My son wants to drink diet soda daily - ancientlight - 03-04-2026

Hi all.

So my son(14) , says that a dail diet soda is perfectlly fine to drink , that there's no long-term health consequences.
I'm not sure I agree. I've tried to keep his soda consumption to a minimum (except when it's Ollipop) .

So is it okay to drink a can of diet soda a day?
Are there any trustworthy sources that say it's fine etc?

Thanks!

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to say all soda is poison, especially diet soda.

Diet soda with sweetened with Aspertame isn't great and there is plenty of info out there for doing your own research. My personal opinion, based on absolutely nothing is that Zero Sugar soda sweetened with sucralose is somewhat better and I prefer the taste.

I drink a Coke Zero Sugar almost every day or every other day.

At least he's not trying to convince you a daily beer is perfectly fine to drink.

I think some people over react to this kind of thing. If they are worried about harmful chemicals, they should just stop eating food because according to California, everything we eat is poison in some way. Ollipop has 2 -5 grams of sugar. Diet soda has none and according to this study, he'd have to drink 21 cans per day to get enough Aspartame to hurt him.

We're talking one a day, not a 6 pack. If you really want to worry about something, worry about what is in his school lunch.

The citric acid levels in diet soda are in low concentrations, but if he doesn't rinse his mouth with water after drinking the soda frequently he is inviting tooth enamel erosion over time, this also applies to drinking coffee, fruit juice, sports drinks, flavored sparking water and/or any other acidic drinks.

"Direct acid attack: Hydrogen ions (H⁺) from citric acid lower the pH in the mouth, protonating phosphate and carbonate groups in the enamel’s hydroxyapatite structure. This weakens the crystal lattice and leads to demineralization, especially when pH drops below 5.5—the critical threshold for enamel dissolution.

  • Chelation: The citrate ion binds to calcium ions in enamel, actively pulling them out of the mineral structure. This enhances erosion beyond what low pH alone would cause, making citric acid more damaging than other acids of similar strength."

"Diet Sodas: Typically have a pH between 3.0 and 3.2, with some (like Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi) measuring around 3.10 and 3.02, respectively.  These are acidic due to phosphoric acid and carbonation, which generate carbonic acid.  Despite having no sugar, their high acidity can still erode tooth enamel over time." (LLM source comparing acidity between diet soda vs ginger ale)

Having said that, my daughter just informed me that they can now regrow enamel on teeth but it's not yet available to the public. Also I just noticed you said your son is 14 years old - that age has all kids trying to flex their foothold into adulthood while still having one toe in the waters of still being a dependent child - I think the best course of action is for both of you to discuss the negative health effects and come to a middle ground, perhaps with him simply rinsing his mouth with water after drinking acidic drinks.

Some people also use regular non-diet and diet soda to clean their toilet bowls because soda has other acid compounds, in addition to citric acid, which can dissolve minerals, rust etc. So imagine what it does to one's stomach lining over time as well.

There are some health issues related to diet pop, but if you just drink one occassionally, I do not think it will be too much of an issue for the majority of people.

From my studies on the fake no calorie sweeteners, I am not fond of having it daily.  To give an example, I can drink a diet soda to control my epilepsy....Aspartame does have some similar properties to asparaganes in asparagus to help control my seizure risk.  I am not fond of the taste of any sodas though.  Now the phosphoric acid in coke, even diet coke, can help break apart bezoars in the digestive tract of people, and I do occasionally have about twenty ounces of coke to accomplish cleaning out my intestines....it works for me pretty well.  So I have one about every two weeks even though I do not like the taste of sweet sodas or even the diet ones.

any soda pop has some health problems associated with it.  they are all highly processed chemistries

I  cannot say that the boy will be negatively effected health wise from drinking diet sodas, some people can drink them and others can't....if you genetically have the ability to make certain enzymes at proper amounts, then you can drink the diet sodas without too much long term problems.

I started taking a small L-glutamine supplement with a multimineral containing molybdenum years ago now, the L-glutamine took away my craving for sweets and I felt better.  I knew the properties of L-glutamine helping the gut and it's effect on taking away sore joints and stuff, but never realized it would make me dislike sugar and sugar substitues like it did....which caused me to start loosing weight, some from the inflammation in the joints going down and some because the swelling went down everywhere because inflammation went down.  It is not a miracle supplement, it just helps.  If I ate a lot of meat, I might not need it so much.  The pain in the joints went down because it balances the glutamine to glutamate in the synapses.  once that pain went away I could also do more which helped me to lose weight too.  I just take a small five hundred mg a day pill and it helps, like anything, too much is also not good.  If you have had an injury, glutamine helps to help the white blood cells fix issues too.  It is used as fuel by them.  Moderation is important though, not too much in supplements except if you get run down from injuries temporarily.

I do not know if that will help your son though, just putting this information out there because it helps some people to get better.  I have not seemed to have any side effects from the small dose daily, and I usually buy the cheaper versions, some of them are expensive and I have not seen any benefit from buying the more expensive ones I had tried over the cheaper NOW brand I am using
