New research suggests that a compound abundant in the Mediterranean diet takes away cancer cells' "superpower" to escape death.

By altering a very specific step in gene regulation, this compound essentially re-educates cancer cells into normal cells that die as scheduled.
One way that cancer cells thrive is by inhibiting a process that would cause them to die on a regular cycle that is subject to strict programming. This study in cells, led by Ohio State University researchers, found that a compound in certain plant-based foods, called apigenin, could stop breast cancer cells from inhibiting their own death.
Much of what is known about the health benefits of nutrients is based on epidemiological studies that show strong positive relationships between eating specific foods and better health outcomes, especially reduced heart disease. But how the actual molecules within these healthful foods work in the body is still a mystery in many cases, and particularly with foods linked to lower risk for cancer.
Parsley, celery and chamomile tea are the most common sources of apigenin, but it is found in many fruits and vegetables.

The researchers also showed in this work that apigenin binds with an estimated 160 proteins in the human body, suggesting that other nutrients linked to health benefits -- called "nutraceuticals" -- might have similar far-reaching effects. In contrast, most pharmaceutical drugs target a single molecule.

"We know we need to eat healthfully, but in most cases we don't know the actual mechanistic reasons for why we need to do that," said Andrea Doseff, associate professor of internal medicine and molecular genetics at Ohio State and a co-lead author of the study. "We see here that the beneficial effect on health is attributed to this dietary nutrient affecting many proteins. In its relationship with a set of specific proteins, apigenin re-establishes the normal profile in cancer cells. We think this can have great value clinically as a potential cancer-prevention strategy."

Doseff oversaw this work with co-lead author Erich Grotewold, professor of molecular genetics and director of Ohio State's Center for Applied Plant Sciences (CAPS). The two collaborate on studying the genomics of apigenin and other flavonoids, a family of plant compounds that are believed to prevent disease.
The research appears this week in the online early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Though finding that apigenin can influence cancer cell behavior was an important outcome of the work, Grotewold and Doseff point to their new biomedical research technique as a transformative contribution to nutraceutical research.

They likened the technique to "fishing" for the human proteins in cells that interact with small molecules available in the diet.

"You can imagine all the potentially affected proteins as tiny fishes in a big bowl. We introduce this molecule to the bowl and effectively lure only the truly affected proteins based on structural characteristics that form an attraction," Doseff said. "We know this is a real partnership because we can see that the proteins and apigenin bind to each other."

Through additional experimentation, the team established that apigenin had relationships with proteins that have three specific functions. Among the most important was a protein called hnRNPA2.
This protein influences the activity of messenger RNA, or mRNA, which contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein. The production of mRNA results from the splicing, or modification, of RNA that occurs as part of gene activation. The nature of the splice ultimately influences which protein instructions the mRNA contains.

Doseff noted that abnormal splicing is the culprit in an estimated 80 percent of all cancers. In cancer cells, two types of splicing occur when only one would take place in a normal cell -- a trick on the cancer cells' part to keep them alive and reproducing.

In this study, the researchers observed that apigenin's connection to the hnRNPA2 protein restored this single-splice characteristic to breast cancer cells, suggesting that when splicing is normal, cells die in a programmed way, or become more sensitive to chemotherapeutic drugs.
"So by applying this nutrient, we can activate that killing machinery. The nutrient eliminated the splicing form that inhibited cell death," said Doseff, also an investigator in Ohio State's Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. "Thus, this suggests that when we eat healthfully, we are actually promoting more normal splice forms inside the cells in our bodies."

The beneficial effects of nutraceuticals are not limited to cancer, as the investigators previously showed that apigenin has anti-inflammatory activities.

The scientists noted that with its multiple cellular targets, apigenin potentially offers a variety of additional benefits that may even occur over time. "The nutrient is targeting many players, and by doing that, you get an overall synergy of the effect," Grotewold explained.

Doseff is leading a study in mice, testing whether food modified to contain proper doses of this nutrient can change splicing forms in the animals' cells and produce an anti-cancer effect.

Five years ago, a small group of cancer scientists meeting at a restaurant in a deconsecrated church hospital in Mainz, Germany, drew up an audacious plan: They would test their novel cancer vaccine against one of the most virulent forms of the disease, a cancer notorious for roaring back even in patients whose tumors had been removed.
The vaccine might not stop those relapses, some of the scientists figured. But patients were desperate. And the speed with which the disease, pancreatic cancer, often recurred could work to the scientists’ advantage: For better or worse, they would find out soon whether the vaccine helped.



On Wednesday, the scientists reported results that defied the long odds. The vaccine provoked an immune response in half of the patients treated, and those people showed no relapse of their cancer during the course of the study, a finding that outside experts described as extremely promising.



The study, published in Nature, was a landmark in the yearslong movement to make cancer vaccines tailored to the tumors of individual patients.



Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, led by Dr. Vinod Balachandran, extracted patients’ tumors and shipped samples of them to Germany. There, scientists at BioNTech, the company that made a highly successful COVID vaccine with Pfizer, analyzed the genetic makeup of certain proteins on the surface of the cancer cells.



Using that genetic data, BioNTech scientists then produced personalized vaccines designed to teach each patient’s immune system to attack the tumors. Like BioNTech’s COVID shots, the cancer vaccines relied on messenger RNA. In this case, the vaccines instructed patients’ cells to make some of the same proteins found on their excised tumors, potentially provoking an immune response that would come in handy against actual cancer cells.



“This is the first demonstrable success — and I will call it a success, despite the preliminary nature of the study — of an mRNA vaccine in pancreatic cancer,” said Dr. Anirban Maitra, a specialist in the disease at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, who was not involved in the study. “By that standard, it’s a milestone.”



The study was small: Only 16 patients, all of them white, were given the vaccine, part of a treatment regimen that also included chemotherapy and a drug intended to keep tumors from evading people’s immune responses. And the study could not entirely rule out factors other than the vaccine having contributed to better outcomes in some patients.



“It’s relatively early days,” said Dr. Patrick Ott of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.



Beyond that, “cost is a major barrier for these types of vaccines to be more broadly utilized,” said Dr. Neeha Zaidi, a pancreatic cancer specialist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. That could potentially create disparities in access.



But the simple fact that scientists could create, quality-check and deliver personalized cancer vaccines so quickly — patients began receiving the vaccines intravenously roughly nine weeks after having their tumors removed — was a promising sign, experts said.



Since the beginning of the study, in December 2019, BioNTech has shortened the process to under six weeks, said Dr. Ugur Sahin, a co-founder of the company, who worked on the study. Eventually, the company intends to be able to make cancer vaccines in four weeks.



In patients who did not appear to respond to the vaccine, the cancer tended to return around 13 months after surgery. Patients who did respond, though, showed no signs of relapse during the roughly 18 months they were tracked.



Intriguingly, one patient showed evidence of a vaccine-activated immune response in the liver after an unusual growth developed there. The growth later disappeared in imaging tests.


“It’s anecdotal, but it’s nice confirmatory data that the vaccine can get into these other tumor regions,” said Dr. Nina Bhardwaj, who studies cancer vaccines at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Scientists have struggled for decades to create cancer vaccines, in part because they trained the immune system on proteins found on tumors and normal cells alike.


Tailoring vaccines to mutated proteins found only on cancer cells, though, potentially helped provoke stronger immune responses and opened new avenues for treating any cancer patient, said Ira Mellman, vice president of cancer immunology at Genentech, which developed the pancreatic cancer vaccine with BioNTech.

“Just establishing the proof of concept that vaccines in cancer can actually do something after, I don’t know, 30 years of failure is probably not a bad thing,” Mellman said. “We’ll start with that.”

In a collapse, not all looters are created equally. There will be varying degrees of how far a person is willing to go to survive. But even the best, most honest of people will be desperate for food and water. It’s a good idea to consider who might be approaching your doorstep before trouble shows.

Stan, the Family Man: He has loved ones that he desperately wants to protect. He ignored the hassle of preparedness. He even ignored FEMA’s suggestion of storing three days worth of emergency food and water. Money has been tight once his hours were cut since the economic slow-down. He’d thought about selling the jet skis and investing in storage food, but it was just too depressing. Now a wide-spread emergency has decimated grocer’s shelves in a matter of hours. Water is scarce and there are rumors of many in the area getting sick after drinking non-purified water from a nearby lake. The toilet won’t flush, sewage has backed up in the tub and there is no electric. Communications are down and he and his family are without hope. The first two days, he’d held out hope that help would arrive. But it hasn’t and his family is hungry and thirsty and frightened. Stan has always paid his dues, and would normally never think about stealing from others. But, that was then. He must do whatever it takes to provide for his family. Toni, the Prisoner: When the lights went out, security at the prison was compromised. Most of the jail guards left for home at first sign of trouble. Now, the tables are turned and Toni and several other inmates have escaped. Toni and his group are on foot, but that doesn’t present a problem because their rural location offers plenty of opportunities. The farmers in the area have fruits and vegetables ripe for the picking. Several in the vicinity raise horses. Now that he and the other inmates broke out of prison, Toni considers himself lucky; the problem of food and transportation is solved…once he and the five other inmates have overtaken the family they’ve targeted.

Scorpion, the Gang Member: Scorpion, a member of a major gang is, mad at life and knows he’s entitled to survive because he’s young and strong. He’s willing to do whatever it takes without remorse. He and his homeboys have plenty of firepower and ammunition: the tools of their trade. They can’t wait to take what they need, just for the sheer sport of it. And it’s proven to be as easy as stealing candy from a baby. Several home invasions produced more than enough food, water and medical supplies. What didn’t interest them was grabbed and sold on the black market to desperate customers. The best part is they didn’t even have to leave the city. There’s more than enough to keep the gang well fed. Along the way, they’ve picked up an arsenal. Ammo is now so plentiful, it’s moved past need and has been sold for more than what gold and silver is fetching. The few police combating the looting and killing don’t have the manpower to take down his gang, and they’re on a rampage.

John, the Tactically Trained: For the past two days, John has had to watch his neighbors go into meltdown. They’re without food and water, as is John. One of his neighbors is a diabetic with no way to get insulin. They can’t call their doctor—cell and land line phones haven’t worked for days. Plus, the roads are in complete gridlock. The gas stations ran out of fuel within 24-hours of the crisis and many frantic motorists trying to flee ran out of gas, or experienced car problems, leaving their vehicles to clog the roadways.

John feels for his neighbor, but he has loved ones. They are his number one priority and he’s run out of time. John and several of his hunting buddies have decided it’s time to search for survival goods, taking their ATV’s. John’s military training now comes in handy. As leader of the group, he knows to head outside the suburb he lives for the boonies where it’s more likely there will be plentiful food and water and preparedness goods. They’ve agreed not to hurt anyone, so long as they’re allowed to take what they need. John knows what to look for: the sound of a generator or lights shining through windows. This is his signal a homeowner is prepared. During the day his group listens for the tell-tale sounds of a generator, a chainsaw, or a motorized vehicle, which isn’t hard to do now that the grid’s down. For days, things have been eerily silent. At night, John and his hunting buddies look for the tell-tale glow of lights reflecting from windows. In no time, they have what they need and will return to this rural goldmine on an as-need basis.

Brenda, the Naysayer: Brenda laughed when her co-worker, Sarah, shared her prepping plans. Now, the streets are over-run with desperate folks. The stores have been looted. Grocers, sporting good stores and gun shops were the first to get hit. But there have been plenty of TV’s, computers and high-ticket electronic items pilfered, even though they’re no good to anyone at present. The family car has an empty gas tank, but she’s in good health and so is the rest of her family. It’s just blind luck Brenda knows where Sarah lives, and the awesome part is she isn’t far—only a couple of miles away. Her family is into bicycling, so the problem of transportation is solved; They’ll just zip past the gridlock, baring looters, that is. The rest of Brenda’s plan lies with the knowledge that Sarah is kindhearted.

She’ll put Brenda and her family up until order is restored, which from the looks of things could be a long time. Brenda and her husband throw what little they have in their pantry (what they can handle weight-wise, anyway) into backpacks and pillowcases. Next, they clear out the medicine cabinet. They tried to use their ATM card for cash just yesterday, so they wouldn’t show up empty-handed—they’d never want to be seen as free-loaders—but the grid is hopelessly crashed, so no luck there, and all businesses are closed, including the banks. But Brenda doesn’t necessarily see that as a deal-breaker. She did everything she could, other than fill her pantry and get preparedness goods. And besides, Brenda has two adorable kids…how can Sarah say no?

Will You Be A Victim?

Desperate families, prison inmates, gang-bangers and freeloaders will be out there during a full-on collapse. The first thing you want to do is to get prepared so that you aren’t one of them. Next, how you handle desperate people and whether you come out on the other side alive has a lot to do with planning beforehand. Here are some pointers. Hopefully, you have some of your own to share by commenting below:


The “Vacant Home” strategy: Many people plan on making their home look unoccupied in an attempt to protect themselves from looters. In grid down, you don’t necessarily want to have your home appear vacant. The average person won’t risk getting shot when they believe a home is occupied. It’s better to keep them guessing, and that also includes NOT telegraphing your preparedness.


You will be an instant target if you’re running a noisy a generator, or driving a vehicle, or using a chain saw when your area has drawn looters or worse. It sends a message: You’re prepared and you have goods they need! It’s best to forgo the obvious. Some generators are built to run quietly. Is yours? If not, when looters are in your area, use only tools that won’t draw as much attention like a tree-felling ax, and cease running a noisy generator until it’s safer to do so. Keep vehicles parked, and gas storage out of site. Some things that you can do are to add supplementary mufflers to your generator, build a sound dampening enclosure, build an underground sound dampening enclosure, and only run your generator during the noisiest parts of the day, if possible.



Don’t light up your home in grid-down! Now is a good time to fit your windows with black-out curtains. Even using a piece of material that’s secured—possibly with duct tape, so light doesn’t escape and alert people outside, will do. Whatever you do, test, test, and test again. Test your black-out provisions now when there is plenty of ambient light and test them again if the grid goes down on moonless nights.



Cooking odors will attract anyone with a growling stomach, including neighbors, looters and worse. Keep canned goods and MRE’s on hand for times when looting is rampant.



You must have the means to defend yourself. Guns and ammo may be the pivotal deciding factor between who comes out ahead: Toni the prisoner or Scorpion the gang banger, or you and your loved ones. It will be necessary in times of unruliness, when people are frantic to survive, to patrol your home, whether it happens to be in the boonies or in the city. This, often times, requires a trusted group. It may become impossible to protect a location with just a husband and wife due to the heightened demands on your time that during normal times is not an issue. This is a separate post, however, because of all it entails. Look for the post soon!



Either have stored water or a safe route to get it and keep a high-quality water purifier on hand. During a collapse, sanitation will go south. Never risk drinking non-purified water. (David’s Note: I plan on purifying any water that I have stored rather than relying on my container cleaning and water preserving skills to keep us safe.)

Put aside medical supplies. Should anyone in your family or group be inured, medical aid is unlikely to show during a crisis. We’ll talk about what you’ll need specifically in an upcoming post.



Keep several ABC fire extinguishers that will handle all types of fires. Do not expect to be able to contact the fire department for help. (David’s note: We also keep a LARGE supply of baking soda, aloe, and other first aid items for burns. One of these items is anbesol…which is for teeth, but contains .9% lidocaine. NEVER depend upon land line and cell phones to work when a crisis strikes. If you doubt this, you only have to look at the Japan tsunami, or Haiti, or Katrina. Have a back-up plan, always—which we’ll be covering here in an upcoming post. (David’s note: Never underestimate the power of randomness in a large scale disaster. On 9/11 in NYC, the network that Blackberries operated on was the only one that was reliable. After Katrina, friends doing security contracting weren’t able to use cell phones, but were able to use landline phones even though the water was 6 feet deep on the ground floor and the cables were under water. In Hawaii, the night that the earthquake hit Japan and a tsunami was expected to hit Hawaii, cell phone circuits were busy, but I was still able to email, tweet, post updates, and surf the web over my data connection on the same phone that couldn’t make a call.)



When possible, a large dog is worth considering. It’s long been known by police that a large, serious-sounding dog will stop the bad guy. Problem is, he’ll just look for easier targets. You must provide for their survival, just as you have your loved ones, which will mean plenty of dog food. Just having a beat-up, large dog collar, worn water and food bowls, and a heavy duty chain trailing on the ground WILL have the bad guy thinking twice about attacking your home. After reading this section, a wise-cracking Alaskan friend suggested a chewed up moose leg.



Divide and avoid being conquered. Split up your survival goods in as many ways as are practical for you. Some people will have more options than others, depending on their living situation and how willing they are to hide things in places that many would consider to be completely crazy. Splitting up and hiding your survival goods will allow you to sacrifice stashes if necessary without giving up everything.

Most of us, if given the opportunity, would choose to help others, and many preppers who can afford to have put aside extra canned goods to help others. But there is a world of difference between helping someone in need and becoming a victim of someone who plans to steal your preparedness goods with force. It’s important to agree amongst family or group members how you will address likely scenarios, so if the time comes, you’ll be able to react as a cohesive group. Hesitation can kill you!

Things to think about as there are people who have thought it through (at least target wise), on who or what type of person they plan to target.

Hopefully this will be informative. None of this quoted stuff below is my material, just the choice comments from a couple of threads on the survival boards that kind of summarizes multi-page threads.

The biggest surprise is how many people talk about Mormons. If any of you are Mormons, I would be very careful on who knew it and try to get your address removed from church records because these jerks already have the idea of going to your church and retrieving addresses to find you. There is lots of talk about Mormons being the #1 target in a SHTF situation.

When Do YOU Become The bad guy?

On this very site shortly after I signed up there was a poll where about a third of the respondents claimed they would be a raider NOW. The way my mental math works, the two thirds who think they're all moral and ethical now...probably had a full tummy and most really do not have all their things in order....NOW.


Which leads me to believe on this site the real numbers are over half the people being raiders and as far as the rest of the totally not prepared world, I'd say the real numbers of raiders to non would be....the majority.



The sad truth is that everyone here and everyone that reads this will become the "bad guy" when they or their wife and kids are starving. Those of you that believe your morals are too high to plunder, steal and yes, even kill for food when you have none are only kidding yourselves. Oh, I would never do that.....BS!



MORMONS:



(appear to be the biggest target to these survival board members) Members of the LDS Church are supposed to have a year's worth of food stored up and too many people think being religious means being unarmed. Would-be raiders might think to start out by raiding a Temple, getting member records, and then paying visits, if they don't already know which of their neighbors are Mormons.



(On another board, I read a post about how a secret prepper was chatting with his neighbor about hard times and possible disasters, and the neighbor came out and said "Hey, I'm not worried. X down the street is a Mormon. If anything goes wrong, I'll just take my gun and take what he's got". The prepper - once he got over the shock - suggested that might not be a good idea as X was also a gun nut, which kind of took the neighbor back. The prepper later put the neighbor on his list of people to look out for in a crisis, and also had a chat with X about the folks on the street where they lived...)

FARMING:



Farmers - Another possibility is they intend to drive out and raid farms and ranches, convinced that such places must be full of food. Don't know what they think they'll do with a silo full of grain, or a bunch of cows or hogs; especially since I doubt any of them know squat about butchering or meat preservation. Food preparation, either. Raider wanna-bes seldom impress me with their smarts or foresight. Which is probably why they're raider wanna-bes.



Plant a garden......another joke in the short term before most have died off. How long does it take most crops to mature.....90 days? Let's say you grow tomatoes or whatever and there are millions of people who haven't done any prepping and they are starving, what happens? Right, they raid your garden, maybe by the hundreds. Bottom line, unless you are going to shoot everyone, those hoards of starving people are going to take your garden by storm.



And, you raise livestock? OK, how long you think Bessie the cow is going to last when people are starving? You won't have a chicken left.



This is what I'm talking about, but you see, the country is only the country because all the city slickers are in the city. Where do you think they are gonna come when the city isn't a resource anymore? Where do you think they are coming where food is running in the woods?



HUNTING:



All of a sudden everyone becomes a great hunter is just another Fantasy! Unless some calamity strikes, that knocks down almost every human, hunting for food after TEOTWAWKI is a recipe for starvation. I get a large percentage of my meat supply from hunting and fishing. During a good year, I fill my freezers early, and everyone else that hunts nearby has worse luck... if they get lucky, I don't. This last year, floods pushed out all the deer, and people miles away harvested them.



Whitetails were exterminated in my part of E Texas (whole region) during the Great Depression. They were missing until the mid-50's when the State had meetings and made agreements with people to not kill them for so many years, till they reached stable populations. My father told a story about during the later years of WWII someone saw a deer track... the community got together, put dogs on the trail, and two days later ran the deer down... they killed it and ate it right there... and another decade passed before the State restocked em.



All large game will disappear in weeks. Without rules and regulations (and wardens to enforce the rules), starving people will spotlight em, and kill every single animal they see.

At the end of 'legal season', deer are mighty scarce... and that's with recreational non-starving hunters.



I think you're missing my point. When the white tails go, the guys that hunted them don't stop...they keep going. We will be an overpopulated, well armed species that animals are not adapted to defend against. We will kill them faster than they can reproduce, we almost do it on accident now as it is.



There will NOT be enough wild game to be hunted for any extended period of time, unless a large populations of humans are apart of the crisis.



But, maybe you can fish and hunt for food? You and a million others. And I can just see you and a multitude of others lined up at the river/lake and when you finally catch a big ole catfish, you will be mobbed. You'll have to shoot your way out.



I was speaking to Urban Preppers as well. Which half of the city slickers do you think is going to be scarier, the half that died, or the resilient half that figured out how to survive in a place with no wild game; i.e. well armed, large numbered group of possibly trained people who are coming to where the food is. And if you live in Texas, which is mostly privately owned...they are going to be coming to your private property.


Don't count on hunting, you may end up as dinner -



Law Enforcement / Military


I think during the beginning of a crisis if police are struggling with food or fuel they'll requisition whatever they want or need under the name of national security or some other. Just driving down the road you'll be a target for a stop and seizure of your property/fuel. Of course all that can be mitigated by prepping and not having to go out during the onset of a disaster. Officials appropriating supplies sent for aid, or siphoning it to only those useful to them. Or going door to door to "requisition" your stuff.... for themselves by their "Authority".

Everyone knows the story (stories) and countless TV shows/movies, but if you just woke up... In the late 1960s, a serial murderer who called himself the Zodiac Killer terrorized Northern California. In under a year, from December 1968 to October 1969, he killed at least five people. He then sent cryptic letters to local newspapers, some of which included ciphers. But who was the Zodiac Killer and why hasn’t a suspect ever been charged in this case?

To date, no one has ever definitively confirmed the Zodiac Killer’s identity. But a number of suspects have been floated in the years since the infamous elusive criminal sent his last batch of letters in the 1970s. Sons have accused their fathers, amateur investigators have suggested new people of interest, and the police have continued to investigate the horrific crimes.

From cold case detectives, PI's to teams made up of former cops, military intelligence officers, and journalists have investigated the case over decades to no avail. Maybe, it was a military MKultra psywar operation, which in that case we'll never know. CIA director Richard Helms took the secrets to his grave (supposedly he shredded).

So, like clockwork the mystery has popped up once again in mainstream headlines.

A volunteer cold case team says an FBI official confirmed the man they believe to be the "Zodiac Killer" is currently listed as a suspect and accuses government agencies across the country of not properly investigating the alleged serial killings.

Thomas Colbert, an investigative journalist and leader of the non-profit volunteer team Case Breakers, said in a press release this week that a whistleblower on his team was told by an FBI agent that Gary Francis Poste, an Air Force veteran, is considered a suspect in a database for the killings and that the lab has a "partial" DNA sample.

"The felon has been secretly listed as the Zodiac ‘suspect’ in Headquarters’ computers since 2016," the group wrote in a press release. "With his ‘partial DNA’ safely secured at the feds’ Quantico, Virginia lab."

The FBI has consistently rejected reports and conclusions that the case has been solved and told Fox News Digital in October 2021 that the case was still open.

That same month, the Case Breakers announced they identified Poste, who passed away in 2018, as the Zodiac Killer believed responsible for at least five murders that occurred in 1968 and 1969 in the San Francisco area. Unlike most serial killers, the Zodiac Killer taunted authorities with complex ciphers in letters sent to newspapers and law enforcement. The slayings have spawned books, movies and documentaries in the years since, and amateur and professional sleuths have pored over the case in an effort to unmask the killer.

Today, Case Breakers believe they have tied Poste to each of the murders, and the team hopes that law enforcement agencies will compare the DNA they found on a hiking mat and confirmed belong to Poste to DNA from the crime scenes including mystery hair found on Cheri Jo Bates, a sixth victim in Riverside, California, that they believe the Zodiac Killer victimized in 1966 based on a 1975 FBI memo.

"We 100% believe our Cheri Jo Bates case is not affiliated with the Zodiac case," Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback told Fox News Digital in October 2021. "Nothing has changed on that."

In a Wednesday press release, Case Breakers said law enforcement agencies at all levels have ignored state law, ignored evidence, mishandled DNA, and succumbed to "apathy" "egos" and fear of "humiliation." 

"Like cops, federal agents are dealing with huge caseloads, constant training, odd rules and bureaucracy. But when someone wearing a badge or uniform works with others to avoid or hide materials, sidestep difficult procedures, or lie about evidence, they're hurting our volunteers and the thousands of families waiting for answers,"  the Case Breakers whistleblower said in a statement. "That includes the ten siblings left in the Zodiac victim families. Sadly, the team has documented over two dozen examples of law enforcement unprofessionalism in the field."

COVER-UP’S LAUNCH: In 2014, neighbors and supporters in the High Sierra town of Groveland gave up the goods on 77-year-old Poste. “Jaw-dropped” FBI agents in Watsonville were shown his elaborate escape map, photos, dual identities, cryptic clues (right), shell casings – and in 2016, his DNA.

But witnesses and emails reveal the feds, Riverside PD and SFPD whitewashed the residents’ heroics and seized their briefcase with all of the critical documentation.

Fortunately, these actions were chronicled by the award-winning TV investigator and author Dale Julin (left) – currently finishing the historic Zodiac manuscript. When the newsman and Groveland locals engaged the CBs in 2020, they all merged efforts. Later, friendly cops from other agencies reported that Riverside’s murder-scene DNA, along with Poste’s coded profile, were in fact never uploaded on the FBI’s CODIS crime database. The dead suspect’s missing sample was particularly disturbing, considering Julin had arranged for all three departments to have access to it. Ignoring or evading this crime-comparison tool is a violation of a 2016 California law.

The 40 volunteers, now in their 12th year, are curious: How many other American families have had their loved one’s case go unsolved because law enforcement failed to use CODIS to enter (1) the DNA from a crime scene or (2) the DNA profile from a person arrested for a felony? When this investigation is completed, the CBs hope the troubling actions by these three agencies will come up for official review.

Forensic DNA cases in the USA have been backlogged for decades. The CB who cordially approached Riverside Police, ballistics expert Stephanie C. Luehr (left), and CEO Colbert agree on the solution: After a realistic period of time, new laws should allow families to access their victim’s case file. And like the minutemen of old, colleges, accredited private labs, chain-of-custody cold case teams and skilled crowd-sourcing groups are all eager to contribute.

boys and was an integral part of development in finding one's niche with one's peers. Trading items can bring certain
skills and confidences to a growing person that are not solely the abilities of the well-off.

Bella In The Wych Elm.

Hagley Hall, a large manor house and home of the Lyttelton family on the outskirts of Birmingham, England went through
what many aristocratic domains in the country went through in the seventies and fell into some disrepair. But in the evening
of 18th April 1943, the condition of the grandee building wasn't on the minds of the four boys sneaking about the surrounding
woodland in search of bird's nests.

Robert Hart, Fred Payne, Tom Willetts and Bob Farmer were were trespassing and they knew it. Lord Cobham --a Lyttelton
and the owner of the estate after inheriting the place from his father, wasn't a fan of having the commoners on his property
and hence the need for caution. The 11th Viscount Cobham had employed a Gamekeeper and having one's ass peppered
with buckshot wasn't something easy to explain to one's parents back in '43.

Some researchers suggested the quartet of lads were looking for rabbits and eggs to supplement their families’ meagre meat
ration due to the nightly German Luftwaffe’s bombing raids over Birmingham. However, I suspect this is to placate a reader's
judgement on the boys' infringement on private property and establish them as mere innocent chess-pieces in this mystery.

After a while, Bob Farmer noticed a Wych Elm, a type of tree that usually can reach the height of thirty feet. The one Farmer
was deliberating on for having a nest in its explosion of branches was covered in galls and stunted through Dutch Elm disease.
Still, if the elm was so badly damaged, there was a good chance a Tawny Owl or another type of feathered predator had
taken up residence in the hollow centre of the timber once used in the construction of coffins.

Up Bob went and sliding himself through the stiff curtain of sticks, he peered down into the rotted hole in the Wych Elm.
Due to the fading daylight, he first thought it was the blanched remains of a small animal that gotten stuck in the tree and
then leaning closer, he grasped the full horror of what he was seeing, it was a skull of a human. Eyeing the clumps of hair
clinging to the staring cranium, he glanced down at crooked teeth smiling up at the boy who'd found it. After relaying
his grisly find to his companions, the four youngsters agreed to never to tell a soul about what was entombed in the
blight-stricken Wych Elm for fear of getting into trouble.

We've all seen the movie 'Stand By Me' and some of us may all recall from our youth just how shallow a vow or secret
impacts on our position in a group. So it was 17-year-old Tom Willetts who informed his parents of their discovery when
he arrived home from that evening's egg foray. Mr Willetts -not one for feeling the excitement of cloak-and-dagger,
promptly contacted the Police and our wood-skulking search-party of youths fall away from the story.

The Bobbies of the village where the drummer of Led Zeppelin would reside years later, quickly sprang into action and
cordoned off the area. The morning light brought more information as the Police investigators found it was a female's
skull encased in the rotten tree and the rest of the skeleton was scattered close by. The skull was examined and a piece
of taffeta fabric was found stuffed inside the mouth, further foraging around the area discovered an imitation-gold ring
and a pair of crepe-soled shoes.

Professor James Webster was the medical examiner on the scene and announced the victim had been suffocated. After
some more examination, he concluded that the woman was around 35 years old, had irregular teeth in her upper jaw, had
light brown hair, and was just 5 feet (1.52 meters) tall. He also determined that the woman had given birth to one child in
her lifetime and estimated that she had been dead for around 18 months.

Adding further, Professor Webster estimated the time of death for the woman was around October of 1941, almost two
years before the discovery. He later stated: “I cannot imagine a woman accidentally slipping in there, neither do I think
it reasonable for a woman to crawl into that place to commit suicide.”

He also concluded that the woman had been placed inside the hollow trunk before rigor mortis had set in, otherwise the
body would have been too stiff to fit inside the narrow tree trunk. Taking in the full facts of from what he and the Police
had gathered, Webster rationalised that the victim would most likely have been killed close to the spot where she was
found otherwise the killer would not have been able to transport her body to the tree before rigor mortis set in. Finishing
his initial investigation, Professor Webster added: “It was an excellent place for the concealment of a murder and I think
it indicates local knowledge".

By now the Worcestershire County police were involved and so their first task -generated from what physical evidence
they had, was to contact every dentist in the area in the hope that one of them would recognise the deceased woman’s
distinctive protruding teeth. Missing persons reports matching the description of the victim were trawled through and
the manufacture of the crepe-soled shoes was researched. The Waterfoot Company of Lancashire produced the footwear
and the investigators were able to find the owners of all but six pairs, which had been sold from a market stall in Dudley,
a small town in the vicinity of 7 miles (11 km) from Birmingham.

Weeks passed and as World War II took its toll on the British people, the trail to find out who the tree-entombed woman
lost energy. The 'Tree Murder Riddle' became a cold file on the desk of those more focused with those dead and injured
among the rubble of a bombed-out city. Then as Christmas of 1943 rolled around, mysterious graffiti appeared on a wall
in the village of Old Hill, a couple of miles from where the dead woman's shoes were purchased.

Scrawled in chalk on the side of a house, it read: “Who put Luebella down the wych elm?” This was the first time that a
name had been used to suggest to the deceased woman's name. As 1944 arrived, similar messages appeared, all written
by the same hand and increasingly taking on the same word form: “Who put Bella in the wych elm?”.

Just as Banksy today, those of the establishment sought the artist of the intriguing defacement, but appeals by Police to
find out who was sending the message that they knew the name of the woman proved unsuccessful. As the soul-weary
effects of the war receded, England began to turn from the bloodshed across the Channel and ponder possible theories
on what had brought about the strange funeral of the mystery woman some call Bella.

Anthropologist Professor Margaret Murray proposed the fact that the deceased’s hand was severed from her arm, she may
have been a victim of a black magic ritual. An occult ceremony known as the 'Hand of Glory', requires its followers to use
an amputated hand in a particular sacrament and this act will give the holder of the appendage to have the power to unlock
any door the carrier encountered.

Professor Murray also believed the woman's murder was somehow connected to another act of foul play in the nearby
village of Lower Quinton. For reasons unknown, the Anthropologist formulated that Bella's demise in 1941 in Hagley Woods
was linked to the murder of a casual farmworker Charles Walton, who was found stabbed and found firmly secured to the
ground with his own pitchfork in the evening of 14th February 1945.

Since Hagley Woods had been attached via folklore to witchcraft. Professor Murray made the loose connection that the use
of Belladonna -Deadly Nightshade, was often involved with occult rituals and the curt name 'Bella' had been daubed on a
wall, evil necromancy was going on in the outskirts of Birmingham.

If we ignore the disciplines of the Hand of Glory requires the severed extremity from a hanged person and one of items
used to kill Walton was a tool often used by farm labourers, the only connection is the man who performed both autopsies
on the victims separated by two years. That was Professor James Webster.


However, this 'Witchy' theory was grabbed by the public and even today, it's a prominent belief. But cloaked po-faced
mumblers with evil on their minds stumbling through the rain-soaked greenery of a nobleman's land isn't for everybody
and so the backdrop of the war would make a fine platform to explain Bella's unusual demise.

Occasionally used for propaganda purposes and sometimes in real-life, German spies were captured in the UK during
World War II. Therefore, eight years after when Dwight D. Eisenhower was being sworn in as the 34th President of the
United States, the theory that the woman found in the Wych Elm was involved in espionage was inevitable.

In 1953, The Wolverhampton Express and Star newspaper received a letter from someone who identified herself only as
Anna of Claverley. This mysterious person agreed to expand the accusations that Bella was a spy by meeting  journalist
Wilfred Byford-Jones and being interviewed. 'Anna' was later identified as Una Mossop, who claimed the dead woman of
Hagley Wood was a member of a German spy ring searching for local munitions factories that could then be targeted by
the Luftwaffe.

Una went on and described how her husband Jack Mossop -a RAF pilot, had become involved in a spy-ring along with a
Dutchman called Van Ralt. Mrs Mossop stated that it was Van Ralt who had picked up Bella in his car and later strangled
the woman because of her intelligence associations.

A simpler reworking of this offbeat tale was that Jack Mossop and his Dutch friend had been downing drinks in a local
pub with an unnamed woman and when she passed out due to drunkeness, the two men stuffed her in a tree to teach
her a lesson. Waking from her booze-snooze, she was unable to escape her timbered prison and died.

The media enjoyed the public's intrigue around the mystery and reported that Jack Mossop died in a Staffordshire hospital
before the bones were found in the Wych Elm allegedly due to a mental breakdown over the accidental murder. Van Ralt
was never found and Una Mossop's testimony was seen to be nothing more than hearsay.

But like most tales on the internet, it needed some grown-up spice to flavour a mystery. Year later, declassified MI5 files
offered some weight to the spy notion. Disclosed information from the agency showed a German spy named Josef Jakobs
was captured after breaking his ankle while parachuting into Cambridgeshire in 1941, the same year Professor Webster
suggested Bella died.

Further research showed that after Jakobs’ arrest, a creased photograph was found in his pocket of a glamorous German
actress and cabaret singer called Clara Bauerle. Jakobs told his interrogators that the woman was his lover and that the
Third Reich had recruited her as a spy. Supposedly, Bauerle had parachuted into the West Midlands in 1941 and disappeared.

It makes a helluva an explanation except for a couple of things. Clara Bauerle was around 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 meters)
and the body from Hagley Wood was only 5 feet (1.52 meters) in height. Also, in 2016 it was discovered that Clara Bauerle
had died in a Berlin hospital in December 1942.

Other theories have been tossed onto the table of who Bella was, a barmaid murdered by an American GI or Gypsies camping
in Hagley Wood killing one of their own. But the mystery is still ongoing and now in 2023, Bella in the Wych Elm is still holding
her secret.

A 'Disorientation Device' From Hell Will Prepare NASA Astronauts for Spaceflight Vertigo

The torturous ride is meant to help scientists come up with ways to reduce symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and vertigo once astronauts exit their spacecraft.
