It's been my experience over the decades that in any conflict involving communists or communist client states, it is always and invariably the communists or communist client state who are the initiators and aggressors.
This is because, like islamists, the communists are bound and determined to bestow the "blessings" of their chosen mode of slavery on to their victims, by force if necessary. Since most humans do not want to be enslaved, they resist, and force always become necessary to bestow those "blessings" of slavery.
So, in any conflict where either Islamism or Communism is involved, it has never been difficult for me to pick which side is "right" - the aggressor side, whether communist or Islamist, is always, ALWAYS, and invariably the side of the Bad Guys.
The only time in my life when such a decision was even slightly difficult was in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which pitted communism against Islamism. Both sides were "the Bad Guys", so I just had to pick one to aim at, and remain consistent about it. I assessed, at the time, the communists to be the greater threat, because their expansionism was on the rise globally, where the Islamist expansionism of that time was only in a tiny corner of the Middle East, in Israel - which, even then, "Palestine" was seeking to eliminate ad expand into.
Other than that singular situation, it has almost always been one or the other against the world at large, and not a difficult assessment to make.
So, in this situation between Thailand and Cambodia, the Thais HAVE to be the "Good Guy" side, and are the side I have to root for.
Get 'em, boys! Mess those commies up but good, so that they think again before trying to annex territory that is not and has ever been theirs to annex!
