Thinking about how the founder of the Nation of Islam was a guy who used 58 different aliases, randomly showed up in Detroit one day and started preaching to the black population, then disappeared. He's never been found and almost nothing is known about his real identity. It's quite a trip how much influence on American culture this random unknown guy had and of course continues to this day. Wallace Fard Muhammad


Some research on this quack shows Fard's relationship with the Japanese and Jehovah's Witnesses:

While the content of the blackboard may have evolved over time, the blackboard itself was introduced by the enigmatic founder of the NOI, W.D. Fard. He drew the American flag and the NOI flag on it with coloured chalk during a speech to compare the two.[1] Fard styled himself as a “professor”[2] [3] and used a variety of resources in teaching his followers. The words on the blackboard were added by Elijah Muhammad, the purported Messenger and Apostle of W.D. Fard, sometime after Elijah Muhammad left prison in 1946.

According to FBI transcriptions of Elijah Muhammad’s sermons, he frequently taught that the “Japanese will slaughter the white man.”[44] Japan was a part of this Asiatic nation, and the Japanese army and navy were “only waiting on the word” of Fard to destroy the devil.[45] Fard taught that “our Asiatic brothers” designed and built the “Mother Plane” – a UFO-like airship that would release smaller ships to drop poison bombs on the United States.[46] Elijah Muhammad said that the Mother Plane’s bombs were the same type that gave the Earth its mountains, and that they would dig one mile deep into the Earth.

This is where Fard’s Armageddon diverges from Rutherford’s. For Fard, the War of Armageddon was a literal war between the Asiatic world and the white world. It was not the divine chastisement of a “spook God” that didn’t exist. As Elijah Muhammad said of Fard, “He did not say, ‘I or Allah will do this and that,’ but I noticed him carefully saying, ‘We do this or that.’”[49] In other words, “we” – the God, the Muslims, Black people, Japan, the Asiatic world – would bring down the judgment on white America. The feared Mother Plane was not an otherworldly ship, but one built by mortal hands in Japan. Of course, despite Japan’s technological output, we know of no such airship in reality.

The War of Armageddon: The NOI, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Imperial Japan

W.D. Fard, the man venerated as “God in Person” by the African American Nation of Islam (NOI), was an enigmatic teacher that was active in Detroit and Chicago between 1930 and 1934. The Supreme Wisdom is often memorized verbatim by NOI adherents, including by children at the NOI’s University of Islam schools.

One of the documents in The Supreme Wisdom is called “Actual Facts”, which provides numerical figures for the square mileage, circumference, and diameter of the Earth, as well as the square mileage of land, water, hills and mountains, islands, and deserts. As a modern and quasi-naturalistic religion, the NOI puts some emphasis on incorporating the empirical sciences in their teachings. “Islam is Mathematics”, The Supreme Wisdom says.[3] White people are said to be the product of a scientist using a form of eugenics.[4] The War of Armageddon would be brought about by a UFO-like Mother Plane built in Japan.[5] The holy scriptures were written by a council of scientists.[6] As elaborated by Dr. Edward E. Curtis, “the Nation of Islam emphasized scientific, material, and empirical over spiritual and supernatural understandings of religion.”[7]

But where did W.D. Fard get his figures from in his “Actual Facts”? For the NOI, Fard is God in Person, and “he stood and measured the earth” (Habakkuk 3:6).[8] In the earlier quotation, Farrakhan suggested that white scientists’ estimation of the Earth’s measurements is gradually getting closer to the miraculous measurements of The Supreme Wisdom.

However, Fard was also a resourceful man: he used both the Bible and the Quran, he assigned 104 books from the Library of Congress[9] (or 150 books) to Elijah Muhammad,[10] and he taught from Breasted James Henry’s The Conquest of Civilization[11] and Judge Rutherford’s Deliverance!.[12] It is thus likely that he supplemented his scientific teachings with published works as well.

As it turns out, The World Almanac and Book of Facts, a popular reference work published every year since 1886, is probably the source of Fard’s “Actual Facts”. The almanac was used by U.S. presidents Calvin Coolidge, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton.[13] Over the years, the almanac became a household name and has been featured in several Hollywood films and television appearances.[14]

Introduction

W.D. Fard, the founder of the Nation of Islam, is a fascinating figure. Mysterious, intriguing, and enigmatic, his magnetic personality and revolutionary rhetoric stupefied and mystified the black people of Detroit during the depth of the Great Depression. So mind-blowing was the message that he delivered between July 4, 1930, and May of 1934, that he was proclaimed a prophet. In fact, some of his followers were so edified by his teachings that he was deified. Not only did he proclaim to be the Messiah of the Christians and the Mahdi of the Muslims but he proclaimed to be Almighty Allah. In fact, in a stunning and audacious speech, he proclaimed “I am God Himself.”

So astonishing are his teachings that even those who do not believe in him are drawn to him. They wonder who he was, where he came from, what became of him, and what were the sources of his captivating and mind-baffling teachings. At first, W.D. Fard attracted his audience by using the Bible, a book that was familiar to them. Later, he introduced the Qurʾan in both Arabic and English. He also produced two texts, Teaching for the Lost Found Nation of Islam in a Mathematical Way, and the Secret Ritual of the Nation of Islam. Both are found in The Supreme Wisdom Lessons.

W.D. Fard also claimed to have authored a work titled Five Guiding Principles, under the name W.D. Feraud, which was supposedly in the collection of the Library of Congress, but has never been located. Authorship of the work was also claimed by Satokata Takahashi (born Naka Nakane, 1870-1945) who was associated with the ultranationalist Black Dragon Society and the Pacific Movement of the Eastern World (PMEW) which presented Japan as the champion of people of color. Perhaps it was originally co-authored by both men while working for the Society for the Development of Our Own. Instead of a book, it appears to have been a one-page tract, the content of which is available and known.

Of all the works associated with W.D. Fard, the most captivating of all was The Bible of Islamism, which was found among his personal belongings when he was detained by the police in Detroit in 1932. As the Detroit Free Press reported,

Quote:On page 354 of the “Bible” is the following quotation, which was underlined, and which Farad claimed he used as part of his teachings —  “God is a liar. Ignore Him and do away with those who advocate His cause.” He stated that this was a favorite passage of his and that he used it often in his teachings.

Like the Five Guiding Principles, notes Patrick C. Bowen, no scholar or member of the Nation of Islam has publicly claimed to have seen The Bible of Islamism “and there is no other known mention of it in any additional press report, government document, or even in any publicly available NOI materials.” Michael Muhammad Knight (b. 1977) went as far as to claim that “we have no access to this Bible of Islamism or evidence beyond police claims in The Detroit Free Press that it ever existed.” None since now, of course, since I have found it.

Like other as-yet unidentified books used by Fard, Bowen suggested that The Bible of Islamism was self-published in a small run. After all, “since, in 1932, Fard asserted that he was working on a commission basis for a printing company, these various books would have been likely printed by his employer and therefore Fard would have had the power to keep the number of copies very small.” This is not the case, at least as concerns The Bible of Islamism, a secret that was hiding in plain sight.
 
The Quest for the Holy Scripture

Since I had a title, The Bible of Islamism, a citation, “God is a liar,” and a page number, I decided to do some detective work. I searched for “Bible of Islamism.” I located sources that described the Qurʾan as the “Bible of Islam.” I searched for “God is a liar,” “God is liar,” and variants such as “Lord is a liar” and found all kinds of results. They were virtually all rhetorical questions, accusations of apostasy, or citations of Satan used in dialogues. I went through many of them monotonously. While I found the phrase “God is a liar,” I could not find the rest of it, namely, “Ignore Him and do away with those who advocate His cause.” Finally, I found it, but the page did not match. It appeared on different pages, including page 275, in various editions. What is more, the original context was completely different from the manner in which it was presented by the police and the press. Finally, I checked various editions of the book and found one in which the citation was found precisely on page 264. Was it a Qurʾan? A compilation of Sacred Writings from the East? Some sort of Satanic text? As I explained in Finding W.D. Fard: Unveiling the Identity of the Founder of the Nation of Islam,

Quote:The document found among Fard’s effects was clearly not the Muslim Holy Book. Instead of The Bible of Islamism, it could more appropriately be called the Bible of Satanism for the citation in question is a basic diabolical belief. Obtaining a copy of this book,… would be invaluable to all researchers. Who authored it? Why was Fard using it? Was it Fard himself who penned his own pseudo-Qurʾan as Noble Drew Ali had done with his Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple…? “If Allah is a liar,” asks Charles Upton, “does that mean that Fard is also a liar, since Fard is Allah?” Patrick Bowen considers an even more sinister scenario, one in which W.D. Fard was possibly “involved with Aleister Crowley’s Masonry-derived Ordo Templi Orientis.”

“Indeed,” writes Bowen, “the known contents of Fard’s Bible of Islamism seem to have a Crowley ring to them.” So, what was the thick hardcover tome with a dark cover which W.D. Fard was photographed with while in police custody in Detroit in 1932? Be prepared to be baffled.

The Bible of Islamism Identified

The book that W.D. Fard presented as The Bible of Islamism, which he relied upon for inspiration and citation when preaching at lecture halls, is actually titled Deliverance!, not the “squeal like a pig” Deliverance (1972), but the work of Joseph Franklin Rutherford (1869-1942), the second president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. Known also as Judge Rutherford, this American religious leader played a primary role in the organization of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and their doctrinal development. In fact, he gave that very name to the group, which emerged from the Bible Student movement founded by Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916), in 1931. The Jehovah Witnesses, one would be well to remember, are not Muslims, but rather a millenarian restorationist Christian denomination with nontrinitarian beliefs.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the police department revealed that page 354 of The Bible of Islamism contained the quote: “’God is a liar. Ignore Him and do away with those who advocate His cause.’ He stated that this was a favorite passage of his and that he used it often in his teachings.” Actually, the citation is found on page 264. A mistake was made by the police department or the Detroit Free Press. Alternatively, a typo was made when transcribing the original newspaper article into digital format. The original quote, found in the 1926 edition of Deliverance!, reads:

Quote:The “Dragon,” the Devil and his organization, by its efforts to destroy the seed of promise, boastfully says: “God is a liar and his Word is unreliable. Ignore him, and away with those who advocate his cause!” [The bold print, which I have provided, represents the decontextualized segments cited in the police report completed by Detectives Oscar Berry and Charles Snyder from the Homicide Squad]

Millions of copies of Deliverance! were printed and distributed in numerous editions. The one photographed with W.D. Fard was printed in 1926, and it has Deliverance! in yellow or gold at the top. The cover is dark blue or black and is embossed. In size, shape, and color, it is very much the same book. The dimensions match. The police department or the Detroit Free Press truncated the citation in question to give it a diabolic sense. If this were done by the newspaper, it would be yellow journalism at its finest. The paper had been running stories about black Muslims and human sacrifice. Misrepresenting the quotation, and attributing it to The Bible of Islamism, was intended to demonize W.D. Fard and his followers, denigrate black people, undermine Islam, shock readers, and increase sales. It was deceitful, dishonest, and despicable. “CAN THE DEVIL FOOL A MUSLIM?” asked W.D. Fard in The Supreme Wisdom Lessons. “NOT NOWADAYS.” As Bowen notes, “the Tribune-Independent, Detroit’s main black newspaper” denounced the fact that the Nation of Islam was being persecuted because of white America’s loathing of blacks and Muslims.

If something as benign as the citation in question was distorted to such a point, turning its meaning upside down, one can only imagine how much the media twisted and transmogrified the facts surrounding the so-called Voodoo Murders, the Nation of Islam, and W.D. Fard. In retrospect, it was naïve to believe the claims of the Police Department regarding The Bible of Islamism and its content and its coverage by the Detroit Free Press. All of the reporting was biased and prejudiced. The articles in question speak repeatedly of “Voodoo Murders,” “Voodoo Chieftain,” “Voodoo Slayer,” “voodoo sect,” “Voodoo beliefs,” “fear of Voodoo,” “voodoo king,” “GRIP OF VOODOO IN THE CITY,” “voodooism,” “VOODOOISM’S GRIP,” “the sinister influence of voodooism,” “VOODOO KING,” “Voodoo-Moslem hybrid cult,” “weird rites,” “voodoo cult,” “voodoo gathering,” VOODOO VICTIM,” “murders on rude altars devoted to the mad cult of voodoo and elements of ‘Islamism,’” “menacing voodoo cult,” “voodoo sacrifice,” “weird charlatans of voodooism,”  “voodooism is an extremely dangerous cult,” “voodoo net,” and “cult rituals.” It speaks repeatedly of chilling “human sacrifice” to the “jungle gods” of “Islam.”

The Allah Temple of Islam is depicted as a “cult” over a hundred times. It is labelled as a “Negro cult,” a “jungle cult,” “ominous cult,” a “menacing cult,” a “sinister cult,” a “mad cult,” and a “vicious cult” with “strange Islamic symbols and titles” that is “savage and barbarous.” It is depicted as a “Voodoo-Moslem hybrid cult.” The articles speak of “cult members,” “cult killer,” and “cult slayer.” They are referred to as “Mohamedans” whose “Mohammeddanism exists only in meaningless and impressive mixture of Allahs, Mohamets, and other Mohammedan incantations.”

The articles speak of “High priestesses and priests clad in pseudo-Oriental costumes” who prey on the “superstitions and susceptibility of Negroes” whom they have robbed of their savings. The leaders of the Allah Temple of Islam are described as “ringleaders.” The articles describe Wallace D. Fard as an “Oriental fakir” and an “Arabian” who taught Negroes that they were “Turkish.”  They cite a report from the Psychopathic Ward of Receiving Hospital which claims that he suffered from “delusions that he is a divinity.” The articles claim Robert Harris professed to be the “King of Islam,” that Ugan Ali claimed to be the “God of the Asiatic Nation” and “God of the Asiatics,” and that Wallace D. Farad professed to be the “supreme being on earth.” And it goes on and on and one. The purpose of the Detroit Police Department and the Detroit Free Press was to demonize and discredit W.D. Fard and the early Nation of Islam. The police were very clear that they viewed the spread of “Islamism” among blacks as a danger. Since the content of these articles is overwhelmingly false, none of the information should be treated as factual unless it is verified by other sources.

In light of journalist dishonesty, the question begs to be asked: did W.D. Fard actually identify the book in question as The Bible of Islamism or was this a false attribution on the part of the police department and the Detroit Free Press? One could only presume that the police officers and the journalists could read. The book’s title was emblazoned in large print: DELIVERANCE! Its author was readily identified in the front matter. Unlike the Nation of Islam, which numbered in the thousands at the time, there were approximately one hundred thousand Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1932. Are we to believe that police officers and journalists could not tell the difference between The Bible of Islamism, some sort of Muslim scripture, and Deliverance!, a millenarian Christian work?

Why did W.D. Fard read and cite Judge Rutherford’s Deliverance? Only because it is “a vivid description of the divine plan outlining God’s progressive steps against evil and showing the final overthrow of the devil and all of his wicked institutions.” It basically explains how every leader since ancient times was a devil. It denounces the government of devils, the organized religions of devils, the politics of devils, and the economic system of devils. In fact, Rutherford typically accused anyone who disagreed with him of being the devil. He shared the same absolutist, black or white, psychological, and spiritual profile as W.D. Fard.

As Elijah Muhammad acknowledged, W.D. Fard “knew the Bible better than any of the Christian-bred Negroes.” Louis Lomax also wrote that “Fard was … well versed in the Bible and … used it as a textbook.” He also reported that he preached in the style of a Southern Baptist preacher. According to the New York Times, Judge Rutherford “had a reputation as an eloquent, forceful, speaker.” Fard was certainly inspired by other Christian preachers; however, Rutherford was most certainly one of them. Cedric Muhammad, an economist, scholar, researcher, and activist, has gone as far as to claim that W.D. Fard actually met with Judge Rutherford in the 1930s. While this has yet to be proven, it is certain that he read Rutherford’s writings, and that he listened to his speeches on the radio. It is also possible that he attended a speech in person and that he might have met with him at such an event. After all, Rutherford used to lecture to large audiences throughout the United States. Amazingly, as a result of his intellect, appeal, charm, and charisma,  W.D. Fard did in fact befriend many leading scholars, intellectuals, preachers, activists, and religious leaders like Gerald B. Winrod (1900-1957), David N. McInturff (1902-1957), Frank Norris (1877-1952), and Louis Wirth (1897-1952). It is interesting to note that three out of four of these individuals belonged to the same age group and would have been very young when Fard was active. If he was not a socialite, one who passed himself off as a sharifian prince, he could have been taken as a spy. He was constantly changing his colors like a chameleon. Such mimicry and mirroring is a trait of Borderline Personality Disorder.

If Fard loved the quote from Judge Rutherford, and the book Deliverance! from which it was drawn, it was because the white devil testified against himself. This is why “Fard instructed his followers to read the works of Judge Rutherford, the Jehovah’s Witnesses leader.” In fact, “he explicitly encouraged his followers to… listen to…. Rutherford.” Fard may have derived many ideas from Islam, orthodox and heterodox. However, the sources upon which he developed his ideology included many non-Muslim ones, including the Jehovah’s Witnesses. As Bowen elaborates, the teachings shared between the Nation of Islam and the Witnesses, include:

Quote:The 1914 date: a belief in a coming battle of Armageddon; a belief … in the idea that only 144,000 true believers would survive the battle and enter the new civilization on Earth; a belief in the non-immortality of souls; criticism of certain elements of the capitalistic system; and rejecting the legitimacy of all other religions. To this list we might add a few other concepts: Rutherford, for instance, had  tendency to refer to all those who opposed him as “devils:’ the Witnesses had from their early years labeled modern churches as “Babylon” (the NOI sometime used that word for American society); like Fard, the Witnesses’ founder, Charles Taze Russel, showed an interest in knowing the distance from the Earth to the sun; and both groups adhered to the popular premillennial view that the six “days” – in other words, 6,000 years – of oppression had passed and they were now living in the seventh “day.”

As I demonstrated in Finding W.D. Fard, the ideology of the founder of the Nation of Islam featured disparate elements drawn from Christianity, Judaism, the Moorish Science Temple of America, the Ahmadiyya, the Yezidis, Sevener, Twelver, Ghulaṭ, Druze, Babī, and the Bahai. He also appears to have drawn his doctrines from the Black Hebrews, Marcus Garvey, Rastafarianism, Theosophism, Gnosticism, Freemasonry, apocalyptic Baptism, and the Church of Latter-Day Saints. In a History of Conversion to Islam in the United States, Patrick D. Bowen identified many possible sources of of Fard’s doctrines, including Masonic works, and books written by European scholars of religion. The influence of J.F. Rutherford and the Jehovah’s Witnesses on the teachings of W.D. Fard has been detailed by many scholars. As Bowen rightly recognized, “the Witnesses are the most obvious non-Islamic source of his teachings.” The identification of the identity of W.D. Fard’s Bible of Islamism confirms that this is the case.

Conclusions

Mysterious, intriguing, and enigmatic, the idiosyncratic ideology that W.D. Fard preached has left an indelible mark on American Islam and the black American experience. An eclectic ideologue, who drew liberally from sources that suited him from East and West, the founder of the Nation of Islam created an original and unique formulation of the Islamic faith whose intertextuality is becoming increasingly less obscure. For some, the more the origins of his teachings are unraveled, the more Master Fard is exposed as Master Fraud. For others, it manifests the inner working of a mystifying mind, that of an autodidact intellectual. So mesmerizing was the man that thousands of people who came into contact with his person or his teachings came to believe in his divinity sincerely and genuinely. Few in history have had such an impact.

If W.D. Fard was presenting Judge Rutherford’s Deliverance! as The Bible of Islamism, preaching from it, posing with it, drawing from its doctrines, and pretending that it was his Qurʾan, and the holy book of the Nation of Islam, the influence of the Jehovah’s Witnesses appears to have been even greater than previously proposed. Many teachings of W.D. Fard, even their very tone, seem to be echoes of J.F. Rutherford’s Deliverance! with all of its fiery preaching against Satan, Serpents, Beasts, Dragons, and Devils. It even mentions the Isle Patmos and beasts who will be gathered together at Armageddon.

Fard’s blackboard, with the question, “who will win the war of Armageddon?” comes to mind, even though this parlance is not as prominent in later Nation of Islam teachings. Fard was using Rutherford’s writings and teaching aids. He was reading from Deliverance! Fard may also have been delivering the speeches that Rutherford gave on the radio and at free lectures around the nation.

What is more, Rutherford also quotes Hebrews 11: 37-38 in Deliverance! This passage in question speaks of people who “went about in sheepskins and goatskins,” who “wandered in deserts and mountains” and who lived in “caves and holes in the ground” much like Fard’s account of Yakub’s creation, namely, the development of a race of white devils by a mad scientist.

Deliverance! repeatedly specifies that the End of Times started in 1914. It describes the Final Battle and the destruction of the devils. It breaks downs the world population into groups. It also teaches that hell is not a place of eternal suffering. When one reads Deliverance!, particularly chapter twelve on “The World Established” and “The Final Battle,” it is as if we hear Master Fard preaching. A detailed and systematic comparison of the teachings of J.F. Rutherford, the Witnesses, and particularly the work Deliverance! with those of W.D. Fard is certainly in order. However, that should be the focus of future studies.

This groundbreaking discovery, namely, the identification of W.D. Fard’s Bible of Islamism as J.F. Rutherford’s Deliverance!, further reinforces the views of those, like Faheem Shuaibe, a former minister of the Nation of Islam, and a lifelong student of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (1933-2008), who described the movement as “Christianity painted black.” After all, if your scripture is Christian, can you truly be Muslim? Was W.D. Fard a Christian in Islamic garb? Was he some sort of mutant pseudo-Muslim-Jehovah’s Witness who went door to door fishing for souls in Detroit? Was the Nation of Islam a Christian offshoot? Or was it an Islamo-Christian sect of Messianic, theologically extreme, Shiite Muslims that was influenced by the apocalyptic teachings of J.F. Rutherford? It may have been that, in part, but it was far more than that. Hence, these, and many more questions, remain to be answered by the deductive minds of intrepid investigators and academic detectives. The Murky History Of The Aztec Death Whistle, The Screaming Instrument Said To Make The Most Terrifying Sound In The World

While some have theorized that ancient Mesoamericans used the Aztec death whistle to terrify their enemies during battle, experts are still unsure what exactly these skull-shaped instruments were really used for.

In the late 1990s, a group of archaeologists discovered the skeleton of a human sacrifice victim within an ancient temple in Mexico City. Curiously, in each of its hands, the skeleton held a small ceramic whistle molded to look like a human skull. This discovery marked the beginning of a widespread fascination with the so-called “Aztec death whistle.”



In the years since, many have attempted to create knockoff copies of this enigmatic instrument. Content creators have taken to posting to YouTube, demonstrating the “terrifying” sound it purportedly makes. This noise has been likened to the shriek of a banshee, the howling wind, the screams of the damned, or the “wail of a thousand souls.”

These haunting cries have inspired a slew of theories about the whistles’ original purpose. Rumors have circulated online that Aztec warriors blew into these instruments during battle to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. Others have suggested that the whistles may have been used to ward off evil spirits during human sacrifice.

Unfortunately, the truth is that experts don’t know for certain what purpose the whistles might have served — and many of the claims being circulated online seem to be unsubstantiated.



The mystery of the Aztec death whistle began in 1999. Then, a team of archaeologists led by Salvador Guillieum Arroyo were exploring the ruins of an ancient Aztec temple in Tlatelolco, Mexico City dedicated to the wind god Ehecatl.

It was here that they found the remains of the 20-year-old victim of a sacrificial ritual, clutching a pair of skull-shaped whistles.

This was not the first time such whistles had been found. In the 1970s, the historian José Luis Franco published the first analysis of similar whistles found in Mexico. Through his drawings, Franco demonstrated that most of the whistles were fashioned into the shape of either a skull or an owl, a creature associated with death in various Mexican cultures.

But before Arroyo’s 1999 discovery, no other such whistle had been found within its archaeological context.



Arroyo and his team soon realized that the ceramic whistles were meant to depict another Aztec god: Mictlantecuhtli, the god of the underworld and death. Hence, the instruments came to be known commonly as “Aztec death whistles.” They are also known as ehecachichtli, after the wind god Ehecatl.

While it was clear that these whistles had some sort of ceremonial or spiritual purpose, researchers still don’t know what the ancient Aztecs used them for. In fact, experts were not even sure what these instruments might have sounded like when played by an Aztec priest or musician

Then, in the early 2000s, a music archaeologist by the name of Arnd Adje Both received the opportunity to play the whistles.

What Does The Aztec Death Whistle Sound Like?
Arnd Adje Both had long harbored a fascination with the instruments and musical culture of pre-Columbian societies. Given his expertise, he was granted the honor of being the first person to play the Aztec death whistles Arroyo’s team had uncovered in 1999, in the hopes that he might be able to recreate, with some accuracy, their intended sound.

While the sounds produced by knockoff Aztec death whistles in recent YouTube videos are akin to bloodcurdling screams, Both produced a sound that was similar to the wind, but slightly distorted.

His interest piqued, Both then took CT scans of the death whistles to create his own replicas for further study. He later explained what he discovered in an interview with How Stuff Works.



He described the whistles as a type of “air spring” whistle, which were first invented by the Maya around 700 to 800 C.E. Air springs such as these have a rounded chamber on the inside, which creates a distorted sound, as well as an opening on the bottom that can produce various tones depending on how the player cups their hands.

Both noted that air spring whistles “don’t fit into the Western classifications of wind instruments… which means that they’re singular worldwide and only produced in pre-Columbian America.”

To this day, only a few genuine examples of death whistles have ever been found. However, one researcher, Roberto Velázquez Cabrera, has dedicated years of research to the instruments — and provided some historical context regarding their purpose.

Possible Uses For These Mysterious Instruments
Writing for the site Mexicolore in 2011, Roberto Velázquez Cabrera drew a connection between Ehecatl and Mictlantecutli that could explain, to some degree, what the ritual purpose of the death whistles could have been.

Because the 1999 whistles were found in an Aztec temple dedicated to the wind god Ehecatl, and because of the eerie, wind-like sound they purportedly make, Cabrera suggested they may have been used in rituals related to Ehecatl. If a ritual called for wind — or, at the very least, the sound of strong wind — then perhaps the instruments could have been used to evoke the wind because “a strong wind cannot simply be summoned whenever the occasion requires.”

Mictlantecutli and Ehecatl were also strongly intertwined in Aztec belief. One page of the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican document the Codex Gorgia features an illustration of the two gods standing back-to-back at the entrance of the underworld.

What’s more, Lewis Spence’s 1913 work Myths of Mexico and Peru makes a brief mention of a similar whistle. While it is unclear if he is directly referring to the Aztec death whistle, he does draw a connection between the instrument and the sound of wind.

Spence writes of a “most remarkable festival in connection with Tezcatlipoca,” the creator god, during which a “youth was slain who for an entire year previously had been carefully instructed in the role of victim.” The sacrifice was to assume “the name, garb, and attributes of Tezcatlipoca himself” and carry a whistle that made “a noise such as the weird wind of night makes when it hurries through the streets.”



There are also a number of Aztec beliefs relating to the dangers of crossing over into the afterlife. To prepare the deceased for this arduous journey, the whistles may have been used in rituals to ward off evil spirits or give the deceased strength for the trek.

Meanwhile, there is virtually no evidence that Aztec death whistles were used as an intimidation tactic in battles, as many online would suggest.

What The Internet Gets Wrong About Aztec Death Whistles
In recent years, at-home 3D printing technology has become more accessible than ever before, allowing people around the world to share their creations with others at little expense. Because of this technology, imitation versions of the Aztec death whistle have popped up in countless online stores.

Popularized on YouTube, these replicas have been made in all shapes and sizes and even come in Lovecraftian or otherwise horror-themed variants. And unlike the authentic whistles, many of these instruments produce a ghastly, frightening shriek.


With the popularity of Aztec death whistles on the rise, so too is speculation about their history. Many online users have circulated the theory that Aztec warriors blew into these whistles during battle to terrify their enemies. But aside from the fact that the sound the whistles make is terrifying, there seems to be no real evidence to support this.

“There’s no proof, but it’s still a possibility,” Both told How Stuff Works. “Up to this point, we haven’t excavated an individual classified as an Aztec warrior with such an instrument around their neck.”

All that experts really know about these strange, ancient whistles is that they likely had some sort of ritualistic significance. The rest is still a mystery.

In 2002, an elite tactical team was said to have killed the Kandahar Giant, a 13-foot-tall beast with flaming red hair, six fingers on each hand, and two sets of teeth.
In August 2016, a YouTuber posted a lengthy interview with a military contractor identified only as Mr. K. In the interview, Mr. K claimed to have been present during the brutal slaughter of a killer he called the Kandahar Giant.

The killing of the giant, he said, took place during the height of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002 when the military was engaged in fierce battles with the Taliban in their de facto capital in Kandahar Province during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.



But this was no human fighter.

The Kandahar Giant, Mr. K said, was 13 feet tall with fiery red hair, six fingers, and two sets of teeth. It even killed one of the Special Forces soldiers with a spear before the rest of the unit brought it down with 30 seconds of sustained gunfire. And after they radioed it in, the Army took away its corpse and has hidden it ever since.



The Legend Of The Kandahar Giant

In 2002, a group of soldiers went missing while on patrol in a remote mountain region of Kandahar, in the south of Afghanistan. And when they failed to make radio contact for some time, the military sent in a special ops unit to investigate, though the branch of the armed forces they belonged to was never confirmed.



Then, high up in the mountains, the unit came across a cave with scattered Army equipment around but no sign of the missing soldiers. And that’s when they chanced upon the Kandahar Giant.

Though the tale grows with the telling — with some reports suggesting that the humanoid grew as tall as 15 feet — this red-headed giant with six digits, leather moccasins, and smelling like “dead bodies” suddenly emerged from the cave and impaled one of the soldiers with a spear.

And that’s when the soldiers opened fire, ultimately felling the giant with 30 seconds of continuous fire.



“Between them, the squad was armed with full-auto M4 carbines, “recon carbines” (semi-automatic), and M107 Barrett anti-materiel rifles firing .50 BMG,” reads one report. “This much firepower concentrated on one target for one second, let alone thirty, would be extremely destructive.”

After the troops killed the giant, they loaded it onto a Chinook helicopter, which carried it to a transport plane, where no one ever saw it again. The soldiers were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements so the government could keep them all quiet.

But eventually, the soldiers broke their silence because, as one of the men would later say, “the people have a right to know the truth.”



How The Government’s Denial Fueled More Conspiracy Theories

In August 2016, Snopes reached out to the Department of Defense about the “Kandahar Giant incident.” The Department of Defense told the outlet, in no uncertain terms, that they had “no record or information about a special forces member killed by a giant in Kandahar.”



What’s more, there are no press releases on the Department of Defense’s website involving either a “special forces troop” disappearing in Afghanistan or of any incident involving soldiers felling a giant.

Of course, as with any good conspiracy, this lack of evidence isn’t sufficient proof that the myth of the Kandahar Giant doesn’t exist. In fact, Snopes’ debunking of the legend has had quite the opposite effect in certain cryptid spaces, which claim that the government is “trying to hide the truth” from the public.

Around the same time that the Snopes article came out that discredited the story, self-proclaimed supernaturalist L.A. Marzulli told several right-wing websites that the United States government was covering up this “spectacular” story and that those in power had a “vested interest” in keeping the truth of Biblical prophecies from being exposed to the general public.



“People have a right to know about this stuff. If there are fifteen or eighteen footers roaming the Earth and our military has brought them down, we have a right as American citizens to know about it, he said.

“I mean, this isn’t classified military stuff. This is something we need to know. And it points back to the Biblical prophetic narrative.”



The Biblical Origins Behind The Myth Of The Kandahar Giant

“The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Hieronymus Bosch is based on a verse of Genesis that references Nephilim.

The real story of the Kandahar Giant is a lot less interesting than the myth. In 2016, L.A. Marzulli, whose YouTube channel is dedicated to tying current events to Biblical prophecies, brought the story roaring back to life.

In a now-deleted video first posted on August 16, 2016, Marzulli interviewed Mr. K, a man purporting to be a soldier who said he witnessed the “Giant of Kandahar.” Mr. K claimed he saw the giant carrying a spear and murdering a United States soldier named “Dan” before he and the other “special forces” took it down.



According to Marzulli, the creature was a Nephilim, a group of people mentioned in the Genesis and Numbers books of the Old Testament who were said to be “people of unusually large size and strength” that could be found in the Middle East both before and after “The Flood” of Noah’s Ark fame.

But Biblical scholars largely agree that the Nephilim tales were metaphors and not based on the reality of a 13-foot giant living in the desert.

What’s more, the only “Dan” that died in Kandahar around the time of this alleged incident in 2002 was Sgt. 1st Class Daniel A. Romero, who was killed in a bomb blast alongside three other soldiers.



But even with the evidence stacked against it, the myth of the Kandahar Giant is still said to be an “open secret” among soldiers who served in Kandahar in 2002. And several veterans who served in the region have said that from that point on, they were instructed to point their weapons high by aiming for the head “and then a little higher.”

I had never heard of this story until reading this article the first time a while back, but after a good search for more sources on this story o came up completely dry, and so I chalked it up to be nothing. But, after seeing this video I knew I had heard this story before. So here is this video with the same story. I think this might be the interview mentioned in the article.

These four men are described as Rapha (רָפָה), which the ESV translates as “giants” (2 Samuel 21:16, 18, 20, 22; 1 Chronicles 20:6, 8). The description of Rapha is related to the word for Rephaim (רְפָאִ֛ים). This connection is made explicit in the use of the plural Rephaim (רְפָאִ֛ים) in 1 Chronicles 20:4 for Sippai and the use of the singular Rapha (רָפָה) for Saph in 2 Samuel 21:18. (Saph and Sippai are likely variant spellings of the same name.) While 2 Samuel 21:15-22 uses the singular Rapha four times, 1 Chronicles 20:4-8 uses Rapha once and the plural Rephaim twice (1 Chronicles 20:6, 8).

As noted above, Rapha is probably a proper name of a giant from whom Goliath was descended. To make the connections clear, the Anakim were “considered” Rephaim (Deuteronomy 2:11, 21). This makes sense, as Goliath and his relatives are associated with both the Anakim and the Rephaim. They were killed by David and his own “mighty men” (גִּבֹּרִ֖ים, gibborim, contra the “mighty men” of Genesis 6:4) (2 Samuel 23:8).

Another possibility is our Kandahar giant is decencded from this same 6 digit giant from Gath portrayed in the Old Testament.

Yet testing by Moms Across America (MAA), an organization dedicated to educating and empowering others to create healthy communities, found the artificially flavored creme-filled breakfast food also contains measurable levels of aluminum, cadmium, arsenic, lead, glyphosate, and pesticides shown to be harmful to humans.
In a statement to The Epoch Times, MAA director Zen Honeycutt said her organization tested two samples of General Mills’ Trix LOADED cereal because they were alarmed that the company, which had previously seemed very committed to supporting regenerative organic agriculture, launched a cereal “loaded with creme, food dyes, and highly-processed foods.”

In test results obtained by MAA, scientists found residues from eight different pesticides in both samples of Trix LOADED cereal.

The following six pesticide residues were found in trace amounts:

Two pesticides, piperonyl butoxide-1 (PBO) and fluopyram-1, were detected in higher amounts. Fluopyram-1 is a broad-spectrum fungicide that can cause liver problems, endocrine disruption, and thyroid cancer.
Piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is a man-made pesticide synergist that enhances the potency of certain pesticides designed to kill insects. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies PBO as a “possible human carcinogen” as studies in rats show PBO can induce thyroid and liver cancers, as well as noncancerous tumors.
More recent animal model studies suggest PBO exposure can cause neurodevelopmental abnormalities in utero and liver cancer. A 2021 study published in Reproductive Toxicology found PBO may cause male infertility and reproductive toxicity.

A couple of years ago on ATS I started a thread called "The adventure of publishing a book", trying to journalise the different stages of getting my first books from manuscript into print. I've just had another book published (what do you mean, you've never heard of it?), and I'd like to do something similar for the still-new process of trying to get one better known with a bit of publisher support. The first time round, I was giving them regular plugs on my Twitter account with a few campaigns of Promoted Tweets, and I'm sure that was the reason why the titles were getting high placings on Google queries. But the sales figures told me later that Google is not enough.

PPP (as I've been calling it for some time now) came out on the day before Good Friday. In the morning, a big box landed on my doorstep with a couple of dozen copies and some promotional material. Then I was rather alarmed in the afternoon to receive an e-mail from the publishers saying they had prepared a book trailer for me. How many books would this trailer be carrying, when would it arrive at my front door, and where would I store it all? It was something of a relief to click on the link provided and discover they meant the attached video clip.

That was the digital marketing department. I would quite like to hear soon from non-digital marketing. E.g., I need to know what their plans are about review copies. I can send out a few review copies and gift copies of my own, once I've dealt with "friends and family", but I don't want to overlap. And advertising. All I could afford the first time round was classified ads ("The Christian Century" and "The Spectator"), and it doesn't look as though that got me anywhere. Though I've now signed up to be able to campaign on Reddit, where it should be easier to define the target audience. That's in addition to offering book recommendations when I comment on questions.

And what to do with the promotional material? I'm not sure where to send those bookmarks. There are 100 copies of an order form, with a retail price in pounds and euros. I can't send those to bookshops, because they say nothing about discounts. Theology colleges for their students, rural deans (I'm an Anglican) for their clergy, very large churches for their congregations? Anyway, I'm going to advise the publishers to update those forms. They are still couched in terms of ordering books by post and paying by cheque, at a time when cheques in this country are growing obsolete even faster than cash.

And there are ten posters designed to promote "Meet the author" days. I was rather hoping the publishers themselves would be arranging things like that. Or is my agent supposed to do it? I need a literary agent. Where can I get an agent? I was hoping to make contact with one at the London Book Fair last year, but ran into the Catch-22 situation that I should have set up an appointment first. Got to make contact before you can make contact.

Anyway, I've kept the lanyard. Waste not, want not. It won't be the last time I want to walk around a place identifying myself as an author.

I knew this was coming and decided to look for a live feed on YouTube. I missed the actual launch but at 1 minute and 13 seconds after liftoff, when the rocket had already gone supersonic and reached max Q – the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure, I ran outside to snap some pics

Facing west toward California, with a 10’ high block wall around my compound, I couldn’t see low on the horizon but the launch was already visible. I was surprised how high it was already only about a minute and 20 seconds after launching.



It was really moving



I zoomed in for a closer look. You can use the A/C unit and roof vents for reference.

I then ran around to the other side of my house and looking over my gate facing south, I snapped this. According to timestamps, this was about 7minutes after launch.
