Hulk” Richards.

Richards was an inspiring leader—a warrior’s warrior, and an extraordinary Navy SEAL who was ready to risk all for his teammates. He did exactly that during a Viet Cong ambush on 30 January 1971. Then-Lieutenant (junior grade) Richards immediately took charge of his six-man SEAL patrol in a rice paddy in Vietnam’s Cà Mau Peninsula while under heavy fire. His platoon commander lay seriously wounded (shot in both legs), three of his six teammates were down hard, and a Viet Cong’s bullet had just ripped through his right hand as he held his Stoner light machine gun’s pistol grip. Richards led fearlessly, rallying his teammates against an enemy force that outnumbered them by 10 to 1.

Standing on top of a rice dike, he directed close-in fire support from a lone Seawolf helicopter gunship while completely exposed to enemy fire that had just wounded him. Then, with selfless disregard for his own life, and again completely exposed to enemy fire, he dragged all three of his wounded teammates out of the ambush “kill zone” and across the rice paddy to makeshift cover behind a dike.

He went back into the heavy fire to rescue each wounded SEAL, one after the other. He dragged each teammate for extraction to a Sealord helicopter that hovered, skids wet, over the rice paddy. With one arm, he lifted each wounded SEAL up to the crewman with his uninjured left hand. (We did not call him “The Hulk” back then for nothing.) All the while, enemy rounds hit the Sealord’s fuselage and splashed all around them in the rice paddy.

On that day a Navy SEAL legend was forged—a legend that stands as the embodiment of conspicuous gallantry under fire. Richards’ heroic actions that day define extraordinary heroism, all witnessed by the SEALs and Seawolves who were with him that day, fighting for their lives. His extraordinary heroism went above and beyond the call of duty and is still waiting to be officially and fully recognized by the Navy—even after more than 50 years and nine sworn, notarized, and submitted eyewitness accounts.

Three excerpts from two of those sworn statements, submitted by his wounded platoon commander and the Seawolf fire team leader providing critical fire support, describe Richards’ heroic actions as they witnessed them unfold:

Quote:“I used my hands to pull on rice plants to follow Tom and Rowland. As I got near Rowland, Tom was dragging Futrell across the N-S dike line with his good hand. Then he was on the radio. He was still completely out in the open, ignoring the now heavy fire that had already wounded him.”
—Excerpt from sworn witness statement on 18 March 2021 by Lieutenant Commander Grant Telfer, Zulu’s platoon commander, who was seriously wounded during the ambush.

Quote:“The helicopter was making an approach. . . . Tom Richards, still up and in the open, grabbed me again and dragged me over the north-south dike toward the helicopter. The next sight was beyond belief. One at a time, LTJG Richards, in the open, and with only one arm, lifted Futrell, then Rowland, up into the helicopter until the crewman could grab them and drag them in. Then Tom grabbed me and lifted me up. I was amazed at his strength.”]
—Excerpt from Telfer’s statement.

Quote:“I had a front row seat from 70 feet of altitude, almost directly on top of the SEAL squad. LTJG Richards’ large muscular frame made him easily distinguishable from the other SEALs. I saw him drag each of the wounded clear of the kill zone while he himself was wounded and under heavy fire. Zulu Platoon was outnumbered 10-1. LTJG Richards, without doubt, should have been awarded the Medal of Honor.”
—Commander Carl Nelson’s sworn witness statement on 1 June 2020.

Nelson was the Seawolf fire team leader in command of the lone UH-1B helicopter gunship and Sealord formation. He had already flown more than 600 combat missions at the time of the operation, including to support numerous SEAL operations, and he provided the only combat air support from his lone gunship during the Viet Cong ambush. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism during the engagement.

As one Congressman stated in his endorsement of an additional review by the Secretary of the Navy of Richards’ actions:

Quote:“The nine sworn eyewitness statements of the SEALs and Seawolves of Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three described the extraordinary heroism of Richards and the conspicuous gallantry of Lawrence as they desperately fought to save the lives of their severely wounded teammates during that Viet Cong ambush more than fifty years ago. These statements tell the story of extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty.”

Captain Slattery is a retired Navy SEAL. He was a teammate of Tom Richards in SEAL Team One.

Nov 13, 1833: “The Falling Stars”

Bible Readings for the Home Circle (1920), p. 420 of PDF.

Quote:It’s an ordinary night in November. You look up in the sky at around 10:30 pm and notice a few shooting stars. After you appreciate the pretty sight, you get ready for bed and tuck yourself in. Shortly after 3:00 am, you are awoken as your room fills with light. You can hear your neighbors outside shouting. As you rush outside, you’re met with a spectacular scene—the sky is lit up with hundreds of meteors, as if it’s raining fire. The barrage of lights persists until daybreak when the sunlight causes the meteors to fade from view. You can hardly believe what you saw, but you won’t soon forget it!

The Leonid meteor storm was seen across the United States in the night and early morning of November 12th and 13th, 1833. Those who were awake to witness the storm were in awe as between 50,000 and 150,000 meteors fell each hour. Denison Olmsted, a professor at Yale, wanted to know more about this phenomenon. However, he did not have much data to study aside from his own observations. As soon as the meteors began to disappear with the sunrise, Olmsted drafted a letter and sent it off to the New Haven Daily Herald, appealing to the public to send any information about the storm. This issue of the Daily Herald would be the catalyst for one of the first crowdsourced science projects—in which Olmsted used information from everyday people to help him make new discoveries about meteors.

“As the cause of ‘Falling Stars’ is not understood by meteorologists, it is desirable to collect all the facts attending this phenomenon, stated with as much precision as possible. The subscriber, therefore, requests to be informed of any particulars which were observed by others, respecting the time when it was first discovered, the position of the radiant point above mentioned, whether progressive or stationary, and of any other facts relative to the meteors.”
-Denison Olmsted’s appeal reprinted in the Richmond Enquirer, Nov 26, 1833.

[Early days of social media]

Newspapers at the time were usually subscribed to each other and upon receiving their copy of the New Haven Daily Herald, papers across the nation began reprinting Olmsted’s letter. In addition, local newspapers took their own interest in reporting on the meteor storm, publishing eyewitness accounts and opinions from scientific experts.

Olmsted’s letter in the paper worked, and he received responses from all over the country. He was successfully able to crowdsource information about the meteor storm based on the descriptions of everyday people. Olmsted read through these accounts and used them to draw new conclusions about meteors. Olmsted published his findings in an 1834 edition of the American Journal of Science and Arts. This project, and the sheer scope of the feedback Olmsted received, would not have been possible without the help of newspapers circulating his call for information.

How Newspapers Helped Crowdsource a Scientific Discovery: The 1833 Leonid Meteor Storm

This meteor shower is mentioned in Blood Meridian OR The Evening Redness in the West (1985) epic historical novel by American author Cormac McCarthy.

“Night of your birth. Thirty-three. The Leonids they were called. God how the stars did fall. I looked for blackness, holes in the heavens. The Dipper stove.”   Book plot

My top recommendation to anyone with a sincere interest in current American political (dys)function is the darkly funny and tragically prescient BOB ROBERTS (1992) by Directorial debut/writer & starring Tim Robbins. Much like IDIOCRACY after it, some of the film’s comedy now feels like a documentary, because we’re living it. Bonus: has actors Alan Rickman, Gore Vidal, Jack Black (feature film debut), John Cusack, Susan Sarandon, Fred Ward and Helen Hunt (cameo). Tim Robbins and his brother David, who co-wrote the songs in the film, are the sons of folk singer Gil Robbins of the Highwaymen, who also has cameos in the movie. Many are first time actors. Jack Black sings background vocals on the soundtrack.

Alan Rickman helped Tim Robbins fund the production of Bob Roberts with his own money.

Bob Roberts: The times they are a-changin' back.

Bob Roberts: [singing] Some people will have / Some simply will not / But they'll complain and complain and complain and complain and complain / Some people will work / Some never will / But they'll complain and complain and complain and complain and complain / Like this: / It's society's fault I don't have a job / It's society's fault I'm a slob / I'm a drunk, I don't have a brain / Give me a pamplet while I complain / Hey pal you're living in the land of the free No-one's gonna hand you opportunity.

Mrs. Davis: We all think you are wonderful and we just wish there was a way we could vote for you three times.
Bob Roberts: Well, there is.
Mrs. Davis: Really?
Bob Roberts: [after a pause, then laughs] Just kidding!

Zero proficiency schools are an interesting phenomenon. In Maryland's 2025 MCAP (Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program) results, 23 schools had zero students proficient in math, despite statewide funding rising 16%. There were another 15 schools where just one student tested proficient in math. Overall, 46 Maryland public schools had two or fewer total students test proficient in math.
Note: Montgomery county Maryland is one of The wealthiest counties in America.

Eighty Illinois schools don’t have a single student proficient in math, and 24 have no student proficient in reading, despite many schools spending more than the annual state average of $24,700 per pupil.

A Baltimore high school has had 0% math proficiency for four straight years (2021-2024), despite per-pupil funding more than doubling to $42,618 by 2024 (though this includes district-wide costs).

In an era where technology and mental skill are the key to everything, the educators are failing to educate. It's almost like they make things worse.

U.S. Department of Education, showed that 69% of Pennsylvania 8th grade students aren’t proficient at math, and an equal 69% cannot read at grade level, based on results on the NAEP.

Maybe not everything about the educational establishment is fake, but far too much of it is. The Ian Roberts fiasco is emblematic of the shambles that money can't fix.

The appeal of the syndicates is they charge 20 pounds a ton for waste disposal compared to the 100 to 300 pounds a ton for the official waste disposal. With a 5 or 15 to 1 cost advantage consumers will hire the syndicate.

Nov 15, 1962: Stranger Things - Extrasensory Perception Studied
"The Air Force has just completed a large scale, scientifically rigorous investigation of extrasensory perception-precognition, clairvoyance, telepathy & like reported phenomena."

Quote:The photos, taken in black and white as was typical in the early 1960s, don’t show the faces of the young women. Instead, we see their backs at a desk, the photos snapped in classified government secrecy to document a wild new experiment the U.S. Air Force was undertaking.

There is, however, one face in the photos—that of the VERITAC, a hulking gray machine with eyes that rotated and settled on random numbers and a smile of buttons marked zero through nine.

At first glance, you might think the young women were practicing their typing skills—only this was no typewriter, but a novel way to test for extrasensory perception, or ESP. Clairvoyance. Obtaining information through the powers of the mind.

For decades, this story lay hidden inside a plain manila envelope in the archives of the Diane M. Halle Library—photographs and newspaper clippings and typewritten missives that weave together an intriguing and little-known chapter of history involving the Cold War, paranoia, and supernatural powers.

And at the center of this story? The young women of Endicott Junior College.

At the heart of their work was the VERITAC—a boutique device manufactured in Gloucester and designed by Everette Dagle. By randomly generating numbers 0 through 9, the machine invited subjects to either predict each number, which would then be generated, or “the subject could attempt to, clairvoyantly or telepathically, determine which number had already been generated and displayed as a bright ‘target’ in another room,” according to an article in the Research Review, a publication out of AFCRL’s Office of Aerospace Research.

....

According to a Boston Globe article, Endicott was the site of the first government-sponsored ESP experiments, but it wasn’t the last. In 1978, the CIA quietly launched Project Star Gate, which picked up on the idea of leveraging psychic powers and remote viewing for espionage and military operations. The project ran through the mid-1990s and, in 2017, the CIA declassified information about the project.

There is still much more to this story … and the truth is out there.

Nov 15, 1970: Brain Researcher José Delgado Asks— ‘What Kind of Humans Would We Like to Construct?’

“The human race is at an evolutionary turning point. We're very close to having the power to construct our own mental functions, through a knowledge of genetics (which I think will be complete within the next 25 years); and through a knowledge of the cerebral mechanisms which underlie our behavior. The question is what sort of humans would we like, ideally, to construct?” He smiles. “Not only our cities are very badly planned; we as human beings are, too. The results in both cases are disastrous."

One of these actors from the 1964 Players Directory went on to become "The Red Elvis." He died in East Berlin in 1986 under suspicious circumstances.

Dean Cyril Reed (Sept 22, 1938 – June 13, 1986) was an American singer-songwriter and actor who became a superstar in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. He adopted socialist politics while touring and became known for his anti-American lyrics in the Eastern Bloc, earning him the nickname "The Red Elvis". He permanently moved to East Germany in 1973 (keeping his American citizenship) and became the only American to receive the Lenin Prize for art.

Quote:Despite Reed’s move to the Eastern Bloc, he still spoke highly for his love for America and retained U.S. citizenship for the rest of his life. The belt buckle and acoustic guitar he was known for travelled with him from America and he wore them with tremendous pride. However, in a 60 Minutes interview in 1986 about the Berlin Wall and Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, Reed compared US President Ronald Reagan to Joseph Stalin, inciting fury in Americans, who sent death threats to his family.

Six-weeks after the interview was given, Reed was found dead at age 47 in Zeuthener near his home in East Berlin. The abruptness and timing of his death has launched ongoing theories from assassination by the CIA or KGB to suicide. A letter was found on the back of his screenplay for a film about the Wounded Knee Massacre that expressed regret about the failing relationship with his third wife Renate. Whatever the cause of his death may have been, Reed’s legacy lived on as the Eastern Bloc’s most notable superstar.

Cowboy Communism: Dean Reed’s Tour of the Eastern Bloc

In 2004, Russia's Rossiya television channel aired a documentary on Dean Reed, entitled Кто Вы, мистер Рид? (Who Are You, Mister Reed?), speculating on the possibilities of him having been a CIA, KGB or Stasi agent, but failing to present any concrete evidence to support any such theories. Between 1976 and 1978, he worked for the Stasi's international department according to a 2005 book.

The Great White Fleet set sail on 16 December 1907, travelling first to South America before moving onto Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe. The battleships were painted white (hence the name) and were intended as a demonstration of the United States' naval strength.

Nov 18, 1963: The first push-button telephone goes into service! Bell Systems / Western Electric introduced the pushbutton telephone at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle. They replaced the basic design language from a circle to square to visibly highlight the change from dial to pushbutton design.

On April 22, 1963 President John F. Kennedy started the countdown for the opening of the 1964 World's Fair by keying "1964" on a touch-tone telephone in the Oval Office, starting "a contraption which will count off the seconds until the opening". On November 18, 1963, the first electronic push-button system with touch-tone dialing was commercially offered by Bell Telephone to customers in the Pittsburgh area towns of Carnegie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania, after the dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) system had been tested for several years in multiple locations, including Greensburg. This phone, the Western Electric 1500, had only ten buttons. In 1968 it was replaced by the twelve-button model 2500, adding the asterisk or star (*) and the octothorpe or pound or hash (#) keys. These were manufactured up until 1980. It wasn’t until the 1980s that push-button telephones were in a majority of US homes. The letters Q and Z were never added.

This video is from a promotional film about the 1962 World’s Fair. The pushbutton phone was such a significant part of this film that it was called “Century 21 Calling.” How many seconds can you save doing it the new way?

And finally, now that the pushbutton telephone was available, it was time to propose concepts for the videophone, such as this concept ad from 1963. The Bell System Picturephone was an early video telephone developed by AT&T and introduced at the 1964 World's Fair. Super Sci-fi bleeding edge tech!

I remember my parents had like a 25 foot extension cord that would reach from the kitchen into the bathroom. Over time the cord would get all twisted and gummy gunked up causing you to have a battle royal fit of rage. Good times.

In 1984, a company called Concept Communication developed a circuit board for personal computers that significantly improved video performance, doubling the frame rate from 15 to 30 frames per second. OMG, incredible!! Ha, ha.

The innovation brought the cost of a functional videophone system down from $100,000 to a still-hefty but more attainable $12,000. The company also secured a key patent for a video codec, laying the groundwork for modern full-motion videoconferencing.

American west coast psychedelic rock band founded in 1967, Spirit - Nature's Way, Live From The Bottom Line in New York, November 18, 1990, from the 1970 Spirit album Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus.

The stage name "Randy California" (born Randy Craig Wolfe; guitars, vocals) was given to him by Jimi Hendrix to distinguish him from another Randy in the band, Randy Palmer, whom Hendrix dubbed "Randy Texas".

Together with Cassidy, songwriter/front man Jay Ferguson, bassist Mark Andes (with whom California and Cassidy had initially formed a band called the Red Roosters) and keyboardist John Locke, California founded the band Spirit. Their first, self-titled album was released in January 1968, a month before California's 17th birthday.

He then wrote the band's biggest hit, 1968's "I Got a Line on You" for Spirit's second album, The Family That Plays Together. He also wrote the single "1984", inspired by George Orwell's novel of the same name. Released in early 1970, "the song was so pointed against the U.S. government that it was banned from many radio stations, although it was a huge hit in Germany."

Randy California drowned in the Pacific Ocean on January 2, 1997 at the age of 45 while rescuing his 12-year-old son Quinn from a rip current near his mother's home at Molokai, Hawaii. He managed to push Quinn (who survived) toward the shore. Randy's body was never recovered.

The Randy Craig Wolfe Trust was established after his death and, using royalties from California's recording contracts, financially supports the Randy California Project, an after-school music education program for underprivileged elementary school children in Ventura County.

I’ll leave you with a chillingly portent-filled lyric lifted from the album California Blues, which came out toward the end of 1996:

“Won’t you carry me down to the ocean
Fall beneath the deep blue sea
If I happen to drown...
Don’t rescue me”
(‘The River’ by Randy California, Aqua Blue Music 1996)

Radio Hall of Famer, cultural icon & world famous radio host Barry Hansen aka(Dr. Demento) is a music-knowledge genius with a vast record collection and was best known for his radio show on KMET. He lived with some of the SPIRIT band members, taped their early shows, and even produced their demo tape. Above all, he was a huge fan of Randy.

Nov 20, 1946: Let the Las Vegas gluttony begin! The El Rancho Vegas opened the first ALL YOU CAN EAT Chuck Wagon buffet. Conceived by Herb McDonald, the Buckaroo Buffet cost $1 and promised every possible variety of hot and cold entrees to appease the howling coyote in your innards. Later a lunch buffet was added.

McDonald was a Strip visionary. He was instrumental in bringing the Beatles to Vegas, created major golf tournaments and convinced the National Finals Rodeo to move from Oklahoma in 1984. His greatest accomplishment was in the 50s, when he backed a special Nevada census that proved Las Vegas -not Reno- was the state's largest city...which led to a shift in the balance of economic power.

Bon Appétit...

Quote:Born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1919, McDonald attended Pasadena Junior College and Stanford University prior to serving three years as a Navy pilot during World War II. After the war, he became promotion and publicity manager for Music Corporation of America in Beverly Hills, California. In that position he booked acts for Las Vegas resorts. When he booked Peggy Lee for an engagement at the El Rancho Vegas in January 1946, she invited him to the opening, and when the owner offered him a position as entertainment director, Las Vegas became his lifelong home.

McDonald worked at a number of Strip properties besides the El Rancho: the Club Bingo, Silver Slipper and Last Frontier Village, and the Sahara, where he remained for over two decades. His work brought him into contact with some of the biggest names to visit Las Vegas. He played gin rummy with Bugsy Siegel when the mobster stayed at the El Rancho Vegas while contemplating his takeover of Billy Wilkerson's development of the Flamingo Hotel and Casino, picked up Howard Hughes at the airport when the famed aviator visited Las Vegas in the late 1940s, and hosted the Beatles at the Sahara when they performed in Las Vegas in 1964.

McDonald eventually became a senior vice president of Del Webb International, which purchased the Sahara Hotel, and he formed his own company, Herb McDonald Consultants, to produce golf tournaments.

Perhaps Herb McDonald's most lasting contribution was his development of a new generation of publicists. He developed a large publicity department at the Sahara and hired many college graduates and served as a valuable mentor to them as they developed their craft as Las Vegas publicists.

A possible scenario of the "escape of the Unholy Trinity," Martin Bormann (the money man), Heinrich "Gestapo" Müller (Black projects security) and the elusive Hans Kammler (administrative requirements of handling an advanced research project like the Bell) as extensively detailed in chapter 4 of Joseph P. Farrell's book "Nazi International".

Quote:Bormann and Müller arranged for body doubles to be planted and an escape-and-death scenario cultivated for postwar Allied and Soviet investigators, while arranging their flight from Berlin by air, and thence to Hamburg where the two boarded the U-234 which Bormann knew, by dint of a secret arrangement negotiated directly with the Americans very likely through OSS station chief in Zurich, Allen Dulles – that the U-234 would receive quiet and covert protection from them in order to secure the safe arrival of its nuclear cargo in the United States. This implies further that Bormann at least, and Müller and Kammler most likely, were accurately apprised on the actual state of affairs in the Manhattan Project, and knew of its crucial shortages of fissile uranium-235 as well as of its difficulties in making a plutonium bomb workable without the infusion that the U-234’s infrared proximity fuses could provide.

Quote:There's nothing hotter than a little blue-on-blue action, and things are getting steamy at Chicago's City Hall as Mayor Brandon Johnson and his allies go to war with other Democrats over the scraps of the Windy City's finances.

We're in the endgame now.

Jim Talamonti reported for Center Square on Tuesday that Johnson's allies "launched a seven-figure campaign" to support the mayor's budget because opponents argue that "the mayor’s tax plans will send the city into an economic death spiral and could bring about costly litigation."

As of today, Chicago's political position is probably best described as paralysis.

The city council's finance commission rejected Johnson's tax package on Monday, leaving the council with no budget to vote on yesterday. But that's just the start.

While they have until Dec. 31 to approve a budget, the two sides — maybe best described as the Johnson Democrats and the Slightly Less Insane Democrats — are fighting over billions.

Chicago Board of Education member Norma Rios Sierra, a Johnson appointee, "threatened layoffs if aldermen did not approve Johnson’s plan to divert $1 billion in tax-increment financing funds to Chicago Public Schools."

The sticking point is Johnson's "head tax" on Chicago business, originally proposed as $21-per-month tax for every worker at a business with 100 or more employees. Under pressure, Johnson revised the head tax to firms with 200+ employees, but also offset revenue shortfalls by hiking the city's "cloud tax" on software/streaming services further (from 11% to 15%).

"Nice server farm you have there. Be a shame if something was to happen to it."

Here's the thing: Johnson's head tax isn't meant to provide property tax relief for families stuck with bigger bills — more on that in a moment — or pay for vital city services like police and fire. Instead, he hopes to raise $100 million for "violence prevention and mental health." In other words, a nine-figure slush fund for progressive nonprofits.

More than half the city's aldermen (aka city council members) oppose the head tax. 3rd Ward's Pat Dowell — the Finance Committee chair and a Johnson appointee — declared his opposition to a head tax "at any level."

Good lord, even Gov. JB Pritzker thinks it's a bad idea.

Then there's Johnson's proposal to tax social media, which might not even be legal. YOLO, right?

And Another Thing: Commercial real estate reportedly lost $400 million in value since the previous assessment, putting a bigger property tax burden on homeowners. Johnson doesn't seem to have a plan for that, maybe because he never saw a tax he wanted to cut.

Meanwhile, the city's pension system is an underfunded wreck that taxes can't fix, because there won't be any sheep left to shear — er, people and businesses left to tax — if the city imposed taxes big enough.

"What about the Republicans?" I can hear you ask. "Where are they in this fight?"

Let me crack the jokes, OK?

No Republican has been mayor or held city clerk, treasurer, or similar roles in decades. There isn't a single registered Republican on the city council. Everybody knows that Chicago is the most reliably Democratic big city in the country, with Republicans basically shut out of the municipal government for most of a century. Not even San Francisco can match that.

So maybe the Republicans are hiding in their basements with their ammo, waiting for the worst to pass. Or maybe they're already in Florida, waiting for that property tax repeal to become law.

Is Chicago really in the endgame? It's impossible to know for sure, and to paraphrase Adam Smith, there's a lot of ruin in a big city. And you have to assume that, so long as there are sheep to be fleeced, competing Democrat factions will eventually set aside their differences long enough to wield the shears.

I guess the real question then is how long there will be enough sheep.

Endgame: Chicago

Just a theory, but I think what we all been witnessing here in 2025 is an intense warring battle between the elites from the puppet politicians to their masters at the top of the pyramid. All the corruption from the Guns, Oil, Drugs (G.O.D.) & human trafficking networks to the cartel banksters that funnel & launder the global economy like a conveyor belt of mass propaganda manure. Expect to see much more in the next year or two with more wars, political violence & assassinations. The wild West is going global.

Just like back in ancient times where we had "Houses" of elite wealthy families. They all knew each other, one group of Houses would form an alliance to do battle with the other elite houses. The poor peasants were stuck in between and forced to do battle. Eventually, we might end up with a modern Bronze Age collapse and then we'll have our existential crisis or RESET. That's one option to wipe out all the Western debt. Course, the aftermath on what becomes the brave new world probably won't sit well for most of us. I try to be an optimist and think, it'll all work out in the end. However, there will ALWAYS be winners & losers.

Stephen Jay Gould (American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science) argued that nationalism and cultural prejudice played a role in the ready acceptance of Piltdown Man as genuine, because it satisfied European expectations that the earliest humans would be found in Eurasia, and the British in particular wanted a "first Briton" to set against fossil hominids found elsewhere in Europe.

Next year will mark 30 years since America launched a boomer. Now Electric Boat is preparing for the launch of the biggest US submarines in history, while taking advantage of the modular construction methods of the Virginia class.

The behemoth sub will literally be built on the Thames river. How to launch the giants from the South Yard Assembly Building? Enter the aptly named "ATLAS", the new 618 x 140 ft self-ballasting Floating Dry Dock that Electric Boat had Bollinger Shipyards construct, commissioned last month. The plan includes dredging the river and demolishing two small piers near the SYAB to build two large piers to service the Columbia's.

Nov 22, 1935: The China Clipper inaugurates the first commercial transpacific air service, connecting Alameda, California with Manila. China Clipper (NC14716) was the first of three Glenn L. Martin M-130 four-engine flying boats (Philippine Clipper and Hawaii Clipper) built at a cost of $417,000 for Pan American Airways and was one of the largest airplanes of its time.

On November 29, the airplane reached its destination, Manila, after traveling via Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, and Sumay, Guam, and delivered over 110,000 pieces of mail. The crew for this flight included Edwin C. Musick as pilot and Fred Noonan as navigator.

Quote:It was the famous China Clipper, bound for a 59-hour flight to Manila.

The Pan American Airways flight that took off on Nov. 22, 1935, was the first regularly scheduled flight across the oceans of the world. It was hailed in The Chronicle as the beginning of "a giant new age," and the Martin 130 seaplane named China Clipper was called "the greatest airplane ever built in America."

Twenty-five thousand people saw the Clipper take off, "spreading proudly her silver wings against the setting sun, flashing proudly 150 years of Yankee tradition," as the paper called it.

The first flight was rich in symbolism: The plane was so heavily loaded that the pilot, Capt. Edwin Musick, was forced to fly under the cables of the unfinished Bay Bridge, then gained altitude along the San Francisco waterfront and over the Golden Gate.

One week and four stops later, the China Clipper was in Manila. It was the beginning of a new era: The voyage would have taken 15 to 16 days by fast steamship. It was a pioneering flight - for various reasons, mostly political, it was four years before a commercial flight crossed the Atlantic.

"It was an audacious gamble and a great leap forward," said John Hill, an assistant director at San Francisco International Airport and curator of a new China Clipper exhibit at SFO. "Every airplane that crosses the ocean even now is flying in the wake of the China Clipper."

The China Clipper and its intrepid crew became instant heroes after the first flight, in the Depression year of 1935. "Clippermania" swept the land - there were China Clipper postage stamps, toys, gifts and souvenirs, Clipper labels on farm produce, a brew called Clipper beer. Not long after the first flight, Musick, the skipper of the China Clipper, made the cover of Time magazine.

The next year, the movie "China Clipper" came out, starring Pat O'Brien as an airline executive and Humphrey Bogart as a steely-eyed pilot. Although there were two other identical Martin flying boats, the China Clipper was first and the one to remember.

The main problem was the first leg: 2,400 miles from San Francisco Bay to Honolulu. The planes had to have sufficient range to make Hawaii, and the crews had to have the navigation skills to make the trip and find the islands. Pan Am crews were trained in celestial navigation, dead reckoning and in radio direction finding systems.

The first flight carried no passengers-only the mail, more than 110,000 letters. There was a radio broadcast message from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who proclaimed himself "an air-minded sailor" and wished the flight good luck.

At 3:20 p.m., Postmaster General James Farley told the pilot: "Captain Musick, you have your sailing orders. Cast off and depart for Manila forthwith."

The plane taxied down the bay, turned into the wind and took off. It was 3:47 p.m.

The first stop was Honolulu, 21 hours later. The plane stayed overnight in Honolulu, then made other overnight stops at Midway, then Wake Island, then Guam. The China Clipper finally landed in Manila on Nov. 29 as thousands cheered.

After picking up the U.S.-bound mail, the China Clipper returned to Alameda on Dec. 6.

In 1936, the Clipper began carrying passengers. The service was first class and legendary, with fine food served on fine china. A one-way ticket to Manila, including overnight stays at Pan Am hotels in Honolulu, Midway, Wake and Guam, cost $950 -the equivalent of $14,650 in current dollars [$22,142 in 2025].

In 1939, the planes began flying out of Clipper Lagoon between Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island on San Francisco Bay.

The original Martin seaplanes ultimately were replaced with much larger and luxurious Boeing B319 flying boats, which could carry 74 passengers, compared with only 18 for the Martins.

The seaplanes flew until World War II, logged 2.4 million miles, and carried 3,500 passengers and 750,000 pounds of mail and air freight. When postwar service resumed, aviation advances had ended the era of flying boats.

China Clipper's flight made history

On January 22, 2024, Emmanuel Calairo, Chairperson of the National Historical Commission in the presence of MaryKay Carlson, the US Ambassador to the Philippines and Commodore Marco Tronqued, unveiled a historical marker at the Manila Yacht Club, honoring the arrival of China Clipper to the Philippines in 1935.

The Triple Clipper tragedy::

The China Clipper remained in Pan Am service until January 8, 1945, when it was destroyed in a crash in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Flight 161 had started at Miami bound for Leopoldville in the Belgian Congo, making its first stop to refuel at Puerto Rico before flying on to Port-of-Spain. After one missed approach, on the second approach to land it came down too low and hit the water at a high speed and nose-down a mile-and-a-quarter short of its intended landing area. The impact broke the hull in two which quickly flooded and sank. Twenty-three passengers and crew were killed; there were seven survivors including Captain C.A. Goyette, Pilot-in-Command for the flight, and Captain L.W. Cramer, First Officer, who was flying the plane from the left seat when it crashed. The Aviation Safety Network

In 1985, Pan Am resurrected the "China Clipper" aircraft name onto its new Boeing 747-212B registered N723PA, which was named "China Clipper II" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the China Clipper Flight. On November 22, 1985, the China Clipper II began its flight across the Pacific to retrace the original route of the first China Clipper Flight. The flight departed from San Francisco and made several stop flight following the original China Clipper flight route, such as Honolulu, Wake Island, Guam and all the way to Manila with its final destination to Bali, which was a new route that was not included in the original itinerary. Pan Am also made several advertisements and television commercials to promote the new China Clipper II plane which shows the original China Clipper Martin M-130 plane and also the new China Clipper II Boeing 747-212B aircraft and was aired in several countries as part of Pan Am promotion to commemorate China Clipper 50th Anniversary Flight.

Hawaii Clipper Pan Am Flight 229 disappeared over the Pacific Ocean sometime after departing Guam on July 28, 1938 with six passengers and nine crew. According to the website Hunt for the Lost Clipper the plane & bodies have never been found.

Hawaii Clipper: The Final Film

Philippine Clipper Pan Am Flight V-1104 crashed on the morning of January 21, 1943, in southwest of Ukiah, Northern California.

"The wind was blowing so hard it blew over trees ... The plane was flying very low. It had its lights on and came right over my house and disappeared in the storm to the north."
— Mrs. Charles Wallach, Civil Defense aircraft spotter

The 10 passengers on board were all U.S. naval officers from Pearl Harbor. Among them was Rear Admiral Robert H. English, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Submarine Fleet, the submarine component of the United States Pacific Fleet. Rear Admiral English planned to visit submarine support facilities at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard bordering San Pablo Bay, and was accompanied by three of his senior staff officers. Another passenger was Lieutenant Edna Morrow, a Navy nurse diagnosed with terminal cancer who was on her way home to die. Also on board was Captain Robert Holmes Smith, formerly in command of the USS Sperry (AS-12) submarine tender, and recently promoted to Commander of Squadron 2, Pacific Submarine Fleet.

On Jan 11, 1938, Capt. Edwin C. Musick and his crew of six died in the crash of the Sikorsky S-42 Samoan Clipper (ex-Pan American Clipper II) near Pago Pago, American Samoa, on a cargo and survey flight returning from Auckland, New Zealand. Charred plane debris was found but the bodies were never recovered.

Incidentally, 1935 was the year of the first "canned" beer sold in the USA by Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company releasing “Krueger’s Finest Beer & “Cream Ale” in a new "steel" can format. Cans disappeared at the start of WWII and reappeared in 1947. Aluminum cans didn't come about until 1958 and would have been sooner, but America was fighting a big war.

Nov 22, 1989: Elmer Sherwin, a Vegas enigma hit a $4.6 million Megabucks jackpot on opening day of the Mirage in Las Vegas. Upon winning he dreamed to "hit again". Fast forward to 2005 and he did!...at age 92 in The Cannery for $21.1 million!!!

Quote:According to one estimate, based on the number of stops and the number of stops corresponding to a jackpot symbol on each reel, the probability of winning the ‘Megabucks’ progressive jackpot is 1 in 49.8 million spins. Nevertheless, the late Elmer Sherwin, who died in 2007 at the age of 93, defied astronomical odds – in the order of trillions to one – to win the jackpot not once, but twice, at two different Las Vegas casinos, sixteen years apart.

Sherwin was already a 76-year-old retiree when, on November 22, 1989, he lined up the Megabucks symbols for the first time at The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip, which had only opened to the public earlier that day, and collected $4.65 million for his $3 stake. According to a spokesman for The Mirage, Sherwin played for about an hour-and-a-half and invested about $100 before winning what was, at the time, claimed to be the largest jackpot ever won on a slot machine in Las Vegas.

Evidently not entirely satisfied with winning the progressive jackpot once, Sherwin continued to pursue what he later called his ‘life’s dream’ of a second Megabucks win for the next sixteen years. The stars, or at least the Megabucks symbols, aligned for a second time at the Cannery Casino in Downtown Las Vegas on September 16, 2005, and Sherwin collected a further $21.1 million. By now aged 92, Sherwin donated much of his winnings to charitable causes, including to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
