Nov 21, 1953: The Natural History Museum, London announces that the "Piltdown Man" skull, initially believed to be one of the most important fossilized hominid skulls ever found, is a hoax.


Stephen Jay Gould (American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science) argued that nationalism and cultural prejudice played a role in the ready acceptance of Piltdown Man as genuine, because it satisfied European expectations that the earliest humans would be found in Eurasia, and the British in particular wanted a "first Briton" to set against fossil hominids found elsewhere in Europe.

Nov 21, 1959: American disc jockey Alan Freed, who had popularized the term "rock and roll" and music of that style, is fired from WABC radio over allegations he had participated in the payola scandal...taking bribes to play requested songs. Due to the negative publicity from the payola scandal, no prestigious station would employ Freed. He hit the bottle hard and died at 43 from from uremia and cirrhosis.

Nov 21, 1961: the La Ronde restaurant in Honolulu opened, designed by John Graham, was the first revolving restaurant in the United States. It was located on the 23rd floor of the Ala Moana Building, adjacent to the Ala Moana Complex shopping center. It had a seating capacity of 162 guests going round 'n round at 1 rotation per hour. Graham received a patent for the revolving design in 1964. Later, the restaurant was renamed "Windows of Hawaii" but closed completely around 1995. The floor was welded in place and converted into office space. Today it's an abandon penthouse.
