It's just to keep us , the masses, divided and preoccupied with politics , instead of what the 1% are really up to.
I'd say you're probably right. I've been working on a philosophy of a new way of looking at the "Left-Right" paradigm that accounts for that. I can drop a few hints here.
There isn't really any "Left" or "Right" in the halls of power - only out here amongst us peons on the streets.
Those who actually wield the power and call the shots will never, ever let either the Right or the Left actually get any power - that would be a threat to the power already vested in the Movers and Shakers.
They do, however, promote vilification of the Right by the Left, and vice-versa. It's a way of keeping us at each other's throats and distracted from those who are really at the top, and what they're up to.
Consider for a moment - and this was pointed out to me by Antifa, of all folks - what is it that every single application of communism and socialism in the real world have ended up as? Authoritarian totalitarianism - the same thing that the Left, as exemplified by Antifa, claims is "Right wing".
How can they be different if they are the same exact thing? How is the way every single "Right wing" or "Left wing" government eventually shakes out materially different from the age-old feudal system? Whether you'r a slave on a "Left wing" communist collective farm or a cog in the wheel of a "right wing" capitalist machine, how is your lot any different at all from a medieval peasant on the estate of a baron? I mean in reality, not theory. Theories are pretty, but they never work out in reality the way they are supposed to, in theory. People never really get the bill of goods they've been sold.
So, if you follow far enough up the chain of command on the Left, you will find... oligarchs. people who give no damns at all for either the right or the left, except for how those terms and people can be useful to the oligarchs.
It's an unfortunate fact that the same thing prevails for the Right as well.
The hell of it is, if you follow both those trails far enough, you end up at the same damned estate. They are both owned and operated by the same damned people, and those people are not going to give up their power to us peons, no matter what our political philosophy is. They don't care about politics. They only care about raw power and control.
They leave the politics to us peons, as owned and directed by them. If one side gets a little too strong, it gets slapped back by the other as the oligarchs increase support to the opposition. When that side gets too powerful, then they swing the pendulum in the other direction for a while. The goal is to prevent either side from getting a toe hold on any real power.
Wash, rinse, repeat. Meanwhile, those at the top are always inventing new and improved ways to extract blood, sweat, tears, and money from us peons to amass to themselves. lately, it's been "carbon credits", "crypto currency", "digital ID", and such like... but what is next, once those have been exhausted? Don't worry - they'll think of something. "Redistribution of wealth" is a real thing, but it never goes in the direction the Left hopes, or the Right fears. It only ever goes straight to the top, bypassing all us little peons despite the grandiose promises made to us if we will only "assist in the struggle to free all".
Using Mamdani as an example, since he's been the latest "lookey here!" target for the peons on the "Right" - yes, he is a communist or "Leftist". No, he's no less of a peon than any of the rest of us - his strings are being pulled the same as everyone else's. No, he will never, ever, get the "worker's paradise" utopia he's been sold. He might get the things he claims to want, but once he gets them, he'll find he didn't really want THAT, since all wealth and power will bypass him too, on it's way up the redistribution ladder to the Top Dawgs. His paradise will turn into Perdition, as it always has.
The most he can hope for is his dacha on the Black Sea coast as payment for being a loyal peon to his Masters and betraying the rest of the peons who misplaced their trust in him so that they could be fleeced and sucked dry like any other sheep.. We know he is just another peon because he is playing politics, like all the other peons. The folks at the top don't concern themselves with politics, or "Left" and "Right". They only concern themselves with how to keep the peons embroiled in that mess, while they are skimming all the cream off the top - whichever "side" it comes from - for themselves.
Using the much maligned Rothschilds as another example, they don't play politics. They make loans to both sides of every conflict, without favor or distinction. Politics is not their goal, power and money are... and that is exactly what they get by eschewing playing politics and being equal-opportunity opportunists.
All of this is nothing new. It's been the standard ever since humans invented agriculture, started building sedentary cities, and then had enough leisure time to actually start contemplating war so they could fleece all their neighbors of their hard earned goods.
It is the standard of "civilization".
