A two-page spread titled “The Christmas Coach” appeared in The Saturday Evening Post on December 28, 1935. The caption reads: “Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; and transport the sailor and the traveler, thousands of miles away, back to his own fireside, his quiet home!”

Rockwell once described painting the piece:

“This was painted for The Saturday Evening Post in California during a very hot August. The heat in the studio was terrific. Perhaps you can see that the faces are shiny: that is perspiration. I especially remember the stagecoach driver wrapped in those heavy clothes, with sweat running down his face and off his nose … The wonderful part of working near Hollywood is that you can find everything. A place outside the city has every type of historic vehicle, including perfect English coaches … This painting now hangs in the clubhouse of the Society of Illustrators, New York.”

Man and the Moon TV show aired on December 28, 1955. Directed by Ward Kimball. Rerun in 1959 as Tomorrow the Moon. The show takes a look at how scientists are preparing for a flight to the moon, beginning with a live-action segment & then going into animation as the rocket ship takes off to film the backside of the moon. Dr. Wernher von Braun worked as a technical adviser & appeared in the film.

THE LAST WAR (Sekai daisensô) director Shue Matsubayashi; press release from TOHO & newspaper ad from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from December 28, 1961. Based on newspaper archive searches alone, it looks like this film's first and only U.S. theatrical release was in Honolulu, Hawaii in January 3, 1962. It was not shown in mainland USA until January 1967 despite there was an international trailer being aired in 1961. First released in Japan on Oct 8, 1961 and is signficantly longer at 110 minutes vs the hacked up American version at 79 minutes.

In the longer Japanese version of the missile base short-circuit sequence, just before the commanding officer presses the missile activation button, he says in an anguished voice, “God, please forgive me.” It is a powerful moment, and it is unfortunate that the American distributor deleted it.

Over these scenes, instead of dialogue, we hear the Disney song “It’s a Small World.” Next, we hear a portion of a speech by President John F. Kennedy in which he says, “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.”

The French star rose to fame in 1956 with And God Created Woman, her barefoot mambo captivating the world and defining post-war sensuality across nearly 50 films until her 1973 retirement. She then founded the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in 1986, which runs refuges, rescues animals globally, and fights for anti-cruelty laws, crediting her with protections in dozens of countries. Her later years sparked controversy over statements on immigration and Islam, leading to five court convictions for inciting racial hatred, while admirers praised her as a patriot and French President Macron hailed her as a symbol of freedom.

1965: in Webb County Texas they grow cactus and kids. According to this 1965 DOD & Office of Civil Defense film THE PROTECTED SCHOOL, United High School near Laredo, TX was the first school in the nation to not only build its classrooms underground, but also design the school with a protective shield for the lower level so that in the event of nuclear fallout, the school could be locked down to serve as a shelter for the community. It was also equipped with decontamination showers.

The Quiet Earth (1985) - New Zealand director Geoff Murphy's (1938-2018) dystopian apocalypse cult classic sci-fi film about a scientist who awakens to find himself alone in the world. John Hobson, a geneticist involved in a project concerned with manipulating DNA, awakes in his hotel room in Thames, New Zealand, after a nightmare of falling from a great height. His wristwatch has stopped at 6:12. All humans and animals have disappeared. No watch or clock shows anything later than 6:12. In a desperate attempt to search for others, he finds only two who have their own agenda.

"The Effect" referred to in the film is defined as being a distortion of the space-time fabric.

"The Quiet Earth" is actually based on the experience of an American tourist in New Zealand in the 1970s. New Zealanders always take the weekends off and sleep late. The tourist arrived in the center of Auckland on a Sunday morning and found it completely deserted. He later said he felt like the last man on Earth.

Zac enters his laboratory outside Auckland, but fails to contact any of the other labs around the world. In an underground lab, he discovers the dead body of Perrin, his superior, at the primary Flashlight Grid control panel; a monitor displays the message "Operation Flashlight Complete". The mass disappearance seems to coincide with the moment Flashlight was activated.

Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) calls the energy grid, "Project Flashlight". Ironically enough, there was an American defense project called "Operation Flashlight" around the same time as depicted in the film.

The time that all clocks stopped due to 'The Effect' was 6:12 in the morning. This 6:12 is a reference in the Bible's Book of Revelations"

"And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;"

The movie opens with the rise of the sun above the sea, and ends with the rise of a ringed planet (presumably Saturn) above the sea. One of those Sci-fi lucid nightmare films that may stay with you for a long time.

Based on the 1981 novel of same name by Craig Harrison, this Kiwi sci-fi film was nominated for eight New Zealand Film and TV Awards and ended up winning in all eight categories. It's on the list of "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die".

Quote:Lunar Exploration Suit

In this September 1960 photo, Allyn B. “Hap” Hazard wears a space suit he designed. Hap was a Senior Development Engineer in the Missile Engineering Section of JPL in 1959 when he wrote a plan for manned space exploration. JPL was transitioning from missiles to space exploration, and Hap had a lot of ideas about the subject. In March 1961, Hap left JPL to work at Aerojet, and presumably to work on the suit and his other inventions. In addition to the suit, he designed and built a hydrofoil boat and a snow making machine during his time at JPL.

It doesn’t appear that the suit was ever an official JPL project, and very little documentation exists in the JPL Archives except for the photographs and his report, which includes a disclaimer, “The views expressed in this paper are those of the writer ….” The Section 352 online photo album includes a series of photos and drawings of his Lunar Exploration Space Suit Mark 1 and plans for a moonmobile that could be controlled from the dashboard inside the suit.

After Hap left JPL, he and the suit appeared or were mentioned in Life magazine, Boys Life, and the Syracuse Post-Standard. An Experimental Engineering class at UCLA studied the suit, and Mattel created an astronaut toy that wore a replica of it. Even today, there are many web sites that include the story of Hap Hazard, his space suit, and Major Matt Mason (the toy).

As part of Public Law 109-148, is a highly controversial tort liability shield intended to protect pharmaceutical manufacturers from financial risk in the event of a declared public health emergency. The part of PREPA that actually affords such protection is now codified at 42 U.S.C. § 247d-6d. The act specifically affords to drug & vaccine makers immunity from actions related to the manufacture, testing, development, distribution, administration and use of medical countermeasures against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents of terrorism, epidemics, and pandemics.

The shortwave signal, nicknamed The Buzzer for its drone on 4625 kHz since the 1970s, broadcast the ballet's melody for two hours on December 30 around 14:00-16:00 UTC, overlaying its usual hum. This came hours after Moscow blamed Ukraine for a drone attack on Putin's Valdai residence, calling it an assassination attempt to sabotage peace talks—claims Kyiv dismissed as propaganda. Radio fans dismissed doomsday fears, pointing to jamming or hackers, as the buzzer continued normally underneath and pro-war songs followed briefly. Swan Lake's history of airing during Soviet crises added to the intrigue, though no official explanation ever emerged.

Ochs, the publisher of The New York Times, hired the sign maker company Artkraft Strauss to build then lower a 700-pound wood-and-iron ball, five feet in diameter and illuminated by 100 25-watt bulbs, to mark the passage from 1907 to 1908. The original ball was made by Jacob Starr, a Ukrainian immigrant metalworker. RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 01-02-2026

Welcome to 2026, the future time of METROPOLIS, released in 1927 that takes place in the year 2026. The film's dystopian city remains a timeless allegory for class division and technology, without relying on a precise date.

IMDb and other common references, place the story in the year 2026. This comes partly from an English edition of Thea von Harbou's 1925 novel (reprinted in 1963) titled "The World of 2026 A.D."

Additions in later versions, like Giorgio Moroder's 1984 re-score, which included a title card stating 2026. Other versions vary where some early U.S. releases suggested year 3000, and older analyses placed it around 2000, but 2026 is the most frequently cited futuristic setting in internet discussions.

In Roman mythology, Janus was the god of doors, gates, & transitions. Janus represented the middle ground between both concrete and abstract dualities such as life/death, beginning/end, youth/adulthood, rural/urban, war/peace, and barbarism/civilization. The month of January is named for Janus (Ianuarius)—looking backward at the old year and forward at the new. God of all beginnings, gates, transitions, time, choices, duality, doorways, passages, and ENDINGS.

Happy National Hangover Day. Book of Revelation (8:10-11):

January 1, 1776: General George Washington hoists the first United States flag, the Continental Union Flag, at Prospect Hill in Somerville, Massachusetts. The first United States flag, the “Grand Union,” became the unofficial national flag, preceding the 13-star, 13-stripe version.

Quote:Prospect Hill was where George Washington had his encampment and fortifications during the Siege of Boston during the first year of the American Revolution. On New Year’s Day, 1776, in order to raise morale for the beleaguered Continental Army soldiers, the very first American flag raising on American soil took place.

There is some debate as to which flag was actually flown on January 1st. Traditional accounts state the Continental Union Flag, the de facto flag of the United Colonies and the first flag of the United States featuring 13 stripes and the Union Jack was flown. Modern researchers have questioned this, claiming the standard Union Jack was flown or perhaps a combination of the two flags. Others have proposed that maybe a defaced version of the standard British Red Ensign such as the flag for the City of Taunton might’ve been used. The flag on top of Prospect Hill follows the traditional account of flying the Continental colors and it wasn’t until the Flag Act of 1777, the recognizable design featuring stars in a blue canton was officially adopted as the new flag for the United States.

Prospect Hill Monument

The Continental Congress left no record as to why it chose these colors. However, in 1782, the Congress of the Articles of Confederation chose the colors for the Great Seal of the United States with these meanings:

    white for purity and innocence
    red for valor and hardiness
blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice

According to the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, the colors originated with the British flag, which is called the Union Jack and was a combination of the Scottish cross of St. Andrew (white on blue) and the English cross of St. George (red on white) at the time. (The modern British flag also incorporates the Irish cross of St. Patrick into its design.)

The Stars and Stripes officially replaced it on June 14, 1777.

Nevada Paiute spiritual figure Wovoka, recovering from illness, experienced an alleged spiritual revelation during the solar eclipse of Jan 1, 1889, which entailed the resurrection of the Paiute dead and the removal of white settlers from their lands. That vision became known as the Ghost Dance, and became a religious movement among some western tribes.

One of his chief sources of authority among Paiutes was his alleged ability to control the weather. The slaughter of Big Foot's band at Wounded Knee Creek in 1890 was cruel proof that whites were not about to simply vanish, that the millennium was not at hand. Wovoka quickly lost his notoriety and lived as Jack Wilson until sometime in 1932. He left the Ghost Dance as evidence of a growing pan-Indian identity which drew upon elements of both white Christian and Indian traditions.

Wovoka (1858-1932) Paiute Shaman, spiritual leader and creator of the Ghost Dance:

Quote:
Wovoka's Message:
The Promise of the Ghost Dance

[James Mooney, an ethnologist with the Bureau of American Ethnology, was sent to investigate the Ghost Dance movement in 1891. He obtained a copy of Wovoka's message from a Cheyenne named Black Short Nose, who had been part of a joint Cheyenne-Arapaho delegation that visited Wovoka in Nevada in August 1891. Wovoka (also known as Jack Wilson) delivered his message orally, and it was transcribed by a member of the group who had attended Carlisle Indian School. Mooney renders the "Carlisle English" of this transcription in a more grammatical form.]

THE MESSIAH LETTER

When you get home you must make a dance to continue five days. Dance four successive nights, and the last night keep us the dance until the morning of the fifth day, when all must bathe in the river and then disperse to their homes. You must all do in the same way.

I, Jack Wilson, love you all, and my heart is full of gladness for the gifts you have brought me. When you get home I shall give you a good cloud [rain?] which will make you feel good. I give you a good spirit and give you all good paint. I want you to come again in three months, some from each tribe there [the Indian Territory].

There will be a good deal of snow this year and some rain. In the fall there will be such a rain as I have never given you before.

Grandfather [a universal title of reverence among Indians and here meaning the messiah] says, when your friends die you must not cry. You must not hurt anybody or do harm to anyone. You must not fight. Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life. This young man has a good father and mother. [Possibly this refers to Casper Edson, the young Arapaho who wrote down this message of Wovoka for the delegation].

Do not tell the white people about this. Jesus is now upon the earth. He appears like a cloud. The dead are still alive again. I do not know when they will be here; maybe this fall or in the spring. When the time comes there will be no more sickness and everyone will be young again.

Do not refuse to work for the whites and do not make any trouble with them until you leave them. When the earth shakes [at the coming of the new world] do not be afraid. It will not hurt you.

I want you to dance every six weeks. Make a feast at the dance and have food that everybody may eat. Then bathe in the water. That is all. You will receive good words again from me some time. Do not tell lies.

"The Rest of the Story" was introduced in 1976, this segment was a series where Harvey would tell stories with a twist at the end, revealing famous people or events in an unexpected light. It became immensely popular, leading to books and even a television adaptation.

"Paul Harvey News and Comment" held the title for the longest running network radio show of its kind, with Harvey continuing to broadcast until his death in 2009.

Jan 1, 1956: Russians Working On Atomic Icebreaker / WATCH THAT FALL-OUT!

Russian Icebreakers are leap years ahead of the Americans. Today they have at least 40 icebreakers in active service and 8 of them are nuclear-powered. Whereas the Americans have three, none are nuclear-powered.

The active nuclear-powered Russian icebreakers:

Project 22220 (LK-60Ya) class (newer, more powerful): Arktika, Sibir, Ural, Yakutia (4 vessels, all commissioned by late 2024/early 2025).

Older Arktika class: Yamal, 50 Let Pobedy (2 vessels).

Taymyr class (shallow-draft river icebreakers): Taymyr, Vaygach (2 vessels).

US icebreakers:

USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10): Heavy polar icebreaker, commissioned in 1976. It remains operational and is the only U.S. heavy icebreaker capable of independent operations in thick Antarctic ice. It typically deploys annually for Operation Deep Freeze (e.g., its 29th Antarctic mission began in late 2025).

USCGC Healy (WAGB-20): Medium polar icebreaker, commissioned in 1999. It is the largest and most advanced U.S. icebreaker, primarily focused on Arctic scientific and operational missions.

USCGC Storis (WAGB-21): Medium polar icebreaker, recently acquired from commercial service (formerly the Aiviq, purchased in 2024 and renamed). It was commissioned in 2025 and is now active, adding to Arctic presence.

Jan 1, 1959: Fulgencio Batista, dictator of Cuba, is overthrown by Fidel Castro's forces. This was the triumphant arrival of the ragtag army of rebel leader Fidel Castro in Havana, a seemingly out-of-nowhere victory that concerned politicians and business leaders in the United States.

A LOT of time, money, and effort would be spent over the next five years trying to get rid of Fidel Castro. He outlived nearly everyone who tried, and by decades.

Happy National Bloody Mary Day!

Fernand ‘Pete’ Petiot, a native to the hospitality industry and a bartender who was originally from France, claimed to have invented the Bloody Mary in 1921 when he was working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. This was a place that was popular with Ernest Hemingway (who drank them by the pitcher), Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Humphry Bogart, Douglas Fairbanks Junior, Salvador Dalí and other famous American expatriates at the time, and it was owned by a former American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey, James Forman "Tod" Sloan (1874-1933), for many years. In the 1930s Petiot tried without success to change the name of the Bloody Mary to the "Red Snapper". Petiot claimed to have served drinks to every U.S. President from 1934 to 1972 except for Lyndon B. Johnson.

Jan 3, 1947: The first live television broadcast coverage of a congressional proceeding occurred when cameras were allowed into the House Chamber to telecast the opening of the 80th Congress by Speaker Joseph William Martin Jr. However, by 1952 they were banned not only from regular floor sessions but in committee hearings as well.

Concern centered on television's effect on institutional practices and procedures: Which aspects of House proceedings should receive coverage? Who would make that determination? Who would operate and control the cameras? How would Members respond to working under the gaze of the cameras?

Jan 3, 1957: The Hamilton Watch Company founded in 1892, Lancaster, Penn introduces the first electric watch called the 500. The most popular of which was the asymmetrical Hamilton Ventura, a favorite of Elvis Presley & the US military.

Quote:When it comes to military history, the Hamilton story is one of absolute precision. It was the superior quality and accuracy of Hamilton’s early pocket watches, as well as the ability to innovate and act quickly while maintaining high standards that caught the attention of the American military. The same qualities kept Hamilton at the forefront of supply, earning five prestigious Army-Navy ‘E’ Awards for manufacturing excellence along the way.

Hamilton Watch Company [way too rich for my blood!]

Quote:That the Ventura had star power was also underscored by many celebrities that choose the watch. Amongst them was Rod Serling, writer of The Twilight Zone, that introduced some episodes of this TV-show while wearing his Ventura. But it is of course Elvis that gave the Ventura everlasting fame when he wore it in the 1961 movie “Blue Hawaii”. The star power of the Ventura has not faded over the years. In 1997, Will Smith strapped on a Ventura re-issue in the blockbuster “Men in Black” and in 2010 featured a Ventura in an episode of the TV-show “Mad Men”.

The little-known true story of a mysterious nuclear reactor disaster — years before Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, or Fukushima. "Chronicled here for the first time is the strange tale of SL-1, an experimental military reactor located in Idaho’s Lost River Desert that exploded on the night of January 3, 1961, killing the three crewmembers on duty.

Through exclusive interviews with the victims’ families and friends, firsthand accounts from rescue workers and nuclear industry insiders, and extensive research into official documents, journalist William McKeown probes the many questions surrounding this devastating blast that have gone unanswered for decades."

President Trump says that the U.S. is going to run Venezuela with a “group,” US oil companies will return to Venezuela.

Compares it to strikes on ISIS leader Baghdadi, Soleimani, and the Iran’s nuclear program.

Says that the U.S. turned the lights off in Caracas. Alludes to some sort of capability.

Trump says that the U.S. will run Venezuela until a proper transition can take place.

No U.S. personnel killed, no equipment lost. Adds that the U.S. is prepared for more airstrikes on Venezuela.

“U.S. dominance will never be questioned again in the Western Hemisphere.”
Embargo on Venezuelan oil still in effect.
President Trump gave the green light at 10:46 PM eastern time Jan 2.
Raid arrived at Maduro’s compound at 1:01 AM EST.
Helicopters came under fire as they arrived near the landing point.

U.S. aircraft targeted Venezuela’s air defense systems to allow special forces helicopters to capture Maduro, clarified Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Kane. He added that 150 aircraft were involved in the operation against Venezuela. F-22s, F-35s, F/A-18s, EA-18s, and B-1 bombers specifically named.

"Don’t play games while this president is in office."
"We are prepared for a second wave (attack on Venezuela), a much bigger attack, if we needed to do so."

Trump says that the U.S. may have boots on the ground in Venezuela to protect U.S. oil interests. Trump suggests that the U.S. administering Venezuela for years would not cost the U.S. anything.

"The oil companies are going to spend money... we are going to get reimbursed."
President Trump indicates that Cuba is next, "It's something we are going to talk about... Cuba is a failing nation."

Rubio: "When the president speaks, you should take him seriously."

Trump: "The future will be determined by the ability to protect commerce and territory and resources that are core to national security. These are core to our national security. Just like tariffs are, they've made our country rich and they've made our national security strong, stronger than ever before.
But these are the iron laws that have always determined global power. And we're going to keep it that way."

Maduro should have anticipated that the Delta commandos would come knocking with a warrant from DEA (de-ya in Espanol) sooner or later.

Seen on the Internet: "llegaron los gringos".

Starmer: I had nothing to do with capturing Maduro. Will speak to Trump later to establish the facts. LOL.

This suggests Starmer was not briefed prior to the raid. No surprise.

Apparently, China didn't know either. Their special envoy had met with Maduro to pledge undying support only hours before he was swept away.

On the question regarding opposition leader/Nobel Peace prize winner, María Corina Machado, Trump responded:

"I think it would be tough for her to be the leader. She doesn’t have the
support or the respect within the country."

Oouch, smack down for Machado. It appears that different plans have been made.

Jan 4, 1903: Topsy, an elephant, is executed by electrocution by the owners of Luna Park, Coney Island. The Edison film company records the film Electrocuting an Elephant of Topsy's death. FFS, what a scene that must of been to have witnessed.

Quote:The 74-second film opens with Topsy being led past a crowd of people through an unfinished Luna Park to the execution spot, an island in the middle of a "lagoon" used for boat-rides, by elephant handler Carl Goliath.

The film cuts and an intervening hour and forty-five minutes are not recorded. During this unrecorded interval, Topsy refused to cross the bridge to the island forcing the park employees and Brooklyn Edison electricians to re-rig the strangling apparatus and electrical wiring to where Topsy stood. Topsy was also fed carrots laced with cyanide while copper-clad sandals connected to electric lines were strapped to her feet.

When the film camera restarts, Topsy is seen with the bridge over the lagoon and the original execution spot. Topsy tries to shake off one of the sandals and then stands still. At that point she stiffens as 6,600-volts AC is applied to her body. Smoke rises from her feet as she topples to the ground. Right at the end of the film, the noose tied around Topsy's neck can be seen tightening.

Japanese map published at the start of the Second World War, ca. 1939. Designed by Ichisaburō Sawai and titled "Pictorial Map of the Great European War", the map shows Germany and the Soviet Union invading Poland, with British and French Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Édouard Daladier looking on in concern. Air and naval battles also take place in the West. Mussolini looks angrily across the Adriatic. Hitler occupies the centre of the map. The cutout diagram with an elevator shaft over France represents the Maginot line.

Translation of the text at the bottom:

With the involvement of Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and others, the war between Germany and Poland is on the verge of becoming a world war.

Japan has decided to quickly resolve the China incident without paying attention to the European war, but it seems that the United States and Italy will be dragged into the war whether they want to or not.

The German army invaded Poland, occupying various areas with incredible force, and together with the Soviet army attacking from the east, they nearly devoured the whole country. They then turned their forces west, ready for a decisive battle with British and French forces on the French border.

There are two great fortresses here, the famous Siegfried Line and the Maginot Line, which the German and the French built using all their ingenuity, and it is said that they are difficult to breach no matter how hard an attacker tries.

In addition, the German air force, which has been hiding its strength until now, will begin to show its true strength and probably fight against the British and French air forces, so there will likely be some fierce air battles happening soon.

Seemingly produced as an educational map for children, not necessarily propagandistic but interesting all the same.

Ichisaburō Sawai produced at least one other, more openly propagandistic map (or board game?) later in the war (ca. 1944) celebrating the Japanese Empire.

Jan 4, 1959: Luna 1 becomes the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon. Luna 1 passed within 3725 miles (5995 km) of the Moon's surface on 4 January after 34 hours of flight. It went into orbit around the Sun, between the orbits of Earth and Mars.

The spacecraft contained a 19.993 MHz system which transmitted signals of 50.9 second duration, a 183.6 MHz transmitter for tracking purposes, and a 70.2 MHz transmitter. Four whip antennas and one rigid antenna mounted on the sphere provided the communications link. Power was supplied by mercury-oxide batteries and silver-zinc accumulators. There were five different sets of scientific devices for studying interplanetary space, including a magnetometer, geiger counter, scintillation counter, and micrometeorite detector, and other equipment. The measurements obtained during this mission provided new data on the Earth's radiation belt and outer space, including the discovery that the Moon had no magnetic field and that a solar wind, a strong flow of ionized plasma emmanating from the Sun, streamed through interplanetary space.

Venezuelan mural (2024) showing Jesus, Imam Mahdi and Hugo Chavez walking with Iranian, Iraqi and Lebanese military leaders.

The mural is titled "Mural of Saviours" and was unveiled in Caracas in January 2024. The figures (most called 'martyrs' here) are, from left to right:

Hamid Taghavi, Iranian Brigadier General killed in Iraq in 2014.

Hugo Chavez.

Qasem Soleimani, killed by US drone strike Jan 3, 2020.

Jesus Christ and Imam Mahdi.

Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Iraqi commander killed in the same drone strike as Soleimani.

Sayyed Razi Mousavi, Iranian Brigadier General killed by Israeli airstrike in 2023.

Imad Mughniyeh, Lebanese military leader killed during a CIA-Mossad operation in Damascus in 2008.

The mural was commissioned to mark the fourth anniversary of Soleimani's assassination. Smaller text reads in Spanish and Persian: 'The way of the martyrs is derived from the way of the divine prophets'. It's located on the city's 'Iran-Venezuela Friendship Path'.

Imam Mahdi is a messianic figure in Islamic belief that will be sent by god and appear on earth to lead the armies of Allah in the end times battle against the Dajal ("anti-christ" type figure). The Mahdi is mentioned in several compilations of hadith, but absent from the Quran and the two most-revered Sunni hadith collections (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). As such, he plays only a marginal role in Sunni Islam and some Sunni theologians have rejected the concept of the Mahdi altogether. However, the Mahdi plays a significant role among Twelver Shias, who believe that the Mahdi is Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi, the twelfth Imam, son of the eleventh Imam Hasan al-Askari (d. 874), who is said to be in occultation (ghayba) by divine will.

The powers of western democracy will never ever conquer this ideological belief system in the Eastern nor the Western hemisphere.

In case you might know, Katie Miller is Stephen Miller's wife (the White House deputy chief of staff for policy). Stephen is more crazier than Trump.

Without any doubt, the EU will respond with unparalleled levels of "monitoring the situation". Yet, subservient EU leaders applaud the regime change in Venezuela and do not seem to understand that they could be next.

We don’t do "kingdoms" anymore, chief. How many times has the USGOV broke agreements, security guarantees and btw NATO is degrading.

I'm assuming Trump's obsession with Greenland has more to do with rare earth minerals since China has slammed the door on Washington.

The US has closed or abandoned around 30 military bases and installations in Greenland since World War II. Only Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) remains active today.

We're just in the first act of The Empire Strikes Back, and even the people who say "No one is prepared for what comes next" are really prepared for what comes next. The dying world order had coping mechanisms for either a Crazy Trump or a Serious Trump, and if it held out for three years, Europe could still hope for a miracle cure. But an emboldened Crazy Trump who's as serious as Dick Cheney's heart attack, not one has a playbook for that.

Maduro to appear in New York mother court on Monday.

In 2015, President Obama issued an executive order declaring Venezuela's President a national security threat and the Maduro government a narco terrorist organisation.

The Trump administration (first term) escalated actions using Obama's 2015 EO as a foundation, including the 2020 indictments, $15 million bounty, and expanded sanctions.

In 2022, President Biden increased the then-$15 million bounty on Maduro to $25 million. $25 million for anyone who can deliver Maduro to America.

In 2025, Marco Rubio doubles the bounty to $50 million. (Amazing no takers)

In 2026, Trump executes the orders of Obama and Biden.
Who is the joker, hero or villain? Obama, Biden or Trump.

Secretary Rubio: "María Corina Machado is fantastic, I've known her for years and she is the entire movement... But here we are dealing with an immediate reality, we want a transition to democracy, but the majority of the opposition is in exile and we have to think about the next 2 or 3 weeks, 2 or 3 months...

The first steps consist of safeguarding the national interests of the United States and, at the same time, benefiting the people of Venezuela... No more drug trafficking. No more presence of Iran/Hezbollah there. No more use of the oil industry to enrich all our adversaries..."

America 250: Presidential Message on the Anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine

RE: Meme Scholar with Madness (PhD) - EndtheMadnessNow - 01-06-2026

Jan 5, 1944: The Transatlantic Daily Mail becomes the first major London newspaper to be published on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Its strategy to capture American hearts and wallets failed & was quietly shelved in 1947.

Jan 5, 1957: In a speech given to the United States Congress, within a "Special Message to the Congress on the Situation in the Middle East" President Dwight D. Eisenhower announces the establishment of what will later be called the Eisenhower Doctrine. Congress approved it in March.

Under the Eisenhower Doctrine, a country could request American economic assistance and/or aid from U.S. military forces if it was being threatened by armed aggression from another state. Eisenhower singled out the Soviet threat in his doctrine by authorizing the commitment of U.S. forces “to secure and protect the territorial integrity and political independence of such nations, requesting such aid against overt armed aggression from any nation controlled by international communism.”

Quote:The Eisenhower Doctrine

The U.S. and Egypt in the 1950s

Question: What did the United States do to try to stop Egypt from becoming a communist satellite state in the 1950s?

Answer:
The goals of U.S. foreign policy toward Egypt during the 1950s were to protect American and western European access to oil in the Middle East, to end British colonial rule throughout the area in line with the ideal of self-determination expressed in the Atlantic Charter, to contain the expansion of communism and particularly the influence of the Soviet Union in the region, and to support the independence of Israel without alienating the Arab states.

...
For the next few years, U.S. policy toward Egypt was guided by what became known as the "Eisenhower Doctrine," a declaration that the U.S. was prepared to offer assistance to any Middle Eastern country (if it asked for assistance) in order to oppose the military threat of "any nation controlled by international communism." In reality, the doctrine was fairly impractical for a number of reasons.

It invited pro-Western countries in the region to gin up internal or external "communist threats" as a simple way to procure U.S. aid without the necessity to negotiate agreements or treaties. Also, the policy was actually aimed at thwarting Nasser's ambitions to undermine his Middle Eastern rivals in the region, many of whom were pro-Western. The policy was given public shape, however, in a resolution that the Eisenhower Administration had pushed through Congress by the expediency of using the phrase "international communism." This left the Administration's actual policy in the dark and often at odds with its publicly expressed policy.

The practical result of this was State Department and CIA involvement, by covert means, in the complicated internal politics of the region, as the political winds within each country shifted. This created unintended and unwanted consequences for the United States, for which the CIA coined the term "blowback." Much of this activity, including coups and counter-coups, was inspired, influenced, or even orchestrated by the CIA. In Egypt, CIA operator Kermit Roosevelt, Jr. (Teddy's grandson), developed an exceedingly complicated and intimate relationship with (and sometimes against) the Nasser regime, as did CIA operative Miles Copeland. The U.S., however, acted for the rest of the decade under the conviction that Nasser himself was too powerful to be deposed and came to reconcile itself to containing his attempts to consolidate his influence with the other Arab states.

“We don’t have U.S. forces on the ground in Venezuela. “This is the Western Hemisphere. This is where we live — and we’re not going to allow the Western Hemisphere to be a base of operation for adversaries, competitors, and rivals of the United States.” (Watch)

“The first steps are securing what’s in the national interest of the United States and also beneficial to the people of Venezuela, and those are the things that we’re focused on right now. No more drug trafficking. No more Iran, Hezbollah presence there. No more using the oil industry to enrich all our adversaries around the world.” (Watch)

“This was not an action that required congressional approval. In fact, it couldn’t require congressional approval because this was not an invasion. This is not an extended military operation… We will seek congressional approval for actions that require congressional approval. Otherwise, they’ll get congressional notification.” (Watch)

“The whole foreign policy apparatus thinks everything is Libya, everything is Iraq, everything is Afghanistan. This is not the Middle East, and our mission here is very different. This is the Western Hemisphere.” (Watch)

“The most immediate changes are the ones that are in the national interests of the United States. That’s why we’re involved here — because of how it applies and has a direct impact on the United States.” (Watch)

“We’ve seen how our adversaries all over the world are exploiting and extracting resources from Africa, from every other country. They’re not going to do it in the Western Hemisphere. That is not going to happen under President Trump. Read our national security strategy. He is serious about it.” (Watch)

“What we are going to react to is very simple: what do you do? Not what you’re saying publicly, what happens… Do the drugs stop coming? Are the changes made? Is Iran expelled? Is Hezbollah and Iran no longer able to operate against our interests from Venezuela?” (Watch)

“It’s running policy — the policy with regards to this. We want Venezuela to move in a certain direction because not only do we think it’s good for the people of Venezuela, it’s in our national interest.” (Watch)

“We retain all the options we had before this raid and this capture and this arrest… until such time as changes are made.” (Watch)

“In the Biden Administration, they had a $25 million reward for [Maduro’s] capture — so we have a reward for his capture but we’re not going to enforce it? That’s the difference between President Trump and everybody else… President Trump did something about it.” (Watch)

“Until they address [the problems], they will continue to face this oil quarantine. They will continue to face pressure from the United States. We will continue to target drug boats if they try to run towards the United States. We will continue to seize the boats that are sanctioned with court orders. We will continue to do that and potentially other things until the things we need to see addressed are addressed… The number one thing we care about is the safety, security, wellbeing, and prosperity of the United States.” (Watch)

“Maduro is not just an indicted drug trafficker; he was an illegitimate president. He was not the head of state. I continue to see these media reports referring to him as ‘President Maduro’ and the ‘head of state.’ He was not the head of state.” (Watch)

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

"Who is this man who claims to know so much about Russian Atomic matters? Kenneth De Courcy, editor of a British magazine."

De Courcy was accused in the War Cabinet minutes of 13 April 1942 of being "up to mischief" by "writing poisonous publications about the Russians". Finally convicted in 1963 on charges of fraud, perjury, forgery.

During his trial, de Courcy, who believed he had been framed by the KGB, sacked his counsel and defended himself. He was jailed for seven years. He was an editor of the British subscription newsletter Intelligence Digest, as well as a confidant of British King Edward VIII. In the 1940s, de Courcy was part of a plot by conservative members of the British royal court to return the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Britain and establish a regency. He liked to be known as the Duc de Grantmesnil.

Between 1953 and 1964 he was a member of the committee of the Evangelical Alliance which organised Billy Graham's 'crusades' in Great Britain.

In the 1960s, via a company called Sarsden Consolidated Properties, de Courcy planned a garden city development in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He was unable to return the funds put up by investors and was jailed for seven years for fraud. De Courcy escaped from custody when he was allowed to visit his lawyer as part of his appeal, although he was recaptured.

Nuclear Research Reactor RV-1, 3 MW, Venezuela. The reactor reached criticality in 1960 and was used for several decades to perform physics research, radio-chemistry, production of radioisotopes and as neutron source under Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" program. RV-1 was last operated in 1991.

The spent fuel from Venezuela's RV-1 reactor, consisting of 56 U.S.-origin Materials Testing Reactor assemblies, was returned to the United States under the Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel program. Shipments occurred in 1998 (54 assemblies) and 1999 (2 assemblies) from Puerto Cabello to DOE sites. 20 UK-origin assemblies remained in storage.

It was the only nuclear reactor in Venezuela and one of the first reactors in Latin America. Currently, it is used as a gamma ray facility for microbiological sterilization of surgical supplies, packaging, medicine and dry food.

Unbelievable. After months of propaganda claiming Maduro is the head of the dangerous drug-smuggling cartel, the US government has admitted it was all a ruse in order to abduct a sitting head of state. LOL, par for the course.

Quote:But experts in Latin American crime and narcotics issues have said it is actually a slang term, invented by the Venezuelan media in the 1990s, for officials who are corrupted by drug money. And on Saturday, after the administration captured Mr. Maduro, the Justice Department released a rewritten indictment that appeared to tacitly concede the point.

Prosecutors still accused Mr. Maduro of participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy but they abandoned the claim that Cartel de los Soles was an actual organization. Instead, the revised indictment states that it refers to a “patronage system” and a “culture of corruption” fueled by drug money.

Where the old indictment refers 32 times to Cartel de los Soles and describes Mr. Maduro as its leader, the new one mentions it twice and says that he, like his predecessor, President Hugo Chávez, participated in, perpetuated and protected this patronage system.

Jan 7, 1954: Georgetown–IBM experiment: The first public demonstration of a machine translation system is held in New York at the head office of IBM. The experiment involved completely automatic translation of 250 words and six grammar rules into English. The translation was carried out using an IBM 701 mainframe computer (launched in April 1953). The algorithm first translates Russian words into numerical codes, then performs the following case-analysis on each numerical code to choose between possible English word translations, reorder the English words, or omit some English words.

Quote:On the machine front linguist Léon Dostert at Georgetown University directed the first attempt, in which the IBM 701 electronic computer was used in 1954 to translate Russian into English. The project was eventually funded by the CIA, along with the National Science Foundation and U.S. military. In the Soviet Union, Aleksei Liapunov, a leading figure in cybernetics, discovered a scientific abstract about Dostert’s project and launched a competing English-to-Russian project, which by 1964 made the Soviet Union the leader in the field of machine translation.

NSA document: "The Longest Search: The Story of the Twenty-one-Year Pursuit of the Soviet Deep Space Data Link, and How it Was Helped by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence." Goldstone Radio Telescope.

Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex located near the ghost mining town of Goldstone in a remote location of the Mojave Desert. The Goldstone facility was conceived and, in 1958, construction began on the Pioneer Deep Space Station (DSS-11) antenna.

The Pioneer Station (DSS-11), a 26 meter polar mounted antenna was the first deep space antenna to be constructed at Goldstone. Completed Dec.1958 in time to support the Pioneer 3 mission, DSS-11 became the proto-type antenna for the Deep Space Network and went on to track a variety of NASA missions including all Pioneer spacecraft, the Echo Balloon projects, Ranger, Lunar Orbiter, Surveyor, Apollo, Helios, Mariner, Viking and Voyager. A Manned Space Flight wing was built at the Pioneer site to support the manned space flights of the Apollo program. DSS-11 was officially mothballed in 1981 and was declared a National Historic Monument as the first deep space antenna in the Deep Space Network (DSN) in 1985.

History of the Goldstone Antennas (1950s- 2000s)

The antennas of Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex are busy 24 hours a day bringing in data from missions to planets such as Mercury, Mars, and Saturn; as well as moons, comets, asteroids and even missions as far away as the edge of our solar system. These sensitive antennas are capable of retrieving signals as small as 1 billionth of 1 billionth of 1 watt…a mere whisper.

As a spacecraft travels outward from Earth, its signal steadily decreases in power so that when it reaches a DSN antenna from a typical outer planet encounter, it can be extremely low wattage- 20 billion times weaker than the power required for a digital wristwatch. This makes precision pointing of the antenna critical.

The antennas of Goldstone also are used for Solar System Radar (GSSR). Solar system radar is used to image planets, asteroids and comets. This provides scientists with a better understanding of planetary surface characteristics and the shape, speed and trajectory of objects such as asteroids and comets.

The heart of deep space communications at NASA is our Deep Space Network, or DSN, which is managed by JPL. This international array of antennas located at three complexes in California, Spain, and Australia allow us to communicate with our missions in “deep space,” which we at JPL define as from the Moon and beyond.

Having the appearance of a computerized desk, the System/32 was nicknamed the "Bionic Desk" after The Six Million Dollar Man, a popular U.S. TV program. The system was leased for around $1000/month.

The AEWL organisation ceased to exist in 1993 when it merged with the Seamen's Union of Australia to become the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). The AEWL was deregistered on 23 January 2006.

The computer was then stored in a space which became an office occupied by Flinders Ports Pty Ltd. Peter Dowset, and employee of Flinders Ports, recognised the machine's signioficance, and that it was still opperable, and offered it for donation to the Powerhouse Museum in 2010.

Quote:Q: So what do you think makes a good Twilight Zone?

A: Well, mystery is one thing, mysteriousness and the circumstances. Something odd about this man sitting there at the counter drinking his coffee. And it’s very stimulating to the imagination, because you wonder what’s about to happen.

Most of the time, you didn’t know what the outcome would be – as an audience, I mean. I can’t remember the jokes, but I remember this kind of shrill laugh that would come out of him.

But one of the reasons why it’s called the Golden Age was because television didn’t know where it was going. It was a new medium, and it wasn’t geared to the maximum audience. I mean, the very fact that they would go after Rod Serling – nowadays he’d be just a figure off-camera somewhere, in his little abattoir in the studio turning out plays. Writers, you know, are no longer very welcome on set.

Withdrawing the United States from International Organizations, Conventions, and Treaties that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States

I think international law has been dead since uh, a very long time. Who can even define it? The same for "rules-based international order". The UN? Trump is dumping the UN. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Syria went down practically overnight without a fight, we’re snatching Maduro (same regime change model), and seizing oil tankers. We’re back to "Might makes right" (hard power vs soft power) and if you don’t play the same game as everyone else, you lose. Age of Empires is now playing out in full view. Make a deal or get renditioned or bombed. China is doing what they want in the South China Sea. China pretends it respects "international law." Watch China make a move on Taiwan soon. Might makes right has always been the global law since the early days of Pax Americana in the Western hemisphere. History is told by the victors with a big stick.

Truth is that international law was always a sham, competing global powers sought to weaponize international systems against each other and leverage "legality" to advance their own goals.

Dark forces at play which we have no control over. All I can say is my internet better not go down or I'll be damn pissed. LOL.

Jan 9, 1918: Battle of Bear Valley of the American Indian Wars is widely considered the last official armed engagement of the American Indian Wars, a relatively small but significant skirmish between U.S. Army Buffalo Soldiers (10th Cavalry) and Yaqui people near the Arizona-Mexico border, marking the final encounter of that long conflict. This battle ocurred when a group of Yaquis opened fire on a group of 10th Cavalry soldiers in a tragic case of mistaken identity. It turned out the Yaqui had mistaken the Buffalo Soldiers for Mexican troops.

For the most part, armed American Indian resistance to the USGOV ended at the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890, and in the subsequent Drexel Mission Fight the next day.

Cowboys & Indians magazine

Quote:On January 8, 1918, a cattle rancher reported the body of a cow in the mountains that had been used to make sandals. The Army dispatched a reconnaissance patrol, who found the Yaqui not far from the post. The Army sent a force after the Indians, who had moved south. The cavalry kept up its pursuit toward the border.

After some time, they dismounted and moved ahead on foot, finding a hastily-abandoned Yaqui camp. The Indians were close by and knew they were being chased. As the soldiers advanced forward, they came under fire from the Yaqui, who had cleverly concealed their positions. From behind boulders and trees, the firefight began.

The Yaqui fired on the Americans freely, seeming to disappear behind every rock and bush. One of the reports from the battle said the Indians disappeared like “shadows.” But the Army continued moving forward in a skirmish line. As they moved forward, they pushed the Natives back and began to close in on them. Eventually, they had the Yaqui confined to a small area. Realizing their predicament, one of the Yaqui stood up to surrender. The captain called a cease-fire.

As the troop of cavalrymen moved to surround what turned out to be ten Yaqui, they realized this band of Indians had made a glorious stand to buy time for the rest of the tribe, some 20 or more, to escape. One Yaqui was killed, and nine were taken, prisoner. A federal court sentenced them to jail for 30 days rather than extradite them to Mexico, where they would have been executed.

Oregon Relaunches Its Only Container Terminal After Scheduled Closing

Dmitry Medvedev assessment the first week of 2026: "a civilizational catastrophe."

Quote:The year started turbulently.

1. First and foremost, its opening will be remembered for the kidnapping of Maduro. Of course, this is sheer thuggery and vileness — or, to put it more elegantly, a civilizational catastrophe in the sphere of international relations.

Today there are only two scenarios. Either the United States quietly releases the kidnapped Venezuelan president under some respectable pretext (the probability of this is minimal), or he becomes a new Latin American Mandela (most likely). In that case, his name will be inscribed in the tablets of South American history alongside Bolívar, Miranda, and Chávez.

And even if, out of sheer stubbornness, Trump does not pardon Maduro after some time, public pressure will almost certainly force Vance or another successor to do so.

Yes, oil is the key factor here. But even that will not be simple. What if the current Venezuelan authorities refuse to share it with the Americans in the long run? Will Trump really launch a ground operation? That would definitely require Congress — and it would be far bloodier than the brazen abduction of Maduro. And the Senate has just tightened the noose around Trump, restraining his militaristic frenzy. And does the current administration even need something like this? Highly doubtful.

And one more thing. I noted this immediately after the Americans’ grotesque orgy: after such actions, the American elites — both Republican and Democratic — should permanently shove their long tongues back into their rickety asses.

And simply acknowledge the legitimacy of Russia’s actions during the SMO.

2. Sanctions against Russia, announced by Trump and which he “hopes not to use.”

Everything here is clear, and there are no illusions. U.S. sanctions policy will continue regardless of circumstances. Russia will be pressured into compromises on security guarantees and territories that are absolutely unacceptable to us. And then the White House ringleader will be “forced” to impose them under the law of the old degenerate Russophobe Graham. Unpleasant. Nothing new. But we will endure this time as well.

3. The story with the tanker of the so-called shadow fleet.

It is obvious why it came under Russia’s “temporary flag”: under threat of seizure, it sought protection from illegal American sanctions.

However, the method chosen was not entirely appropriate. Yes, what happened is a clear violation of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. But it is worth recalling that the United States never ratified it. In this context, issuing a temporary permit to fly our flag to a vessel that, albeit illegally, is being pursued by our main geopolitical adversary — an adversary currently in an unstable state — was a move with predictable consequences.

Which, of course, does not diminish the indisputable fact that the actions of the brazen Americans constitute a criminal seizure of a civilian vessel. And the response to it should be entirely outside the framework of the Law of the Sea Convention. Especially since, as one prominent legal scholar noted, international law is not required at all.

In any case, one must bear in mind that international relations have turned into outright Bedlam since the start of the year. And we must behave accordingly: there are far too many violent lunatics around. With the understanding that such patients are never calmed by the gentle persuasion of kind psychiatrists. Only by orderlies with massive fists and an impassive expression. Because dangerous madmen require either a straitjacket — or a lifesaving injection of haloperidol. As happened last night in the west of the Bandera-run Ukrainian periphery."

Posted/translated from his Telegram account. You gotta love Medvedev's bluntness.

On that note there are many in gov't, on twitter, lefties on the street that could use a massive dose of Haloperidol.

Stirring the pot... will Iran regime go down this time?

It appears the angry protests are about severe economic hardship, inflation & currency collapse due to all the US sanctions tightening the noose.

It is fascinating how they were all unified last June after the Israel/US bombings and just 6 months later they completely flipped. It seems Iranians are no different than Americans, British, Europeans; many can be easily manipulated especially when it comes to economic downturn. I doubt that Reza Pahlavi has much support in Iran, I'm sure he does with US State Dept and British MI6, but the forces at play will use literally anyone to garner external support to keep the pressure squeeze going until a collapse of some sort. Iran's supreme leader is 85 so I think his time is coming to an end.

Next ruler...? Doubtful, but 2026 is cooking to be a shock 'n awe year and anything can happen! All wild conspiracies & predictions (no matter how crazy) are on the table.

The US stands alone in dismissing the globalist hoax of climate change as a existential threat.

Yep, they barely lost the gambit, I mean the globalists, who intended to use "climate change" aka, global warming, as a method to institute global taxation and therefore a utopian one world government. It will take a while for all the lemmings to realize the game is up. Loser: all the NGO’s and academics who are used to easy money to peddle a weak case. Trump just ditched the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and many other UN NGOs. Once the USA pulls out, shutsdown the money train, others will follow. Same for NATO if the US leaves.

At some point in the near future, conflicts said to be about oil will be labelled "climate wars" and anybody killed in them will be added to the tally of "climate change-related deaths".

That way, Climate Change can be said to be an "international security crisis", just like they called it an "international public health issue" in 2020-22.

Quote:Where Americans Choose to Move and Where They Leave

Domestic Migration from 2020 to 2024

Patterns of domestic migration—where people who already live in America choose to move—reveals a lot about where people do or don’t want to live. Or, framed differently, where they can and can’t afford to. This map shows the cumulative domestic migration of each US county, from 2020 to 2024.

The darkest green color shows places where the (net) number of people who’ve moved in since 2020 is equal to 10% or more of the population in 2020. The darkest purple color shows the reverse. In those counties the net number of people who’ve moved out is equal to 10% of the 2020 population. This only includes people who moved from one place in the United States to another, not people who moved into or out of the country.

Because this map shows net migration, a place where a roughly equal number of people move in and out—like a college town—won’t feature prominently.

There are six times as many dark green counties as dark purple ones. A few counties are experiencing intense in-migration, while a lot of counties are seeing a small out-migration.

Some of the patterns seem to follow state boundaries, but more commonly they reflect urban agglomerations or ecological regions.

In fact, I was surprised by the extent to which certain ecological regions correspond to the patterns on this map. The next version of the map shows a few of the patterns that most stood out to me. I highlighted certain regions, like the Ozarks, by identifying the counties included in specific EPA Level III ecoregions. (Follow that link to see official maps of Level I, II, III, and IV ecoregions. They are fascinating).

...

The biggest hotspots for domestic movers are in the American South. Many of these cross state lines in ways that follow ecoregions.
The Piedmont / Southern Appalachia

One such region covers portions of the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and nearly all of Tennessee. The sprawling area (340 counties) basically corresponds to the ecoregion comprising Appalachia south of Virginia (the Blue Ridge Mountains, Southwestern Appalachians, Ridge and Valley) along with the plateaus to their east (the Piedmont) and west (the Interior Plateau). 974,000 more Americans moved into this region than out of it from 2020 to 2024, equal to 3.3% of the 2020 population.

...

Some Losers

Most of the places with more out-movers than in-movers only lost a very small fraction of their population. But a few regions stand out with more serious losses.
The Lower Mississippi

The Mississippi Alluvial Plain extends from the river’s confluence with the Ohio in southern Illinois all the way to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. Nearly all of these 58 counties lose more movers than they gain. In total, the region lost 116,000 people, or 5.0% of its population to net domestic migration from 2020 to 2024. Losses were even more severe (proportionally speaking) in the core of the region, the Mississippi Delta.

California

Finally, any discussion of net migration has to mention the county’s most populous state: California. From 2020 to 2024, 1.47 million more people moved from California to elsewhere in the United States than from a different state into California. That outflow is equal to 3.7% of the state’s 2020 population.

Franz Kafka was a major German-language fiction writer of the 20th century, known for his unique style. His works often explore themes of alienation, existential anxiety, and oppressive bureaucracy, which led to the term "Kafkaesque" entering the lexicon. Examples include instances in which bureaucracies overpower people, often in a surreal, nightmarish milieu that evokes feelings of senselessness, disorientation, and helplessness. Characters in a Kafkaesque setting often lack a clear course of action to escape a labyrinthine situation. In more modern times the term has transcended the literary realm to apply to real-life occurrences and situations that are incomprehensibly complex, bizarre, or illogical. Like we been watching the past year.

Examples in film are the sci-fi noir, Dark City (1998), TV series The Prisoner and The Twilight Zone.

Kafka never achieved widespread success in his lifetime and requested that his friend Max Brod destroy his writings after his death, but Brod published them instead. He died of tuberculosis in 1924 at the age of 40.

In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time, ~2.5 million, it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history. It remains the all-time best-selling American title and is still in print today.

Wonderful sketch of "teeth painlessly extracted by steam power" adorning an envelope addressed to a certain Dr J. Chapman of Totton, Southampton, and dated 1894. Was it sent in the mail like this?

Quote:This wonderful sketch of "teeth painlessly extracted by steam power" appears on an envelope addressed to a certain Dr J. Chapman of Totton, Southampton. As to whether he is the creator of the drawing also (or indeed someone in his household), the jury is out -- though the idea that the envelope made its way through the Victorian postal system so adorned is rather a nice thought. There seem to be arguments either way. Looking closely one can see that the ink from the drawing overlays the stamp in the left hand corner, which would imply it made its way onto the envelope after postage (if the late 19th-century mailing process was anything like today's), though mysteriously also part of the address (the "D" of Dr) appears to overlay the stamp. All quite confusing. Also, are there unnatural gaps between the "m" and "a" of "Chapman", and between the "c" and "o" of "Beaconsfield", where the pulley runs, and so implying the address was written around the drawing? Also, is the drawing signed "C. E. H." to the bottom left? If so, does that imply someone other than Chapman? Someone else in his house-hold? The sender of the letter? "Chapman's Envelope Handiwork"?

If an expert on Victorian postal systems, or indeed, a handwriting expert (are the address and caption to the drawing done by the same hand?), can help out all would love to your ideas in the comments. Likewise regarding who this Dr J. Chapman was. We tried to find out a bit more about him, but alas to no avail. There's an outside chance it could be physician and publisher John Chapman (1821–1894) famous for running the influential radical journal the Westminster Review (which provided an important platform for ideas on evolution), and whose assistant, was Mary Ann Evans (AKA George Eliot). It appears this Chapman did have one loose link to Southampton, in that he wrote to the Times in 1866 to describe his use of ice packs to treat cholera patients in the city.

A British cartoon from Dec 5, 1945 depicting Iran (as a Persian cat on a Persian carpet) with a British lion, an American eagle and a Russian bear hovering over it.

At that time, Iran had been occupied for four years and divided between the USSR and Great Britain as a result of Operation Accord (1941). Due to Iran's lack of independence and subordination to the two allied powers, it became the venue for the Tehran Conference in 1943, the first in World War II.

A week after the cartoon was published, the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was proclaimed in northern Iran. About a month later, the Kurdistan Republic (Mehabad Republic) emerged in the northwest of the country. Both were created with the support of the USSR — and both collapsed after it left Iran.

The British Empire completed its withdrawal from Iranian territory in March 1946, and the Soviet Union in May 1946.

Jan 10, 1946: The United States Army Signal Corps successfully conducts Project Diana (named for the Roman moon goddess), bouncing radio waves off the Moon and receiving the reflected signals.

Quote:Project Diana demonstrated the feasibility of using the Moon as a passive reflector to transmit radio signals from one point on the Earth to the other, around the curve of the Earth. This Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) or "moonbounce" path has been used in a few communication systems. One of the first was the secret US military espionage PAMOR (Passive Moon Relay) program in 1950, which sought to eavesdrop on Soviet Russian military radio communication by picking up stray signals reflected from the Moon. The return signals were extremely faint, and the US began secret construction of the largest parabolic antenna in the world at Sugar Grove, West Virginia, until the project was abandoned in 1962 as too expensive. A more successful spinoff was the US Navy Communication Moon Relay or Operation Moonbounce communication system, which used the EME path for US military communication. In January, 1960 the system was inaugurated with a lunar relay link between Hawaii and Washington DC. Moonbounce communication was abandoned by the military with the advent of communications satellites in the early 1960s. Since then it has been used by amateur radio operators.

Runaway (1984). "It is the future". 1991 to be precise.

Gene Simmons is the rogue scientist turning robots against humans and Tom Selleck is the haunted cop tracking him down, in this underrated Michael Crichton techno thriller. The film accurately predicts domestic robots, video mail, social media, the Internet, voice-activated computers, biometric security (retinal identification), camera drones, tablet PCs, wireless headsets, and that police officers would use semi-automatic pistols as sidearms (in 1984, most police officers used revolvers).

Gene Simmons, in his book "Sex Money Kiss", said that director Michael Crichton's casting of him was based primarily on an audition where Crichton asked Simmons to stare at him for about a minute without making any facial expressions. Apparently, Crichton decided that Simmons looked menacing enough and cast him for the role of Luther.

Jan 14, 1952: NBC's long-running morning news program Today (@TODAYshow) debuts, with host Dave Garroway [1913-1982]. The Today show was the first of its kind—a mix of hard news and lifestyle meant to accompany your morning coffee. It turned the living room into a classroom and the news into a companion.

Major Donald E. Keyhoe debates Lt. Col. Lawrence J. Tacker on the Today show, hosted by Dave Garroway. Tacker says he wrote the book Flying Saucers and the US Air Force because “I felt the Air Force was being set upon by Maj. Keyhoe, NICAP, and other hobby groups who believe in spaceships as an act of pure faith.” Keyhoe repeatedly challenges Tacker, whose statements ring hollow, and even Garroway asks Tacker pointed questions and coolly notes Tacker’s apparent ignorance of basic physics. The show generates numerous phone calls and letters to NBC, most of them critical of the Air Force.

Major Donald E. Keyhoe and Lt. Col. Lawrence Tacker, USAF, appeared on the Dave Garroway TV Show on Dec 5, 1960 to discuss the UFO phenomena. Listen from 26:30 on Archive.org.

Two audio recordings- Lt. Col. Lawrence Tacker Interview, UFOs In The Air Force, December 4, 1960 and the Garroway Show Dec 5, 1960:

Wiki snippet:

Quote:In 1981, Garroway underwent open-heart surgery, as a result of which he contracted a staph infection. On January 14, 1982, Today broadcast its 30th-anniversary special, which featured all of the important living, former, and current staff members. Garroway, who had recently undergone drug rehabilitation for an amphetamine addiction, appeared to be cheerful and in good spirits during the show. He also indicated that he would be present for the show's 35th anniversary in 1987.

A few months later, however, Garroway began suffering complications from the infection he had contracted during surgery. He spent some weeks in and out of hospitals and had an in-home nurse tending to him. On July 21, he was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound at his Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, home. No suicide note was found and Garroway's nurse did not recall him being unusually depressed in the final day of his life. Garroway's son Michael said that his father had been experiencing complications from his heart operation and he had "unfortunately succumbed to the traumatic effects of his illness". In addition, he was extremely depressed at his inability to resurrect a TV career, saying to friends and family "I'm old hat, old news. Nobody wants old Dave anymore". His family held a private graveside service for him in Philadelphia on July 28.

Because of Garroway's dedication to the cause of mental health, his third wife, Sarah, helped establish the Dave Garroway Laboratory for the Study of Depression at the University of Pennsylvania.

January 15, 1759: The British museum officially opened to the public from its location in Montague House.

The 1753 Act purchased this for the public which, along with the Cotton, Harley and Royal Libraries, became a new kind of public institution, called the British Museum. Sloane had used developing global networks created by European imperial expansion to collect these materials and financed the purchases with income partly derived from enslaved labour on Jamaican sugar plantations.

Sir Hans Sloane, physician, scientist, and President of the Royal Society, amassed a huge collection of more than 80,000 'natural and artificial rarities' with a vast library of over 40,000 books and manuscripts, and 32,000 coins and medals. Over the next 260 years, the museum's wide-ranging collections have grown to about eight million objects covering two million years of human history. In 2023, the museum received 5,820,860 visitors and was the most visited attraction in the United Kingdom.

Radford, the chairman at the time, stated in a memorandum to Defense Secretary Charles W. Wilson that in 1955 the military chiefs voiced their view “emphasizing the strategic importance of Greenland and the military advantage to the United States of acquiring title to the area.”

"The U.S. military requirements in Greenland can be expected to increase in the future".

"Further, Greenland will probably assume even greater strategic significance with the advent of operational intercontinental ballistic missiles, not only as a likely area for basing elements of a system to defend against such weapons, but as a potential area for installing offensive missile units."
